Chapter 12 - The Name Elena Never SpokeThe room went silent.

Daniel stared at Elena.
“Who?”
Elena looked toward Margaret.
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who was trying to hurt my daughter?”
Elena’s voice was barely audible.
“Your father.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“Elena…”
“Your father wanted Ivy removed from the trust.”
“Why?”
“Because your father had another family arrangement.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What arrangement?”
“Your father had promised part of the company to a foreign investor.”
Margaret interrupted.
“That is not what happened.”
Elena turned.
“You know it is.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Stop.”
Both women went silent.
“Tell me the truth.”
Elena took a breath.
“Your father had been using Ivy’s inheritance as collateral.”
Daniel felt sick.
“He could have lost everything.”
“Yes.”
“And Elena found out.”
“Yes.”
“So what did Margaret do?”
Elena looked at her.
“She threatened to expose me.”
Margaret laughed.
“I threatened to expose everyone.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“What was the threat?”
Margaret finally spoke.
“Elena was preparing to go to the authorities.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Were you?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because Margaret knew where you lived.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“And?”
“She said she would make it look like you had committed financial crimes.”
A long silence.
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“So you were both protecting yourselves.”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“I was protecting you.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Margaret looked at him.
“For eighteen years, I believed that if I controlled the trust, I could keep the family together.”
“You separated us.”
“I kept Ivy safe.”
“You manipulated her.”
Margaret looked at Ivy.
The girl hid behind Claire.
For the first time, Margaret looked genuinely hurt.
“I never wanted her afraid of me.”
Ivy whispered:
“You told me Claire would steal Daddy.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“I was trying to prepare you.”
“For what?”
“For the day she left.”
Claire took Ivy’s hand.
“I’m not leaving.”
Margaret looked at the baby bump.
“That child changes everything.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“What are you afraid of?”
Margaret finally answered.
“The trust.”
She took a long breath.
“When the baby is born, the trustees release the second portion.”
“And?”
“Your mother is no longer sole beneficiary.”
Daniel stared.
“Wait.”
Elena interrupted.
“That’s not the whole story.”
Margaret looked at her.
Elena continued.
“The trust doesn’t just divide money.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What else?”
“Control of the Voss foundation.”
“The foundation?”
“Yes.”
The foundation managed schools, hospitals, charities, land.
It was worth more than the family account.
Margaret had controlled it for years.
But the birth of Daniel’s second child would transfer voting control.
“To the children,” Elena said.
Daniel finally understood.
Margaret would lose control of everything.
“She needed Claire gone before the baby was born.”
Elena nodded.
“Exactly.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“And the fountain?”
Margaret remained silent.
Daniel answered for her.
“She needed a public incident.”
“So everyone would believe I was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“She would use the trust’s guardianship clause.”
Elena nodded.
“Once Claire was declared unfit, Margaret could control both children’s interests.”
Ivy looked confused.
“Why does Grandma want the money?”
Daniel knelt.
“She wanted control.”
Ivy thought for a moment.
“More than me?”
Margaret’s face crumpled.
“No.”
Ivy stared at her.
“But you made me stand by the fountain.”
“I thought I could scare Claire away.”
“You pushed me.”
“I didn’t mean for you to fall.”
“You still pushed me.”
Margaret couldn’t answer.
Victor stepped forward.
“There’s one final recording.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What recording?”
Victor held up the drive.
“The night of the fountain.”
He connected it to the television.
The screen showed Margaret talking to Ivy.
Daniel watched.
Margaret pointed toward the fountain.
“Stand there.”
Ivy’s younger voice asked:
“Why?”
“Because Claire needs to understand you don’t want her here.”
Then Margaret touched Ivy’s shoulder.
“Just one step.”
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You almost killed my daughter.”
Margaret whispered:
“I didn’t.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You did.”
Then a knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
It was the police.
Victor had called them before coming to the mill.
The officers entered.
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“You’re really doing this?”
Daniel’s face was unreadable.
“You did this to yourself.”
The officers approached her.
But before she was taken away, Margaret looked directly at Claire.
“Ask Elena what really happened after the crash.”
Claire frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Margaret smiled.
“There was one person she never told you about.”
Then the police led her outside.
Daniel turned to Elena.
“Who?”
Elena didn’t answer.
