Chapter 14 - THE LAST SIGNATUREWe opened the trust file at 4:03 a.m.

There was one document we had never seen.

A sealed amendment.

The signature belonged to my father.

The witness signature belonged to my mother.

The trustee signature belonged to Marcus.

I stared at all three.

"You knew."

Marcus looked exhausted.

"Yes."

"What does it say?"

He didn't answer.

I opened it.

The amendment was short.

In the event that my daughter survives an attempted murder and the identity of the responsible party is established, all contested inheritance claims shall terminate.

I looked at Julian.

Then at Marcus.

"That's it?"

"No."

Marcus pointed lower.

I read the next clause.

The surviving daughter shall assume temporary control of Vanguard until all criminal assets are liquidated.

My throat tightened.

"Criminal assets?"

My mother nodded.

"Your father wanted you to clean the company."

"So Vanguard was built on stolen money."

"Partly."

"And he left me the job of destroying it."

"Yes."

I looked at Marcus.

"And the ledger?"

"Not Julian's."

"Where is it?"

Marcus looked toward Anna.

She stepped forward.

"My mother had it."

"Where?"

Anna pulled a small key from around her neck.

"The original vault."

There was another vault.

One no one had told me about.

Beneath the cemetery.

We left before sunrise.

The vault was under my father's mausoleum.

I opened the door.

Inside were thousands of pages.

Names.

Payments.

Politicians.

Companies.

Bank accounts.

Judges.

Police.

Executives.

And at the bottom:

CASTLE HOLDINGS.

Julian had not created the network.

He had inherited it.

He had simply decided to use it against Vanguard.

Then I saw the last page.

A handwritten note.

My father's writing.

Julian will believe power is ownership.

He is wrong.

Power is knowing what everyone is afraid to lose.

Underneath:

Clara, if you are reading this, don't destroy Vanguard.

Destroy the people who poisoned it.

I looked at Marcus.

"You knew this existed."

He nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your father ordered me to wait."

"Until what?"

"Until you had someone to protect."

I put my hand over my stomach.

My eyes burned.

Then my phone rang.

It was the police.

"Mrs. Vance."

"Yes?"

"We have Julian."

"Where?"

A pause.

"He's been released."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

"The arrest was compromised."

My mother closed her eyes.

Marcus cursed under his breath.

The officer continued.

"Three officers involved in the transfer were found unconscious."

I looked at the ledger.

Julian had not lost.

He had simply vanished into the machinery my father built.

Then another call came through.

Natalie.

I answered.

"Clara."

She was crying.

"What happened?"

"The boardroom."

"What about it?"

"Julian took control."

"What?"

"He invoked an emergency clause."

"How?"

"He claims you're medically incapable of managing the company."

My blood ran cold.

"Based on what?"

"Your injuries."

"He can't."

"He has doctors."

"Paid doctors."

"Exactly."

I looked toward Marcus.

He understood.

They were going to declare me temporarily incapacitated.

Then put an emergency trustee in place.

Who?

"Who is the trustee?"

Natalie hesitated.

Then said:

"Marcus Hale."

I turned.

Marcus stared at me.

He looked horrified.

"That's impossible."

Natalie's voice cracked.

"Your father named him."

I looked at the trust amendment.

My father's signature.

Marcus's signature.

The same man I had spent days doubting.

The same man who had admitted helping Julian.

And now he was legally positioned to control Vanguard.

I turned toward him.

"Did you know?"

Marcus didn't answer.

That was enough.

Outside, a car stopped.

Headlights swept across the cemetery.

Marcus whispered:

"Clara, run."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

He looked toward the gate.

"Because those aren't Julian's men."

"Then whose are they?"

May you like

Marcus's face changed.

"Your father's."
