Chapter 14 - The Secret Behind the GraveDaniel refused to believe it.

“My father is dead.”

Nora looked at him.

“I saw him.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Where?”

“At the old foundation office.”

Victor stepped closer.

“That’s impossible.”

Nora handed him the drive.

“Watch.”

Victor connected it.

A security video appeared.

A man entered a dark office.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar posture.

Daniel stared.

“No.”

The man turned toward the camera.

It was unmistakable.

Daniel’s father.

Alive.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ivy clung to her hand.

The video showed Arthur meeting Margaret.

Then Richard.

Then Victor.

The three men and one woman had gathered around a table.

Arthur spoke.

“The child changes the trust.”

Margaret answered.

“Then we need Claire gone.”

Richard asked:

“And Daniel?”

Arthur looked coldly at the camera.

“He can be convinced.”

Daniel’s stomach twisted.

The fountain incident had been planned by all of them.

Not just Margaret.

His father had been alive.

Watching.

Controlling.

Waiting for the right moment.

Daniel looked at Victor.

“You knew?”

Victor shook his head.

“I thought he was dead.”

Arthur had used the years to build a hidden network.

Margaret had been one part of it.

Victor another.

Richard another.

But why had Elena survived?

Because she had escaped.

And why had Arthur kept her alive?

Because he still needed her knowledge.

Daniel turned toward the door.

“I’m finding him.”

He drove to the old family estate.

A property that had been abandoned for years.

The gates stood open.

Inside the house, every room was dark.

Then a light appeared in the study.

Daniel entered.

Arthur sat behind the desk.

Older.

Calm.

As though eighteen years had never passed.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel could barely speak.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Arthur smiled.

“Because dying was useful.”

“You let me bury you.”

“It was necessary.”

“For what?”

“For the family.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You ruined my life.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No. Your mother did.”

Daniel stared.

“You used her.”

“Of course.”

“You used Victor.”

“Yes.”

“Richard.”

“Yes.”

“You used Elena.”

Arthur’s expression changed.

“She was reckless.”

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You nearly killed Ivy.”

“I never wanted the child hurt.”

“You planned the fountain.”

Arthur shook his head.

“That was Margaret’s idea.”

“But you approved it.”

“Yes.”

“Why Claire?”

Arthur leaned back.

“Because she asked too many questions.”

“What did she discover?”

“The foundation accounts.”

Daniel felt the pieces align.

Claire had once worked with the foundation’s financial records.

She had noticed transfers.

She had accidentally discovered the hidden company.

She had been investigating quietly.

Margaret had panicked.

Arthur had taken control.

And the fountain was the first public move.

Daniel spoke slowly.

“You wanted me to divorce Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because when the baby is born, the foundation loses centralized control.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Your children inherit voting rights.”

“And you wanted those rights.”

“I wanted the family restored.”

“You mean controlled.”

Arthur smiled.

“Control is what keeps families from destroying themselves.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You destroyed ours.”

Arthur stood.

“You have no idea what your mother did after my death.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell me.”

Arthur hesitated.

“She tried to change the trust.”

“What else?”

“She arranged the accident.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Elena’s crash.”

Arthur looked toward the window.

“I told her I would leave the country.”

Daniel stared.

“You were involved.”

“I was.”

“But Margaret caused the crash?”

Arthur nodded.

“She thought if Elena disappeared, nobody would question the money.”

Daniel felt sick.

“And you let her live?”

“I intervened after.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed her location.”

Arthur gestured toward a staircase.

“She was hidden there.”

Daniel remembered Elena’s words.

For eighteen years.

The nightmare finally made sense.

Every secret connected.

But Arthur had made one mistake.

He had underestimated Daniel.

Daniel had already called the police.

Sirens sounded outside.

Arthur looked toward the window.

“You think this ends here?”

Daniel said nothing.

Arthur smiled.

“It won’t.”

Police entered.

Arthur was arrested.

Margaret had already been taken into custody.

Victor agreed to testify.

Richard surrendered the remaining financial records.

For the first time in eighteen years, the Voss family secret was no longer hidden.

But one question remained.

Why had Arthur kept Elena alive instead of silencing her?

Daniel looked at her.

Elena slowly handed him one final envelope.

“My answer is inside.”

He opened it.

His father had written it.

The final sentence read:

If Elena ever returns, ask her what she did with the missing money.

Daniel looked up.

Elena’s face had gone pale.

Claire noticed.

“What money?”

Elena didn’t answer.

May you like

And Daniel realized there was still one final secret.

One that might change everything.
