Chapter 14 - THE LAST RECORDINGThe tunnel led beneath the old railway district.

Police flooded the station.

Marcus was alive.

Wounded.

Sloane surrendered immediately.

Graham stood beside Daniel, staring into the darkness where his daughter had disappeared.

"We need a way in."

Daniel nodded.

"There's a service tunnel."

They followed it.

At the end was a locked steel door.

Behind it was an underground office.

Empty.

Except for a desk.

And a tape recorder.

Graham pressed play.

Claire's voice returned.

"If Graham has reached this room, then Eleanor has taken Maisie."

Graham closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

"I need you to understand the final piece."

A pause.

"The trust is not what Eleanor thinks."

Graham looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

The recording continued.

"I never moved the voting shares into Maisie's trust."

Graham frowned.

"What?"

"I moved them into a secondary trust."

"One Eleanor cannot touch."

Daniel stared.

Claire said:

"The beneficiary is not Maisie."

A pause.

"It is Graham."

Graham froze.

The trust was his.

Not Maisie's.

He had been the real beneficiary all along.

Claire had created the entire structure as a trap.

Eleanor could only access it by proving Graham incapable.

The guardianship scheme was designed to make that happen.

Claire continued.

"Every document they use to remove you is evidence."

Graham stared.

"The fraudulent behavioral report. The forged medical records. The emergency guardianship. The signature. Every lie creates another legal trail."

Daniel whispered:

"She built a case."

"Yes."

Claire's voice trembled.

"I knew they would try to use Maisie."

She paused.

"I also knew they would underestimate you."

Graham's eyes filled.

"I'm sorry."

The recording continued.

"And I knew one person would have to betray you."

Sloane.

Graham looked down.

Claire said:

"Sloane has been threatened by Marcus."

"Do not trust her completely."

"But do not assume she is your enemy."

Graham closed his eyes.

Then Claire said the words that changed everything.

"The person you must fear is not the person taking Maisie."

A pause.

"It is the person who taught her how to survive."

Graham looked toward Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

The tape clicked.

Claire continued.

"Maisie knows more than she has ever told you."

Graham's heart stopped.

The recording ended.

Then a small speaker in the corner activated.

A child's voice filled the room.

Maisie.

"Daddy?"

Graham spun.

A live feed appeared.

Maisie was sitting in a car.

Eleanor was driving.

But Maisie was holding something.

The silver ring.

Graham stared.

"Maisie!"

She looked at the camera.

Her eyes were strangely calm.

"Don't come after Grandma."

Graham's chest tightened.

"Why?"

"Because that's what she wants."

Eleanor's head turned slightly.

"What are you doing?"

Maisie continued.

"Daddy, Mommy told me never to tell you this unless I was in danger."

Graham stepped closer to the screen.

"What?"

Maisie whispered:

"Mommy didn't die that night."

Graham froze.

"What?"

"She was alive when Grandma left."

Daniel stared.

"What happened after?"

Maisie swallowed.

"I heard Mommy talking."

"To who?"

"Grandma."

"Then what?"

"Mommy told her the truth."

"What truth?"

Maisie looked directly at the camera.

"That I'm not the reason the trust exists."

Graham frowned.

"Then what is?"

Maisie whispered:

"You are."

The feed flickered.

Then Eleanor leaned into frame.

She looked straight at Graham.

"Come find us."

The screen went black.

Daniel stared.

Graham turned.

"Trace it."

"We're trying."

"And?"

"Too many relays."

Graham clenched his fists.

Then one investigator rushed into the room.

"Mr. Grant!"

"What?"

"We found the original hospital file."

"Where?"

"Someone mailed it to the police an hour ago."

Graham opened the envelope.

Inside was one final page.

A DNA report.

Not between Maisie and Eleanor.

Between Eleanor and Claire.

The result was clear.

They were sisters.

Graham stared.

His mother and his wife were biologically related.

Claire had never been a stranger to the Grant family.

She was Eleanor's daughter.

And Graham's own wife.

That meant Maisie was not only Graham's daughter.

She was Eleanor's granddaughter.

And Claire's mother.

Graham looked at the report again.

Then another line caught his attention.

MATERNAL SAMPLE SOURCE: VERIFIED.

DATE OF COLLECTION:

One year after Claire's death.

Graham's blood turned cold.

The sample had been collected after Claire died.

That was impossible.

May you like

Unless Claire was alive.

Somewhere.
