Chapter 14 - The People Behind the EmpireMy Father Had Been Running From Something Bigger Than Money

We found the warehouse before dawn.
It stood near the river.
No sign.
No windows.
Two guards outside.
Victor met us in the alley.
Claire held Hope's empty blanket in her hands.
"Where is she?"
Victor pointed toward the building.
"They want the ledger."
"Then we give it to them."
"No."
Lydia stepped forward.
"They don't want the ledger."
"What do they want?"
"You."
I looked at her.
"Why me?"
"Because your bloodline completes the trust."
I didn't understand.
Victor explained.
"Your father didn't build an empire."
"He built a firewall."
"What?"
"The network wasn't designed to make money."
"Then what?"
"To hide people."
"From whom?"
Victor looked toward the warehouse.
"International criminals."
"Politicians."
"Traffickers."
"Governments."
"Your father used dirty money to fund safe routes, informants, witnesses."
I stared.
"So he wasn't a criminal."
"He was both."
Victor's voice was bitter.
"He did terrible things to stop worse men."
I looked at Lydia.
"And you?"
"I wanted the money."
At least she admitted it.
Victor continued.
"The organization fractured after Adrian died."
"Who took over?"
"Three families."
"Names."
He gave them.
None meant anything to me.
Then he said,
"But there's one leader above them."
"Who?"
Victor looked at Claire.
She shook her head.
"No."
"Tell him."
Claire closed her eyes.
"His name is Julian Cross."
I had heard it once.
From my father.
As a child.
A story about a man who could find anyone.
A man who never appeared in photographs.
A man my father called the Ghost.
We entered the warehouse.
Lights flickered on.
Dozens of people stood around us.
Then a man stepped from the shadows.
Gray suit.
White shirt.
No weapon.
He looked completely ordinary.
"Daniel."
I stared.
"You have my daughter."
"Yes."
"Bring her to me."
"You can have her."
He gestured.
A door opened.
Hope was brought inside by a woman.
I moved forward.
Claire grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
Julian smiled.
"Good."
He nodded toward Claire.
"She taught you caution."
I stared at him.
"You know her?"
"Of course."
He looked at Lydia.
"I know all of you."
Then he looked at me.
"Your father spent twenty years preparing you."
"He never told me anything."
"He loved you."
"Then why did he lie?"
"Because he knew the moment you understood the truth, you would become his successor."
I looked at the ledger.
"What do you want?"
"The trust."
"You can't have it."
"You don't control it."
I looked at Claire.
She whispered,
"Not yet."
Julian smiled.
"Exactly."
He walked toward me.
"Your daughter's first birthday is tomorrow."
I froze.
"How do you know?"
"Because everyone is waiting."
"For what?"
"The trust opens at midnight."
"What happens then?"
"The ledger becomes public."
"And?"
"The names."
He smiled.
"Every corrupt official. Every crime. Every hidden account."
My father's firewall.
A secret database.
The trust was the key.
"Then why don't you just take it?"
"Because only Hope's blood can unlock it."
My stomach turned.
Julian said,
"Your daughter is the key."
"No."
"Exactly."
He nodded toward the men.
"Take Daniel."
Claire stepped forward.
"Don't."
Julian looked at her.
"Claire Bennett."
Then he smiled.
"I was wondering when you'd realize your husband was never the person I needed."
Claire froze.
Julian continued.
"The person I need is his daughter."
He looked at Hope.
"And tomorrow night, she turns one."
May you like
He wasn't talking about her birthday.
He was talking about the opening of a war.
