Chapter 13 - David's blood ran cold.Melissa stared at Clara.

Clara stared back.

The girl was shaking.

“David,” Melissa whispered, “don't believe her.”

Clara grabbed his arm.

“She isn't Mom.”

David looked between them.

Melissa's face.

Clara's face.

Nothing made sense.

Then another figure stepped from the darkness.

The woman from the photograph.

Sarah's sister.

David recognized her.

“Rebecca?”

She smiled.

“You finally remembered.”

David backed away.

“How are you alive?”

“I never died.”

“Then who was killed in the crash?”

Rebecca looked at Melissa.

“Someone they wanted you to think was me.”

David felt dizzy.

“Where is Sarah?”

Rebecca's smile disappeared.

“Dead.”

David's chest tightened.

“She died because of this.”

He looked at Melissa.

“You knew.”

Melissa cried.

“I was trying to protect Clara.”

“From Rebecca?”

“No.”

“Then from who?”

Melissa finally whispered,

“From the man who created all of this.”

Rebecca looked terrified.

David noticed.

“You're scared of him too.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Everyone is.”

“Who?”

She looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered one name.

“Carter.”

David froze.

“My name?”

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“The other Carter.”

A man stepped into view.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

He wore a dark suit.

David recognized him from an old family photo.

His father.

David's father.

But his father had been dead for fifteen years.

David stepped backward.

“That's impossible.”

The man smiled.

“Hello, son.”

David couldn't move.

Rebecca began crying.

Melissa looked down.

Clara clutched David's hand.

The man walked closer.

“You have caused me considerable trouble.”

David's voice was barely audible.

“You're dead.”

“I needed you to believe that.”

“Why?”

“Because you inherited something.”

David frowned.

“What?”

“Control.”

“Over what?”

The man smiled.

“Over the trust.”

David suddenly understood.

The children.

The surveillance.

The false identities.

The money.

All of it.

But one question remained.

“Why Clara?”

His father looked at the little girl.

“Because she was never supposed to survive.”

David pulled Clara behind him.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Liar.”

His father sighed.

“Your mother chose Sarah.”

David went still.

“Why?”

“Because Sarah knew too much.”

David's father explained.

Sarah had discovered the identity replacement system.

She planned to expose it.

The only way to silence her was to make her death look accidental.

But before she died, Sarah transferred control of the family trust to her unborn child.

Clara.

David stared.

“So that's why.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted Clara dead so you could control the money.”

His father smiled.

“Exactly.”

David felt rage rise in his chest.

“You murdered my wife.”

“I removed an obstacle.”

“And the children?”

“Collateral.”

David stepped forward.

His father didn't move.

“You think you can stop me?”

David looked around.

At Daniel.

At Rebecca.

At Melissa.

At Clara.

Then he noticed something.

The old hidden camera.

Still blinking.

Recording.

David smiled.

His father frowned.

“What?”

David pulled out his phone.

“I've been recording too.”

His father stepped back.

“You wouldn't.”

“I already did.”

He held up the phone.

A live stream was running.

Not just to Ryan.

To the police.

To the media.

To everyone.

His father lunged.

David pushed him away.

Daniel fired a warning shot into the ceiling.

“Don't!”

Sirens erupted outside.

The building shook with approaching footsteps.

His father stared at David.

“You have no idea what you've started.”

David looked at him.

“Yes.”

He held Clara's hand.

“I'm ending it.”

Police stormed the warehouse.

For the first time in seven years, David felt hope.

Then his phone buzzed.

One new message.

A photograph.

Mikey.

Sleeping in his crib.

Taken ten seconds earlier.

Under the image were five words.

THEY HAVE YOUR SON.

David turned pale.

He looked at Daniel.

“Mikey is at home.”

Daniel's face changed.

May you like

“No.”

David ran.
