Chapter 5 - The Door Beneath the HouseThey returned to the Hart estate before dawn.

The house had been empty for years.
Caleb had inherited it but rarely visited.
The place smelled of dust and old wood.
George led them into the library.
He pointed toward a painting of Caleb's grandfather.
“Behind that.”
Caleb moved the frame.
A small brass keyhole appeared.
He inserted his mother's key.
The wall clicked.
Then slowly opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Olivia stared.
“You knew about this?”
George nodded.
“I was there the night your mother found it.”
Caleb turned on his flashlight.
They descended.
At the bottom was a corridor lined with shelves.
Files.
Boxes.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Caleb opened one box.
His hands began shaking.
Every page documented children transferred between private clinics and wealthy families.
The records went back decades.
George whispered,
“This is what your grandfather built.”
Caleb turned.
“And Martin continued it?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you let him?”
“I didn't.”
George's voice broke.
“He threatened your mother.”
Caleb stared at him.
“He killed her.”
George nodded.
Then Olivia found another box.
Her hands froze.
“What?”
Caleb walked toward her.
She was holding a file.
“Rebecca Bennett.”
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Rebecca holding Lily.
But the date on the photograph was impossible.
It had been taken six months after Rebecca was supposedly killed.
Caleb whispered,
“She was alive.”
George's eyes widened.
“That can't be.”
Olivia turned the photograph over.
On the back was an address.
A warehouse by the river.
And a handwritten message.
“Ask the third child.”
Caleb frowned.
“The third child?”
Olivia looked at Emma.
“No.”
George's face suddenly drained of color.
“Caleb…”
“What?”
“Emma wasn't just another baby.”
The room became silent.
George pointed to a medical record.
The baby's blood type.
The mother's name.
And the father's name.
Caleb read it.
Then he stepped backward.
The father listed on the record was not some stranger.
It was Caleb's own father.
George.
Caleb stared at him.
“You had a child with Rebecca?”
George could barely speak.
“No.”
Olivia whispered,
“That's what the records say.”
Then a noise echoed from the corridor above.
A door slammed.
Someone was inside the estate.
Caleb grabbed the file.
They rushed toward the staircase.
At the top stood a silhouette.
A man in a black coat.
He raised a gun.
“Drop the file.”
Caleb froze.
The stranger removed his hat.
Caleb knew the face.
He had seen it in family photographs.
Martin Hart.
His uncle.
May you like
Alive.
And smiling.
