Chapter 11 - The Family I Never KnewMy Entire Childhood Had Been Built on a Lie

I couldn't speak.
My mother.
Not my mother.
Claire's mother.
Emily's mother.
My father's former partner.
The woman who had orchestrated everything.
Lydia Vale.
My real mother.
I sat against the filing cabinet.
"Why?"
Claire knelt beside me.
"Your father took you when you were a baby."
"From her?"
"To protect you."
"From what?"
"From the network."
I laughed bitterly.
"So the woman who raised me wasn't my mother."
"No."
"My real mother killed my father."
"Yes."
"And Samantha..."
"Is your half-sister."
I looked at Emily.
She looked just as devastated.
"So that's why she looked familiar."
Emily nodded.
"I thought I recognized you too."
My whole life rearranged itself.
Memories.
Photographs.
Family dinners.
Stories about my childhood.
All edited.
All incomplete.
Victor found another document.
He handed it to me.
It was an adoption record.
Daniel Mercer.
Father: Adrian Vale.
Mother: Lydia Vale.
The adoptive parents' names were my so-called parents.
I read the papers again.
Then Claire said,
"There's more."
I looked at her.
"Of course there is."
"Your father didn't just hide you."
"What else?"
"He hid your inheritance."
"The trust."
"Yes."
"But it isn't money."
"Not all of it."
Claire took out another document.
"The trust owns seventeen properties."
I stared.
"What?"
"Hotels."
"Warehouses."
"Office buildings."
"Two private airfields."
"An offshore company."
I laughed.
"You've got to be kidding me."
"No."
"Then why was I living like an idiot?"
"Because your father didn't want you to know."
"He let me believe I had a normal life."
"He wanted you away from the business."
I thought about all the nights I'd complained about money.
About Samantha.
About the stupid bracelet.
About how hard I thought my life was.
I had been sitting on an empire without knowing it.
Then Claire said,
"There's a condition."
I looked at her.
"The trust isn't yours yet."
"Because Hope has to turn one."
"Correct."
"Who controls it now?"
She looked at Victor.
He answered.
"The trustee."
"Who?"
Victor didn't respond.
Emily whispered,
"I know."
We all turned.
"My mother."
Silence.
"She's the trustee?"
"Yes."
"Then she has access."
"Not directly."
"What does she need?"
Emily stared at me.
"Your signature."
My blood went cold.
"On what?"
"The document that transfers control."
Suddenly the entire story made sense.
Lydia didn't need me dead.
She needed me obedient.
She needed Samantha to keep me distracted.
She needed Victor to manipulate the company.
She needed Claire removed.
And now, with Hope missing from the public eye, she could force me to sign.
I looked at Claire.
"That's why you took Hope."
"Yes."
"To keep her away from them."
"Yes."
My voice cracked.
"You could have trusted me."
Claire looked at me sadly.
"You weren't trustworthy."
She wasn't wrong.
Then the building's lights flickered.
Victor checked the window.
Cars were arriving.
Dozens of them.
Emily stood.
"They found us."
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through.
Warm.
Calm.
Familiar.
My mother's voice.
"Daniel."
I couldn't breathe.
"You've been looking for me."
I said nothing.
She laughed softly.
"Don't worry."
A pause.
"I have Hope."
My entire body went cold.
Claire screamed,
"No!"
My mother continued.
"Come alone."
"Where?"
"You'll know the place."
"Don't touch my daughter."
"I won't."
Then the line went dead.
Victor looked at me.
"Where?"
I already knew.
The house I grew up in.
May you like
The place where every lie had started.
My childhood home.
