Chapter 5 - THE TRUST FILEThe private vault beneath Vanguard headquarters had no sign.

No keycard reader.
No keypad.
The door opened only after Marcus pressed his palm against a scanner hidden behind a portrait of my father.
"I didn't know this existed," I whispered.
"You weren't supposed to."
The vault was small.
But the contents were enormous.
Rows of sealed boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Bank certificates.
Property deeds.
And at the center, a black safe.
My name was engraved on it.
CLARA VALE VANCE
Marcus entered a code.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a single folder.
Red.
My father's handwriting covered the front.
TRUST FILE 17
I opened it.
The first page was a legal instrument.
Not a will.
A contingency trust.
The beneficiary was not Julian.
Not Vanguard.
Not even me.
It was my unborn child.
The document stated that if I died under suspicious circumstances during pregnancy, control of certain Vanguard assets would transfer temporarily to the child through a protected trustee.
My hands shook.
"How long had he planned this?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Since your wedding."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because your father never trusted Julian."
I turned the page.
There was another document.
A list of names.
Board members.
Executives.
Bankers.
Political donors.
Private security contractors.
One name had been circled.
Julian Vance.
Next to it was a note.
High risk. Charming. Patient. Greedy.
I stared.
My father had written it before I married Julian.
"What did you know?"
Marcus looked away.
"Not enough."
"That's not an answer."
"My instructions were to monitor him."
"And?"
"And report any attempt to interfere with Vanguard."
"Did you ever tell my father that Julian was seeing Elena?"
"No."
"Why?"
Marcus looked at me.
"Because I didn't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I was told not to interfere in your marriage unless there was proof of criminal conduct."
I laughed bitterly.
"Criminal conduct?"
"He had none until the escalator."
Marcus turned to another file.
"Until now."
Inside was a bank statement.
Julian had transferred $84 million from a Vanguard subsidiary into a private account in the Cayman Islands.
Then another.
And another.
Total:
$413 million.
My father's money.
My husband's theft.
I felt sick.
"What was he doing with it?"
"Buying Castle Holdings."
I looked at Marcus.
"Then the merger isn't a merger."
"No."
"It is an acquisition."
"By Julian."
I flipped through the documents faster.
At the bottom was a list of shell companies.
The same names appeared again and again.
Elena Cross.
Three security contractors.
A private medical firm.
A funeral company.
And one company I recognized.
Vance Genetic Solutions.
I stared at the name.
"Genetic."
Marcus went silent.
"What is this?"
He didn't answer.
I grabbed the file.
Inside were records.
Embryo storage.
Genetic screening.
Anonymous donors.
Then one phrase appeared repeatedly.
VALE LINEAGE CONFIRMATION PROTOCOL.
My hands went cold.
"What did my father do?"
Marcus whispered:
"He believed Vanguard would someday be attacked from inside."
"By whom?"
"By someone who understood the company."
I looked at the documents.
"He created a second inheritance system."
"Yes."
"Using DNA."
"Yes."
My mind raced.
"Elena's baby."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I think the child was selected because of a genetic compatibility."
"With whom?"
He didn't answer.
The vault door suddenly slammed shut.
We both turned.
A red light blinked above it.
Security lockdown.
Marcus rushed to the control panel.
"Someone triggered the emergency seal."
"Can we get out?"
"Not from here."
The lights went off.
Complete darkness.
Then a voice came through the intercom.
Julian.
"Hello, Clara."
I froze.
Marcus whispered:
"Stay behind me."
Julian laughed.
"You really should have listened to your father's final instructions."
"What do you want?"
"You."
"No."
"Not exactly."
His voice became colder.
"I want the file."
I looked at the red folder.
"You mean the truth?"
"I mean what belongs to me."
"It never belonged to you."
Julian's voice sharpened.
"Your father stole my life."
"He rejected you."
"He used me."
"He tested you."
Silence.
Then Julian said:
"And he was right."
My blood froze.
"What?"
"I failed his test."
The vault walls vibrated.
Something metallic crashed outside.
Marcus looked at me.
"He's trying to breach the door."
Julian spoke again.
"You have ten minutes."
"For what?"
"To hand me the trust file."
"And if I don't?"
A pause.
Then:
"I'll make sure your baby becomes the next victim."
The intercom went silent.
I looked down at my stomach.
Marcus's face was grim.
"We need another exit."
"There isn't one."
I looked at the floor.
Then at my father's portrait.
The portrait had always seemed decorative.
But now I noticed something.
The frame was thicker than it should have been.
I stepped toward it.
Pressed the corner.
Nothing.
I pressed again.
A hidden latch clicked.
The wall opened.
Marcus stared.
"What did you just do?"
I looked into the narrow passage beyond.
"My father left me an escape."
But as we stepped inside, a tiny red light blinked in the darkness.
May you like
A camera.
And its lens followed us.
