Chapter 4 - The Night Caleb Stopped Trusting His FamilyThe clinic hallway filled with shadows.

Caleb moved instinctively toward the babies.
Victor shoved the lights off completely.
“Stay down.”
Caleb wanted to demand answers, but the sound of approaching footsteps changed everything.
The door handle turned.
George whispered, “Back exit.”
They moved quickly.
Olivia carried two babies.
Caleb took the third.
George leaned heavily on his cane as they rushed through the emergency corridor.
A crash sounded behind them.
Someone had forced open the clinic door.
Caleb glanced back.
Two men in dark clothes entered.
“Keep moving!” Victor shouted.
They reached the parking garage.
Victor unlocked a black sedan.
“You're coming with me.”
Caleb refused.
“I don't trust you.”
Victor looked at him.
“You shouldn't.”
Then he tossed Caleb the keys to an SUV.
“Go.”
Caleb stared.
“What?”
“Take the woman and the babies.”
“What about you?”
Victor looked toward the garage entrance.
“I'll buy you time.”
A gunshot echoed.
Olivia screamed.
Caleb pulled her into the SUV.
George climbed into the back.
The babies began crying.
Caleb started the engine.
They tore out of the garage.
For ten minutes nobody spoke.
Then George finally said,
“Your mother wasn't killed by accident.”
Caleb's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“What happened?”
“She found the adoption records.”
“And Rebecca?”
“She tried to help her.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Caleb laughed bitterly.
“You were afraid?”
“I thought if you knew the truth, they would come after you too.”
“Who?”
George looked out the window.
“Your uncle Martin.”
Caleb's stomach dropped.
“Uncle Martin died years ago.”
“No.”
George's voice was almost a whisper.
“He disappeared.”
Caleb looked at Olivia.
She was crying silently.
“Did my mother know about the children?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know about Rebecca?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know about Olivia?”
George shook his head.
“Not until the end.”
Caleb frowned.
“What does that mean?”
George hesitated.
Then he handed Caleb a tiny metal key.
“This belonged to your mother.”
Caleb stared at it.
“What does it open?”
“The room beneath the Hart estate.”
Caleb stopped breathing.
“There is no room beneath the estate.”
George smiled sadly.
“You were never supposed to know it existed.”
That night they drove to a safe house Caleb owned outside the city.
They hid Olivia and the children there.
For the first time in years, Caleb sat across from his father without pretending they were simply father and son.
They were two men trapped beneath the weight of an old family secret.
George told him everything.
The Hart family had once controlled several private clinics.
Some of them illegally arranged adoptions.
When Rebecca discovered it, she threatened to expose them.
Then mothers began disappearing.
Caleb's mother started investigating.
She was killed in what police called a robbery.
George never believed it.
Neither did Olivia.
Finally, Caleb asked the question that had haunted him since the square.
“Why were you cleaning my penthouse?”
Olivia looked away.
“I was watching you.”
Caleb froze.
“Watching me?”
“To make sure you stayed safe.”
“From who?”
She reached into the lining of her worn handbag.
Inside was a photograph.
Caleb took it.
It showed him as a child.
His mother stood beside him.
In the background was Martin Hart.
And behind Martin stood Victor.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
The date of Caleb's ninth birthday.
Beneath it, someone had written:
“He is the next heir.”
Caleb looked at his father.
“What does that mean?”
George didn't answer.
His phone rang.
He answered.
The voice on the other end was distorted.
A man said,
May you like
“Bring us the children, or Caleb dies tomorrow.”
Then the call ended.
