Chapter 8 - THE DEAD WOMAN'S SECOND LIFEGraham spent the next hour tearing apart every official record he had ever trusted.

Birth certificates.
Death records.
Insurance documents.
Bank files.
Family archives.
Every document involving his mother, Eleanor Grant, was suddenly suspicious.
The car accident had happened when Graham was twenty.
He remembered the funeral.
The coffin.
The closed lid.
The flowers.
But he realized something horrifying.
He had never seen her body.
He had never seen the accident scene.
He had never received the final medical report.
Marcus had handled everything.
Graham called an old family investigator named Daniel Shaw.
Daniel arrived within forty minutes.
When Graham showed him the footage, he went silent.
"You recognize her?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
"Because I've been looking for her for ten years."
Graham stared.
"What?"
"Claire hired me."
Graham's mouth went dry.
"She never told me."
"She didn't want you involved."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at Maisie.
"Because Claire believed the people around you were compromised."
Graham looked at Sloane.
Daniel continued.
"She suspected a private network was using wealthy families' trusts."
"What kind of network?"
"They locate beneficiaries who are minors."
"Then?"
"They create behavioral complaints."
"Then remove them from the home."
"And take control of their assets?"
"Eventually."
Graham's face hardened.
"How many children?"
Daniel hesitated.
"At least twelve."
Sloane covered her mouth.
"What?"
"They use private treatment centers, emergency guardianships, and compliant medical professionals."
Graham stared at Maisie.
"And Evelyn Hart?"
"One of the doctors."
"Marcus?"
"Legal facilitator."
"And my mother?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Founder."
Silence.
Graham stepped toward him.
"Why would my mother do this?"
Daniel sighed.
"Because she believed wealthy children should be protected from irresponsible parents."
"That doesn't explain kidnapping."
"She doesn't call it kidnapping."
"What does she call it?"
"Asset preservation."
Graham laughed bitterly.
"My daughter is an asset."
"To them."
Graham turned away.
Then Daniel pulled out a file.
"There is one thing Claire discovered that could destroy all of them."
"What?"
"The original trust agreement."
"Where is it?"
"Missing."
"Missing?"
"Marcus took it."
Sloane spoke.
"No."
Everyone turned.
She looked at Graham.
"I know where it is."
"Where?"
"At Haven Ridge."
Graham stared.
"How do you know?"
"Because Marcus showed it to me."
"What does it say?"
Sloane's eyes filled with tears.
"It names the beneficiary."
"Maisie."
"Yes."
"So?"
Sloane whispered:
"It also names a successor guardian."
Graham's heart sank.
"Who?"
"Eleanor Grant."
His dead mother.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Then we have a problem."
Graham looked at him.
"What?"
"If Eleanor is alive and legally recognized as the successor guardian, she may already have authority."
"How?"
"Because the trust predates the guardianship filing."
Graham felt sick.
"So she could take Maisie tomorrow?"
Daniel nodded.
"Legally, possibly."
"Unless we prove she's alive?"
"That wouldn't be enough."
"Why?"
"Because you would need to prove the trust was altered through fraud."
Graham looked at Sloane.
"Can we prove it?"
Sloane shook her head.
"Not without the original."
Daniel stared at the clock.
"Then we get it."
Graham grabbed his coat.
"We go to Haven Ridge."
"No," Daniel said.
Graham stopped.
"Why?"
Daniel pointed to Maisie.
"Because that's exactly where they want you to go."
Graham looked toward his daughter.
"Then what do we do?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"We make them think you're still playing by their rules."
Sloane looked at him.
"And how do we do that?"
Daniel smiled grimly.
"We let Graham go through with the wedding."
Graham stared.
"The wedding is canceled."
"To them."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Not to the people watching you."
Graham understood.
He would pretend to continue.
Pretend nothing had changed.
Pretend Sloane was still his future wife.
Then they would lure the people behind the scheme into making one mistake.
But before they could leave, a message appeared on Graham's phone.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
A photograph.
Maisie sleeping in her bedroom.
Taken that morning.
Underneath it were five words:
WE HAVE HER WHEN YOU SLEEP.
Graham's blood turned cold.
He grabbed Maisie.
She was in front of him.
Safe.
For now.
Then another message appeared.
THE BRIDE IS NOT YOUR ENEMY.
Graham looked at Sloane.
May you like
The final message arrived.
YOUR FAMILY IS.
