Chapter 12 - THE BOARDROOM OF LIARSBy nine the next morning, Vanguard's stock had fallen eighteen percent.

Every news channel was discussing my father's alleged secret dealings.

The board had called an emergency session.

Julian arrived first.

I arrived ten minutes later.

This time, the cameras were waiting.

He walked toward me with the expression of a grieving husband.

"Clara."

He lowered his voice.

"You should not have come."

"I hear that a lot."

His eyes flicked toward my stomach.

"Your baby is worth more than you realize."

I smiled.

"Then you're finally admitting it."

He stepped closer.

"I can protect you."

"By killing me?"

His jaw tightened.

"Careful."

"No."

I leaned toward him.

"You be careful."

The boardroom doors opened.

Inside, every director sat waiting.

Julian took the head seat.

I sat opposite him.

The chairman's position remained empty.

An interim chairman began the meeting.

"Mrs. Vance, there are allegations concerning financial irregularities and the validity of your claims to Vanguard."

"I expected that."

Julian smiled.

"Our concerns are not personal."

"Neither are mine."

The interim chairman looked at the documents.

"Mr. Vance claims your father concealed approximately nine hundred million dollars in illegal funds."

Marcus placed a folder on the table.

"We've independently traced the funds."

"To where?" a director asked.

"Castle Holdings."

Silence.

Julian leaned forward.

"That's false."

Marcus distributed bank records.

Then Natalie stood.

"I signed some of those transactions."

Everyone looked at her.

"And I can testify they were authorized by Julian."

Julian's face hardened.

"You're finished."

Natalie looked at him.

"No."

She pressed a button.

A recording began.

Julian's voice.

"Move the money before Clara sees it."

Another voice:

"What about Castle?"

Julian:

"Castle doesn't buy Vanguard. Castle buys the debt."

The boardroom went silent.

The interim chairman stared at Julian.

"You said the merger was strategic."

"It is."

"You planned to make Vanguard insolvent."

Julian stood.

"This is fabricated."

I opened my father's original will.

"No."

I held up the document.

"This is what you were trying to destroy."

Julian's face changed.

"What is that?"

"My father's real will."

The board members leaned forward.

I read the relevant clause aloud.

"The surviving spouse receives no authority over the trust if the spouse has participated in any attempt to fraudulently transfer protected shares."

Julian stared at me.

"You can't prove that."

"I don't need to."

I placed the death certificate beside the transfer form.

"You filed for my shares while I was alive."

A director whispered:

"That is fraud."

Julian looked around.

His allies began backing away.

Then the doors opened.

Police entered.

Everyone stood.

One officer held a warrant.

"Julian Vance."

Julian's face went white.

"On what grounds?"

"Fraud, financial crimes, conspiracy and attempted murder."

He stared at me.

"You did this."

I shook my head.

"No."

I pointed toward the screen.

"You did."

The screen changed.

A new video appeared.

The escalator.

Julian's hand.

My fall.

The exact angle.

The exact moment.

No missing frames.

No ambiguity.

My throat tightened.

The board watched in silence.

Then Julian did something unexpected.

He laughed.

Quietly.

Almost peacefully.

Everyone stared.

He looked at me.

"Do you think this ends with me?"

My blood chilled.

He pressed a small device.

The screen went black.

Then every phone in the room received a photograph.

An infant.

Newborn.

A red hospital bracelet.

The name:

BABY VANCE

But the date was from yesterday.

I stared.

Julian smiled.

"You're protecting the wrong child."

My heart stopped.

"The baby isn't yours."

May you like

Then the door behind me slammed shut.

And from the hallway came the sound of a woman screaming.
