Chapter 5 - The Mother in the ShadowsRachel thought she had misunderstood.

“Alive?”
Victor nodded.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Then what do you know?”
Victor looked exhausted.
“She disappeared after Project Mercy.”
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Victor rubbed his forehead.
“She discovered what your father was really doing.”
Daniel stared.
“What was he doing?”
Victor hesitated.
“Tracking patients.”
Rachel frowned.
“Why?”
“To identify people with certain genetic markers.”
The room went silent.
Daniel asked, “For what?”
Victor's expression hardened.
“Leverage.”
He explained that Project Mercy had begun as an attempt to secretly track high-value individuals through hospital records.
Politicians.
Corporate executives.
People with powerful enemies.
Medical information made excellent blackmail material.
Rachel's mother discovered the database.
She threatened to expose it.
So she vanished.
Rachel looked sick.
“My mother ran because she found out.”
Victor nodded.
“Your father protected the project.”
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“And you?”
“I helped build parts of it.”
Rachel looked at Victor with disgust.
“Then why help us now?”
Victor lowered his eyes.
“Because I have been afraid for seventeen years.”
“Of whom?”
He looked toward the window.
“Lucian.”
Daniel froze.
“My cousin?”
Victor nodded.
“Lucian Moretti never accepted your father's death.”
Daniel's cousin had disappeared years ago after a violent dispute over control of the company.
Everyone believed he had fled overseas.
Victor continued.
“He believes your father stole everything from him.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“And now?”
“Now he wants what belongs to you.”
Rachel understood.
“The company.”
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Rachel.
“Something much more valuable.”
“What?”
“Project Mercy.”
Daniel stared.
“The database?”
“It still exists.”
Rachel's face went pale.
“And someone is trying to access it.”
Victor nodded.
“You're the only person who can recognize the anomalies.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Because she had spent years investigating corrupted medical supply records.
She had the exact skills required to find the hidden data.
Rachel whispered:
“They recruited me without me knowing.”
Victor said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Later that night, Rachel returned to her room.
She found another note.
You wanted the truth about your mother.
Beneath it was an address.
And one sentence.
Come alone if you want to see her.
Rachel stared at it.
She should have shown Daniel.
Instead, fear made her act.
She left.
But Daniel noticed the missing car.
He followed.
The address led to an abandoned church outside the city.
Rachel entered alone.
A woman stood near the altar.
Older.
Thin.
Silver streaks in her dark hair.
Rachel stopped.
The woman turned.
Their eyes met.
Rachel knew.
No photograph was needed.
No file.
No explanation.
“Mom?”
The woman covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
Rachel ran to her.
They embraced.
For several seconds, Rachel forgot everything.
The bruises.
The threats.
The lies.
The Moretti family.
Her mother's voice trembled.
“I thought I'd never see you again.”
“You're alive.”
“I had to be.”
“Why didn't you come back?”
Her mother pulled away.
“Because they would have killed you.”
“Who?”
“Elise looked at the church doors.
“The people still protecting Project Mercy.”
Rachel's heart raced.
“Is Daniel one of them?”
Her mother went silent.
That silence terrified Rachel.
“Mom.”
“I don't know what Daniel knows.”
“He's helping me.”
“He's a Moretti.”
“He's my husband.”
Her mother looked at her.
“You don't understand what that family is capable of.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No. I understand what someone is trying to make me believe.”
Then the lights in the church went out.
Elise grabbed Rachel.
“Get down.”
A shot cracked through the darkness.
Rachel screamed.
Her mother pushed her beneath a wooden pew.
Another shot.
Then footsteps.
Someone moved through the church.
Elise whispered:
“They found me.”
Rachel reached for her.
“Mom?”
No answer.
Rachel crawled forward.
The pew was empty.
Her mother had disappeared.
Only a small pendant remained on the floor.
Rachel picked it up.
Inside was a tiny photograph.
Daniel's father.
Elise.
And a third person.
A little girl.
Rachel.
But on the back was a message.
Your mother didn't disappear to protect you.
May you like
Rachel stared at it.
She disappeared because she knew who your real father was.
