Chapter 9 - Thirty-Three Missing MinutesDaniel returned home with one goal.

Find the missing footage.

Margaret was gone.

Her bedroom was locked.

Her closet was half-empty.

“She knew,” Daniel said.

Claire stood behind him.

“She knew you found the tape.”

Nora approached.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“I found a hidden room.”

Daniel turned.

“Where?”

“Behind the pantry.”

They opened a narrow wooden panel.

Inside was a small surveillance station.

Old monitors.

Hard drives.

Cameras.

Files.

Names.

Dates.

Daniel stared.

“She’s been recording the house.”

“For years,” Nora said.

Claire looked horrified.

“Why?”

Daniel opened a folder.

Inside were recordings of arguments.

Private conversations.

Family gatherings.

Ivy sleeping.

Claire entering rooms.

Daniel felt sick.

“She wanted leverage.”

Then he saw a file marked:

ELENA / FINAL NIGHT

He opened it.

The footage began at 7:10 p.m.

Elena entered the kitchen.

Margaret followed.

They argued.

At 7:21, Elena left.

At 7:33, Margaret made a phone call.

At 7:41, she left the house.

At 7:58, Victor arrived.

At 8:12, both returned.

Then the footage stopped.

Daniel stared.

“Where were they?”

Nora looked at the screen.

“Maybe the system has another camera.”

They searched.

A hidden exterior camera appeared.

It showed the driveway.

Margaret’s car leaving.

Victor’s car following.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“She lied.”

“What?”

“She said she never left the house.”

The next file showed something even worse.

At 7:48, Margaret arrived at Elena’s car.

The accident had not happened yet.

Elena was still alive.

She got out.

They argued.

Then Margaret handed her something.

Elena looked at it.

Her face changed.

She stepped backward.

The video angle was poor.

But Daniel could hear her.

“You can’t do this.”

Margaret replied:

“Watch me.”

Then the footage cut.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Where is Elena now?”

Nobody answered.

He rewound.

At the exact moment the image disappeared, he noticed a second vehicle parked behind a tree.

A dark SUV.

The license plate was barely visible.

He enhanced the image.

The plate belonged to an old family company.

A company Daniel had never heard of.

He searched the archives.

The company had been dissolved fifteen years ago.

Its only registered director was…

Margaret Voss.

Daniel’s breathing slowed.

Claire asked, “What is it?”

“The company that owned the SUV.”

“And?”

“It was used the night Elena died.”

Nora looked toward the hallway.

Suddenly the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

The entire house went black.

Then a crash came from upstairs.

Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“What was that?”

Daniel ran.

A window in the nursery was shattered.

The hard drive they had been examining was gone.

And Ivy was missing.

“IVY!”

Claire screamed.

Daniel ran through the house.

“Nora, lock the doors!”

He found the back door open.

Fresh tire tracks marked the wet driveway.

Then Ivy’s pink scarf lay on the ground.

Claire began shaking.

Daniel picked it up.

A message was attached.

He read it.

His face drained of color.

BRING THE LEDGER TO THE OLD MILL. COME ALONE.

Below it was another line.

OR YOUR DAUGHTER PAYS FOR ELENA’S MISTAKE.

Claire grabbed the note.

“They have Ivy.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You should have stopped.”

Daniel froze.

“Where is my daughter?”

“She’s safe.”

“Put her on.”

A pause.

Then Ivy cried:

“Dad!”

Daniel nearly collapsed with relief.

“Ivy! Where are you?”

“Daddy, Grandma…”

The line cut.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said Grandma.”

Daniel’s face became stone.

He grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going to the mill.”

Claire caught his arm.

“No.”

“They have Ivy.”

“And that is exactly what they want.”

Daniel looked at her.

Then he realized.

The fountain.

The trust.

The footage.

The threats.

This wasn’t just about money.

Someone was trying to force Daniel into making one irreversible mistake.
