Chapter 1 - The Woman at the DoorThe ballroom seemed to stop breathing.

For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The violinist had lowered his instrument.
A waiter stood frozen beside a table, a tray of champagne trembling in his hand.
Lily stared at the woman in the doorway as though the entire world had narrowed to one impossible face.
“Mommy?”
The woman gripped the doorframe harder.
Her lips trembled.
“Lily…”
The little girl broke free from my arms.
She ran.
Not walked.
Not hesitated.
Ran straight across the polished floor toward the woman who had supposedly been dead for eight months.
“Mommy!”
The woman dropped to her knees.
Lily collided with her so hard that they nearly fell backward.
And then came the sound that shattered the silence.
A child's sob.
A mother's cry.
The kind of crying that comes from something being broken and finally put back together.
I stood there watching, my fists still clenched.
Behind me, Ryan whispered my name.
“James.”
I turned.
My brother-in-law looked nothing like the confident groom who had been smiling for photographs ten minutes earlier.
His face had drained of color.
His wedding tie hung crooked.
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Opened again.
Vanessa was staring at Emily as if she'd seen a ghost.
Maybe, in a way, she had.
Emily had changed.
She was thinner.
Far thinner.
Her dark hair was cut unevenly and barely reached her shoulders.
There were shadows beneath her eyes.
A pale scar crossed her temple.
But those eyes were hers.
My sister's eyes.
And they were fixed on Ryan.
Not with anger.
With fear.
That frightened me more than anything.
“Get security,” Ryan said suddenly.
One of the guests turned toward him.
“Security? Why?”
Ryan pointed at Emily.
“She isn't supposed to be here.”
My stomach dropped.
Not supposed to be here?
I took one step forward.
“What do you mean?”
Ryan backed away.
“I don't know this woman.”
Emily looked up.
Her face crumpled.
“Ryan.”
He flinched at the sound of his own name from her mouth.
“You know me.”
“No.”
“Ryan…”
“You're confused.”
He turned to the guests.
“She has been stalking my family.”
Vanessa finally found her voice.
“That's her! That's the woman!”
She pointed wildly.
“That woman has been threatening Ryan for months!”
I looked from Vanessa to Emily.
“Threatening him?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice was weak.
“I was trying to get back to Lily.”
Ryan suddenly lunged toward the little girl.
I intercepted him.
He stopped inches from me.
“Move.”
“No.”
“That's my daughter.”
“And that's my sister.”
His jaw tightened.
“You don't understand what happened.”
“Then explain it.”
He said nothing.
I smiled coldly.
“That usually means I understand more than you think.”
A phone rang somewhere in the ballroom.
Then another.
Then another.
Guests were recording.
Someone had already called the police.
Ryan glanced toward the exits.
That was when I knew.
He wasn't worried about Emily being exposed.
He was worried about what she might say.
I stepped closer.
“You told everyone Emily died in a car accident.”
Ryan swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Then why is she standing here?”
His eyes flicked toward Emily.
For one brief second, the mask disappeared.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Emily squeezed Lily.
“James.”
I looked at her.
She whispered four words.
“He knows where he kept it.”
I frowned.
“Kept what?”
Her face turned white.
But before she could answer, Ryan grabbed a champagne bottle from a nearby table.
Not to attack me.
To smash his own phone.
The crack echoed across the ballroom.
He stared at the shattered screen.
Then whispered:
“They found us.”
I looked toward the entrance.
Two men in black suits had just entered.
They weren't police.
And they weren't wedding security.
One of them locked the ballroom doors.
The other reached inside his jacket.
Emily suddenly screamed.
“JAMES, GET LILY DOWN!”
I grabbed Lily.
May you like
The first gunshot exploded through the ballroom.
And every light went out.
