Chapter 15 - The Last DoorSmoke filled the mansion.

Mark carried Lily down the stairs.

Daniel shouted directions.

"East corridor!"

Eleanor followed.

Maria ran toward the emergency panel.

The fire wasn't spreading naturally.

Someone had started it deliberately.

Victoria.

She wanted the documents destroyed.

Mark reached the vault.

The door was open.

Inside, the original trust was gone.

Only ashes remained in the fireplace.

Mark froze.

Then Lily pointed.

"Daddy."

A small metal box sat beneath the desk.

"It wasn't burned."

Mark opened it.

Inside was a second copy.

And a flash drive.

Daniel examined the file.

"This has everything."

"Everything?"

"Bank transfers. forged signatures. surveillance footage. recordings."

Mark looked at Lily.

"For once, your mother planned ahead."

Eleanor nodded.

"I knew she would find the backup."

A police officer rushed in.

"She has left the property."

"Where?"

"The old train station."

Mark immediately understood.

Victoria had purchased a ticket weeks earlier.

She had planned an escape route.

Mark drove there with the police.

Eleanor stayed with Lily.

At the station, Victoria stood on an empty platform.

She held the original trust in one hand.

A suitcase in the other.

Mark approached.

"It's over."

Victoria laughed.

"You've said that before."

Police officers surrounded her.

She held up the documents.

"Come any closer and these disappear."

Mark stopped.

"What do you want?"

"My settlement."

"You were willing to destroy my daughter's life for money."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"You think it was only about money?"

Mark said nothing.

Victoria looked toward Lily, who stood behind Eleanor.

"I loved this family."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

Victoria stared at her.

"You don't know anything."

"I know what you said."

"What did I say?"

"You told Daddy nobody would believe me."

Victoria's face collapsed.

The police moved forward.

Victoria dropped the documents.

She suddenly ran.

An officer caught her.

The papers scattered.

One landed at Mark's feet.

He picked it up.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not Victoria's.

Not Thomas's.

Not William's.

Clara's.

Mark turned toward Eleanor.

She understood immediately.

"Mother."

Clara had disappeared.

Again.

The police arrested Victoria and Thomas.

Richard was found hours later hiding outside the city.

Daniel surrendered every document he had kept hidden.

And for the first time, the mansion became quiet.

Weeks later, Lily's trust was placed under independent control.

The estate remained hers.

The criminal investigation continued.

But one mystery remained.

Clara.

Mark and Eleanor searched every property connected to the family.

Nothing.

Until one morning, Lily found an envelope beneath the music box.

The repaired music box.

She handed it to her father.

"For you."

Mark opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Clara stood beside a much younger Eleanor.

On the back was a handwritten message.

YOU FOUND THE TRUTH I WANTED YOU TO FIND.

Mark turned the photograph over.

There was another line.

BUT YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHERE I HID THE LAST ACCOUNT.

Eleanor stared at it.

"What last account?"

Mark didn't know.

Then the music box began playing.

A melody Eleanor hadn't heard since childhood.

She slowly looked inside.

Hidden beneath the repaired mechanism was a tiny compartment.

Inside was a bank card.

And a note.

ACCOUNT HOLDER: LILY HALE

Mark frowned.

"She was eight when this was opened."

Daniel examined the card.

"It's not a normal account."

"What's in it?"

He checked.

Then his face went completely pale.

Mark stepped closer.

"Daniel?"

Daniel looked at Lily.

"The account contains a transfer made yesterday."

"How much?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Mark checked the screen himself.

The balance read:

$87,400,000.00

Below it was a transfer instruction.

TO BE RELEASED WHEN LILY TURNS EIGHTEEN.

And beneath that was one final name.

The sender.

WILLIAM HALE.

Mark looked toward the window.

Far beyond the estate, a black sedan was parked on the road.

It had no license plate.

The passenger door opened.

An elderly man stepped out.

He lifted his hand.

Mark couldn't see his face clearly.

But he knew that posture.

He knew that walk.

William was supposed to be in prison.

Yet the man standing outside was smiling.

And this time, he wasn't looking at Mark.

He was looking directly at Lily.

The little girl stepped toward the window.

"Is that Grandpa?"

Mark pulled her away.

"Stay here."

Eleanor's face turned white.

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Every phone in the house rang at once.

One message appeared on every screen.

THE TRUST WAS NEVER THE REAL PRIZE.

Then another.

LILY WAS.

And somewhere upstairs, a door slowly opened.

There was nobody there.

Except for a small envelope placed neatly on the floor.

Mark picked it up.

May you like

On the front were four words.

CHAPTER TWO BEGINS TONIGHT.
