Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE STATIONThe abandoned station smelled of rust and rain.

Graham entered alone.
Sloane waited outside with Daniel and police surveillance hidden beyond the perimeter.
Marcus Bell stood on the platform.
He wore a dark suit.
Calm.
Perfect.
As if nothing had happened.
"Where is my daughter?"
Marcus smiled.
"You finally understand."
"Where is she?"
"With someone who cares about her future."
Graham stepped forward.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"She murdered Claire."
Marcus sighed.
"That's your conclusion."
"Then give me another one."
Marcus smiled.
"You've always been emotional."
Graham grabbed him.
"Where is Maisie?"
Marcus pulled a folder from his coat.
"You're going to want this."
Graham opened it.
Inside was the original trust agreement.
His name.
Claire's.
Maisie's.
And Eleanor's.
But there was one clause Graham had never seen.
If Graham was found legally incapable of protecting the beneficiary, control of the voting shares would transfer to the successor guardian.
He stared.
"She planned this."
"Years ago."
"Claire knew."
"Too late."
Graham looked up.
"What happened the night Claire died?"
Marcus smiled.
"Ask Sloane."
Graham's jaw tightened.
"She tried to save Claire."
"She tried."
"Then tell me."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Claire discovered something she was never supposed to know."
"What?"
"Maisie's birth."
Graham frowned.
"We already proved she is my biological daughter."
"That's not what I mean."
Marcus opened another file.
A laboratory report.
"Maisie was conceived using an embryo."
Graham stared.
"What?"
"Claire couldn't carry a pregnancy."
Graham's face went blank.
"That's impossible."
"Look."
The report described an IVF procedure.
Anonymous donor.
Embryo implantation.
Claire had been Maisie's legal mother.
But another document showed something else.
DNA analysis.
There was a maternal match.
Not Claire.
Eleanor.
Graham's world tilted.
"No."
Marcus whispered:
"Maisie's biological mother is your mother."
Graham stared at the report.
"That means nothing."
"It means everything."
"Claire raised her."
"Yes."
"Claire was her mother."
"Legally."
Graham shook his head.
"This changes nothing."
"It changes who can claim the trust."
Graham understood.
Eleanor had biological connection.
The trust had been drafted with a clause involving blood descendants.
Marcus continued.
"Claire changed the trust after discovering the truth."
"To protect Maisie."
"Yes."
"From Eleanor."
"Yes."
Graham's expression hardened.
"Then why would Eleanor have been named successor guardian?"
"Because Claire needed the trust to appear legitimate."
Graham stared.
"What?"
"If Eleanor was removed entirely, the original trust could be challenged."
Marcus smiled.
"Claire thought she could control the situation."
"She couldn't."
"No."
Marcus's voice became cold.
"Because she trusted you."
Graham looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
"You signed the power of attorney."
"I was tricked."
"Perhaps."
"Who forged it?"
Marcus leaned closer.
"I didn't."
"Then who?"
A voice came from behind.
"I did."
Graham turned.
Sloane stood there.
Holding a gun.
Graham froze.
Sloane's face was wet with tears.
"I had to."
Marcus smiled.
"There she is."
Graham whispered:
"Sloane."
"I'm sorry."
"Put it down."
"I can't."
Marcus stepped aside.
"You see, Graham? She was never protecting you."
Sloane's hand shook.
Marcus continued:
"She was protecting herself."
Graham stared at her.
"Did you forge my signature?"
Sloane closed her eyes.
"Yes."
His chest tightened.
"Why?"
"Marcus threatened my family."
"And you chose my daughter."
"No."
She opened her eyes.
"I chose to survive."
Marcus smiled.
Then Graham noticed something.
Sloane's gun was pointed at Marcus.
Not him.
Marcus noticed too late.
She fired.
The shot exploded through the station.
Marcus dropped.
Graham grabbed Sloane.
"What did you do?"
She was crying.
"I lied."
A voice echoed from the darkness.
"No."
Everyone froze.
Eleanor stepped onto the platform.
Behind her stood Maisie.
Her small hands were tied.
Graham's heart shattered.
Eleanor looked at Sloane.
"That was your last useful act."
Graham took a step.
"Let her go."
Eleanor smiled.
Then she pulled out a phone.
On the screen was a live video of Graham's house.
The hidden room.
The files.
The evidence.
She pressed delete.
One by one, the recordings disappeared.
"You came prepared," Graham said.
"I built this family."
Eleanor looked at Maisie.
"And now I will take back what was stolen from me."
Then the police sirens began approaching.
Eleanor smiled.
"Too late."
May you like
She grabbed Maisie.
And vanished into the tunnel beneath the station.
