Chapter 1 - The Bruise Beneath Her ShirtWhen Rachel whispered, “I thought you told them to,” Daniel Moretti went completely still.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

The bedroom was quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner and the faint ticking of the antique clock near the window.

Daniel had been reaching for his wife's waist.

Rachel had recoiled as though his hand carried a weapon.

“Please don't touch me there.”

Now her loose sleep shirt had shifted.

The bruise around her ribs was impossible to miss.

It wasn't one bruise.

There were several.

Dark fingerprints overlapped one another beneath her left side.

Daniel stared at them.

Then he looked at Rachel.

His voice dropped.

“Who did this?”

Rachel swallowed.

“I thought you ordered them to.”

“Ordered who?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Rachel.”

“I don't know their names.”

Daniel took one step toward her.

She flinched.

He stopped immediately.

That tiny movement hurt more than any accusation.

Daniel Moretti had spent half his life watching powerful men fear him.

He had never imagined his wife would be afraid to let him touch her.

“Did someone come into the house?”

“No.”

“Did someone follow you?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you fall?”

“No.”

“Did someone hurt you?”

Rachel's lips trembled.

“I thought you wanted me to look different.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“You said I needed to change.”

“I never said that.”

“You did.”

“When?”

Rachel looked at him.

“You don't remember?”

“I remember every conversation I've had with you.”

She laughed weakly, but there was no humor in it.

“Then maybe you don't know what you've been saying to everyone else.”

Daniel's chest tightened.

“Rachel, look at me.”

She hesitated.

“Did I send someone to hurt you?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

“Then why did you say you thought I did?”

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

“Because they told me.”

“Who?”

Silence.

Daniel walked to the other side of the room and forced his hands open.

He needed to think.

He needed facts.

Six weeks ago, Rachel Morgan had been a supply-control specialist at St. Catherine Private Medical Center.

She had never belonged to Daniel's world.

She didn't know the rules.

She didn't understand why some doors were better left unopened.

And yet, she had opened one.

It started with a shipment.

Northshore Emergency Systems had delivered twelve emergency machines to St. Catherine.

Rachel noticed something wrong with the serial numbers.

She compared them with the manufacturer's database.

They didn't match.

She reported it.

Her manager dismissed her.

Rachel kept digging.

Then she discovered something even stranger.

The receiving log claimed the equipment had arrived at 2:10 p.m.

The carrier's digital record showed the truck hadn't left the warehouse until 8:16 p.m.

Rachel refused to sign the paperwork.

That decision saved a life.

One of the machines was about to be used on an emergency patient.

Rachel stopped the procedure.

A biomedical technician inspected the equipment.

The machine had a hidden defect.

The patient survived.

Her name was Emma Moretti.

Daniel's only sister.

That was how Rachel entered the Moretti family.

Not through wealth.

Not through romance.

Through a shipment of dangerous equipment and a truth nobody wanted uncovered.

Daniel met her that afternoon.

He expected a frightened employee.

Instead, Rachel placed the records in front of him.

“Someone is using your company to move equipment that shouldn't be here.”

Daniel stared at the documents.

Then at Rachel.

“You're not afraid of me.”

“Should I be?”

“No.”

His answer came quietly.

“You should be afraid of whoever forged these records.”

Their investigation brought them closer.

Too close.

Six weeks later, Rachel became Daniel's wife.

And then the messages started.

At first they were harmless.

Anonymous notes.

You don't belong here.

Then:

Daniel is getting tired of your body.

Then:

He wants you thinner.

Rachel ignored them.

Until someone slipped a photograph beneath her bedroom door.

It showed her leaving the hospital.

Across the image, someone had written:

He watches everything.

After that, things changed.

Her food went missing.

Her clothes were altered.

A dress she loved disappeared from her closet.

When she asked Daniel about it, he told her he knew nothing.

She wanted to believe him.

But then strangers began approaching her.

Two men outside the private garage.

A woman near the hospital.

Another man at a café.

They all repeated the same message.

“Mr. Moretti wants you to improve.”

“You need to lose weight.”

“You're embarrassing him.”

Rachel didn't know who to trust.

Tonight, she had finally broken.

Daniel returned to the bedroom.

“Show me your phone.”

Rachel hesitated.

“Please.”

She handed it over.

Daniel opened the messages.

His expression hardened.

There were dozens.

Most had been deleted.

But several remained.

He told us to keep you obedient.

He doesn't want anyone seeing you like this.

If you gain more weight, he'll replace you.

Daniel looked up.

“Who sent these?”

“I don't know.”

He kept scrolling.

Then he froze.

The newest message had been sent twelve minutes earlier.

He knows.

Daniel slowly turned the phone toward Rachel.

There was a photo attached.

A picture of the two of them in their bedroom.

Taken tonight.

Taken from inside the house.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then at the bedroom door.

Someone had been watching them.

Someone had been inside their home.

And whoever it was had just made one mistake.

They had taken the photograph using Daniel's private security system.

Which meant they had access to his network.

Daniel's voice became very calm.

“Stay here.”

Rachel grabbed his sleeve.

“No.”

He looked down at her hand.

“I won't hurt you.”

“I know.”

She swallowed.

“I'm scared you'll get hurt.”

For the first time that night, Daniel's expression softened.

Then the lights went out.

Rachel gasped.

The security alarm never sounded.

A second later, Daniel's phone buzzed.

One message.

No number.

No name.

Just six words.

You should have left her alone.

Daniel stared at the screen.

May you like

Then he heard footsteps in the hallway.

And they were coming closer.
