Chapter 2 - The RecordingDaniel Cross entered the mansion without removing his coat.

Mark hadn't seen him since Eleanor's funeral.

"What are you doing here?"

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Mark.

"I was told I needed to deliver something tonight."

Victoria's face went white.

Mark immediately noticed.

"You know her?"

Daniel didn't answer.

One of the officers approached Mark.

"We received a report concerning a disturbance and possible child endangerment."

Mark nodded.

"That's why I called."

Victoria stepped forward.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

Lily hid behind Mark's leg.

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"She was never hurt."

Mark pointed toward the broken music box.

"You destroyed her mother's heirloom."

"It was an accident."

"Then explain why you told her she didn't belong here."

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel quietly placed the black briefcase on the library table.

Mark stared at it.

"What is that?"

"Something Eleanor instructed me never to open unless you and Lily were together."

Mark's face drained of color.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?"

Daniel looked at the police.

"Because Eleanor's instructions were very specific."

He turned to Lily.

"She said, 'When my daughter is old enough to understand fear, give this to her father.'"

Mark swallowed.

Lily was only eight.

"She's not old enough."

Daniel shook his head.

"Eleanor didn't specify an age."

He inserted a small key.

The lock clicked.

Inside was an envelope.

A flash drive.

A photograph.

And a second key.

Mark picked up the envelope.

His hands trembled.

He recognized Eleanor's handwriting.

"Mark."

Just one word.

His chest tightened.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

If Victoria is ever given control over Lily's trust, you must immediately assume the trust has already been compromised.

Mark looked at Victoria.

She had gone completely still.

"You knew about this."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know what she's talking about."

Daniel replied calmly.

"Eleanor anticipated that response."

He picked up the flash drive.

"There's video on this."

One of the officers connected it to the library computer.

The screen came alive.

A date appeared.

Three months earlier.

Victoria entered the same library.

She was alone.

She sat behind Mark's desk.

Then another person entered.

A man.

Mark recognized him.

His financial adviser.

Richard Vale.

Richard handed Victoria a folder.

Their voices were faint but audible.

"You need Mark's signature."

"I told you I can get it."

"And the girl?"

Victoria leaned back.

"She'll be out of the picture."

Mark's fists clenched.

Lily looked at him.

"What does 'out of the picture' mean?"

Mark didn't answer.

The recording continued.

Richard lowered his voice.

"Her trust only activates fully when she turns eighteen."

"I know."

"Then you have to control the guardian."

Victoria smiled.

"And I will."

The video stopped.

Everyone in the room stared at the screen.

Mark turned toward Victoria.

"What did you do?"

Victoria's expression changed.

"You think that's the whole story?"

Daniel looked surprised.

"What do you mean?"

Victoria pointed toward the broken music box.

"Ask him why Eleanor hid the key."

Mark's eyes moved to the shattered pieces.

"What key?"

Victoria laughed.

"The one she thought would save Lily."

Mark immediately crouched beside the wreckage.

He searched through the broken wooden frame.

Nothing.

Then Lily quietly spoke.

"Daddy?"

He turned.

"I know where Mommy kept it."

The room went silent.

"Where?"

Lily pointed toward the portrait above the fireplace.

"In Mommy's painting."

Mark looked up.

The portrait had hung there for eight years.

His late wife's eyes seemed to be watching him.

He pulled the frame down.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside was a brass key.

Daniel stepped closer.

"That's it."

Mark stared.

"What does it open?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"The old vault beneath the east wing."

Victoria whispered:

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

She was trembling.

And for the first time, Mark realized something terrifying.

Victoria wasn't afraid of the police.

She was afraid of that vault.
