Chapter 15 - The truth came slowly.Painfully.

There had not been two babies.
There had been three.
Three girls.
Three families.
Three identities.
And one plan.
Emily Harper had given birth to Lily.
Sarah Carter had given birth to Clara.
And a third woman had given birth to a child whose name had been erased from every record.
That third child was used as the replacement.
The operation had continued for years because no one child could expose the entire system.
But Sarah had discovered the truth.
She knew all three girls.
And she had hidden the evidence before she died.
David stood in the abandoned clinic.
Mikey slept in his arms.
Melissa was crying.
Daniel looked older than ever.
Rebecca was staring at the floor.
âSo where is Clara?â
Thomas had taken her.
But Thomas had not taken her for the trust.
He had taken her because Clara knew something none of them had remembered.
Her mother had hidden the final proof inside her.
Not physically.
In memory.
A childhood song.
A nursery rhyme Sarah used to sing.
Seven notes.
A sequence.
A code.
David suddenly remembered.
Sarah used to sing it every night.
He had thought it was meaningless.
Now he understood.
It was the password to a hidden account.
A trust.
Not the one Thomas wanted.
Something much larger.
An international account containing evidence of every illegal transfer.
Every identity replacement.
Every name.
Every payment.
Every person involved.
Sarah had built a trap for the entire operation.
And Clara was the key.
David looked at Melissa.
âHow did Sarah know?â
âShe knew someone would come after Clara.â
âThen why didn't she tell me?â
âBecause she didn't trust you.â
David flinched.
âWhy?â
âBecause she thought they had changed you.â
âChanged me?â
âThey used drugs.â
David stared.
His missing memories.
His confusion.
The false marriage.
The gaps in his past.
It all came together.
But there was one problem.
Thomas still had Clara.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
âI found him.â
âWhere?â
âThe old family estate.â
David looked at him.
âMy father's house?â
Daniel nodded.
âHe took her there.â
David didn't waste another second.
They drove through the night.
The estate stood at the edge of the city.
Dark.
Silent.
The gates were open.
Inside, every window was lit.
David entered carrying Mikey.
He found Clara in the study.
She was sitting at a desk.
Thomas stood behind her.
A laptop was open.
Thomas looked at David.
âYou finally came.â
David put Mikey down.
âLet her go.â
Thomas shook his head.
âNot until she opens the account.â
Clara looked at David.
âI know how.â
David stepped forward.
âNo.â
Thomas raised the gun.
âTell her.â
Clara's little fingers touched the keyboard.
She entered the seven-note sequence.
The screen changed.
Hundreds of names appeared.
Politicians.
Business owners.
Police officers.
Judges.
Doctors.
Executives.
Then one name appeared at the top.
THOMAS VANE.
Thomas stared.
âWhat?â
Clara looked up.
âYou were never the controller.â
Thomas's face changed.
âWhat did you do?â
âI opened the archive.â
David looked at the screen.
Every file was uploading.
Automatically.
To hundreds of locations.
Thomas rushed toward the computer.
Daniel tackled him.
The gun slid across the floor.
Rebecca grabbed it.
Police sirens surrounded the estate.
Thomas struggled.
âYou think this changes anything?â
David stood beside Clara.
âYes.â
Thomas laughed.
âYou don't know how many people are involved.â
David looked at the screen.
âI don't need to.â
The archive finished uploading.
A final file opened.
It contained one photograph.
Sarah Carter.
Holding Clara as a baby.
Beside her stood Emily Harper.
And another baby.
And behind them, in the doorway, stood David's father.
The caption read:
THE NIGHT THEY CHANGED EVERYTHING.
David stared.
Then a second image appeared.
This one was recent.
Taken only days earlier.
It showed Sarah.
Alive.
David stopped breathing.
âThat isn't possible.â
Clara stared at the image.
âThat woman is Grandma.â
Everyone went silent.
David looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face had gone pale.
Emily stepped closer.
âNo.â
David whispered,
âMy mother is alive.â
The screen refreshed.
A final message appeared.
DAVID, IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS, DO NOT TRUST ANYONE IN THIS ROOM.
Then another line appeared.
NOT EVEN CLARA.
David slowly turned toward his daughter.
Clara was crying.
âDadâŠâ
He stepped closer.
âClara, what does this mean?â
She shook her head.
âI don't know.â
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the mansion.
Mikey began screaming.
When the emergency lights came back on, everyone was still there.
Everyone except Clara.
David turned in panic.
âCLARA?â
Nothing.
A window stood open.
Cold air poured into the room.
On the floor lay the final page of Sarah's message.
David picked it up.
There was only one sentence.
THE GIRL YOU CALLED CLARA FOR SEVEN YEARS WAS NEVER THE GIRL YOU SAVED.
David looked into the darkness outside.
And somewhere beyond the estate gates, a child's voice whispered:
âDaddyâŠâ
Then another child's voice answered.
âDon't follow her.â
David froze.
Two girls.
Two identical voices.
May you like
Two directions.
And for the first time in seven years, he had no idea which one was his daughter.
