Chapter 12 - David couldn't speak.Clara was shaking in his arms.

He held her tighter.

“No matter what anyone says, you're my daughter.”

She nodded.

“But Mom said
”

“Don't listen to her.”

Daniel stood in the doorway.

“You need to.”

David turned.

“Why?”

“Because your daughter isn't the only person who has been lied to.”

David set Clara down carefully.

“What happened here?”

Daniel looked toward the rows of rooms.

“This was an identity processing center.”

David stared.

“Explain.”

“They brought children here.”

“Why?”

“To replace other children.”

David remembered Ryan's explanation.

Daniel nodded.

“Families paid for replacements when their children died.”

David felt sick.

“Why?”

“Because some families had money tied to bloodlines.”

“And Lily?”

“Lily was one of them.”

David looked at Clara.

“So she was replaced?”

Daniel nodded.

“But the program became more than that.”

“What happened?”

“Someone started taking children who weren't even part of the arrangement.”

David's expression hardened.

“Kidnapping.”

“Yes.”

“Who ran it?”

Daniel looked at him.

“You did.”

David froze.

“No.”

Daniel handed him a file.

Inside were photographs.

David standing inside the warehouse.

Signing documents.

Speaking with employees.

Holding children.

David's hand shook.

“This is fake.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't remember because they erased your records.”

“Who?”

“Your own employers.”

David looked at Clara.

“You're saying I worked with them?”

Daniel nodded.

“You were one of the people who discovered what was happening.”

“Then why do I look like I'm involved?”

“Because they needed someone to blame.”

David stared at the documents.

Then he saw one signature.

His own.

But beneath it was something else.

A second signature.

Melissa's.

David's stomach turned.

“Melissa was involved.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She was assigned to you.”

David looked at Daniel.

“As a handler.”

“Yes.”

“Then our marriage
”

“Was arranged.”

David closed his eyes.

Everything he thought was real had become unstable.

His entire marriage.

His family.

His daughter.

His memories.

Then Clara touched his hand.

“Dad?”

He looked at her.

“I remember something.”

“What?”

“The woman who raised me.”

David frowned.

“Melissa?”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“Who?”

“Sarah.”

David froze.

“Your biological mother?”

Clara nodded.

“She used to sing to me.”

David felt a jolt.

Sarah had been dead seven years.

Yet Clara remembered her.

“How?”

Clara pointed to a photograph.

It showed a bedroom.

A small crib.

A woman standing beside it.

Sarah.

David's wife.

And in the crib was a newborn baby.

Clara.

David stared.

“So you are
”

He couldn't finish.

Daniel did.

“She is Sarah's daughter.”

David's eyes filled with tears.

“And Lily?”

Daniel looked away.

“Lily is dead.”

Silence.

David stared at him.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“She died three years ago.”

“You told me she was alive.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“To get you here.”

David's voice became furious.

“Why?”

Daniel's expression finally broke.

“Because the person who killed Lily is still hunting Clara.”

David tightened his fists.

“Who?”

Daniel pointed toward the exit.

David turned.

A shadow stood at the end of the corridor.

A man.

The same man from the surveillance footage.

Daniel whispered,

“He's here.”

The lights went out.

Gunfire erupted.

David dropped behind a wall, shielding Clara.

The corridor filled with screams.

A bullet struck the metal railing.

Daniel fired back.

Then silence.

David waited.

Nothing.

He looked beside him.

Clara was gone.

“Clara?”

No answer.

David ran through the darkness.

“CLARA!”

He found a small pink shoe on the floor.

His daughter's shoe.

He picked it up.

Then he heard a door slam somewhere above.

David ran toward the stairs.

At the top was Melissa.

Holding Clara's hand.

David stopped.

“Melissa!”

She looked at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“You were never supposed to find her.”

David stepped forward.

“Give me my daughter.”

Melissa shook her head.

“She isn't the one you think.”

Then she pulled Clara closer.

And the little girl whispered,

“Dad
”

May you like

She looked terrified.

“That's not my mother.”
