Chapter 11 - The Daughter They BuriedHer real name was Sarah.

Rachel had been an alias.

Edward had given it to her after she escaped.

Sarah told us she remembered almost nothing about her childhood.

Only flashes.

A woman singing.

A red blanket.

A little girl beside her.

Emily.

They had been separated as children.

Our grandparents had hidden Sarah's existence because she had been diagnosed with a rare genetic condition.

They feared losing control over the family trust.

So they declared her dead.

I wanted to hate my grandfather.

But every new truth made that harder.

Because the man who had built the machinery of control had also built safeguards.

Perhaps he had spent his final years trying to dismantle what he created.

Sarah remembered one thing clearly.

“The archive isn't just digital.”

“What do you mean?”

“There is a physical ledger.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward Lily.

“Your niece knows.”

Lily looked confused.

“I do?”

Sarah crouched beside her.

“Do you remember the red blanket?”

Lily's eyes widened.

“Yes.”

“What was underneath it?”

Lily whispered:

“A box.”

“What was inside?”

“A key.”

I felt a chill.

“What kind of key?”

“Black.”

Marcus exchanged a glance with me.

“Where is it now?”

Lily's face changed.

“Daddy took it.”

When?

The night before the wedding.

Ryan had searched Lily's room.

He had taken the box.

But why?

Because he knew.

Ryan had been scared of Lily discovering the truth.

The same truth my grandfather had hidden.

The physical ledger.

The real master key.

We returned to the old Carter residence.

The house had been abandoned after Ryan purchased it.

The room remained untouched.

Lily led us to a closet.

Behind a loose floorboard, we found scratches.

Someone had opened the compartment recently.

Empty.

Then Sarah noticed something taped beneath the bed.

A note.

In Emily's handwriting.

If James finds this, tell him not to trust the child.

My heart stopped.

“What child?”

Nobody answered.

Then the door creaked.

We turned.

Lily stood behind us.

Holding a black key.

I stared.

“Where did you get that?”

She smiled.

But it wasn't Lily's smile.

Not exactly.

Her expression was strangely calm.

“Daddy told me to keep it safe.”

Marcus reached for his gun.

Sarah stepped backward.

And Lily said something that made every hair on my arms rise.

“Mommy told me you'd come.”

I crouched.

“Lily, sweetheart, what happened?”

She tilted her head.

Then whispered:

“She said the first person who finds the key will die.”

The lights went out.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“Smart girl.”

Edward Cross entered.

May you like

And beside him stood Vanessa.

Alive.
