Chapter 3 - The Locked RoomWe evacuated Lily from the hospital before sunrise.

Marcus took us to a safe house outside the city.

He told me not to call anyone.

Not friends.

Not relatives.

Not even the police department except through him.

Because someone inside the system was leaking information.

At 6:13 a.m., we received another message.

A video.

I pressed play.

Emily was sitting in a chair.

Her hands weren't visible.

Her face was bruised.

A man stood behind her.

His face was hidden.

His voice came through a distorted speaker.

“You wanted the truth.”

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“James, listen to me.”

The video cut.

Then another clip appeared.

Ryan.

He was standing in an underground parking garage.

Talking to the same masked man.

“You promised she wouldn't come back.”

The masked man replied.

“You were paid to keep her silent.”

Ryan looked terrified.

“She escaped.”

“You lost control.”

“I didn't kill her!”

The video ended.

I looked at Marcus.

“Someone is blackmailing Ryan.”

Marcus nodded.

“Looks like it.”

“But why would Ryan marry Vanessa?”

“Maybe Vanessa knows something.”

I remembered her face when Emily appeared.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

She knew exactly who Emily was.

At noon, Marcus brought us records from the country club.

He had reviewed security footage.

There was something strange.

“Emily didn't arrive through the main entrance.”

“Then how?”

He showed me a camera feed.

A woman in a gray coat entered through a service tunnel at 7:42 p.m.

She appeared to be Emily.

But thirty seconds later, the camera glitched.

When it returned, she was gone.

“Someone disabled the camera remotely,” Marcus said.

“Who had access?”

He pointed to a list.

Ryan.

Vanessa.

The club manager.

And one other person.

I stared at the name.

“Daniel Cross.”

Marcus frowned.

“You know him?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Daniel was Ryan's attorney.”

That name meant nothing to me.

Until Marcus opened another file.

A company registration.

Daniel Cross was listed as director of a private security firm.

A company that had received payments from Ryan.

For the last eight months.

My pulse increased.

“How much?”

Marcus turned the page.

“Forty thousand dollars every month.”

I stared.

“That's nearly three hundred twenty thousand.”

Marcus nodded.

“Almost exactly the amount withdrawn from Emily's account.”

I looked at the sleeping Lily.

Everything was beginning to fit.

The money.

The fake death.

The guards.

The wedding.

Vanessa.

But one question remained.

Why had Emily survived?

And where had she been?

That evening, Marcus managed to locate an abandoned property linked to Ryan.

A farmhouse two hours north.

We drove there after dark.

The house looked empty.

No lights.

No cars.

No footprints.

Marcus entered first.

I followed.

The smell hit me immediately.

Bleach.

Too much bleach.

The basement was locked.

Marcus forced it open.

Inside was a single metal chair bolted to the floor.

Chains hung from the wall.

There were blood stains beneath the chair.

Lily whispered behind me.

“Was Mommy here?”

I turned.

“No.”

But I knew I was lying.

Then I saw something on the floor.

A child's pink hair clip.

Lily's favorite kind.

I picked it up.

She stared.

“That's mine.”

“How did it get here?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Marcus found another clue.

A hidden camera behind the wall.

Still recording.

He pulled the memory card.

We watched the footage.

Night after night.

Someone brought food.

Someone questioned Emily.

Someone beat the table beside her.

But Emily never broke.

Then, on the final night, the recording showed something impossible.

Lily entered the room.

My niece.

Seven years old.

Standing beside Ryan.

And Emily was screaming.

The video ended there.

Lily covered her mouth.

“That wasn't real.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She started trembling.

“I remember that room.”

Marcus went still.

“What did you remember?”

Lily whispered:

“Daddy told me Mommy was sleeping.”

May you like

Then she looked toward the basement door.

“And then he locked it.”
