Chapter 14 - The Woman in the AtticAn old woman stepped from the darkness.

Lily whispered:
"Grandma?"
Mark stared.
Eleanor began crying.
"Mother."
The woman looked at Eleanor.
"You ruined everything."
Mark stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
Eleanor's mother answered:
"Clara Cross."
Daniel froze.
"Cross?"
Mark turned toward him.
"You knew?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Clara smiled.
"You all thought Eleanor's family was gone."
She looked at Lily.
"But I survived."
Mark's mind raced.
"Why hide for years?"
"Because your father wanted me dead."
She pointed toward the documents.
"Everything you found tonight came from one lie."
"What lie?"
Clara looked at Eleanor.
"That Eleanor was the innocent one."
Mark turned toward his wife.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"She's right."
Silence.
Mark couldn't speak.
Eleanor explained.
Her mother had been working with William decades earlier.
They had built a financial network together.
Eleanor discovered it.
She tried to destroy it.
But when she learned Lily's trust contained assets they could exploit, she created a secret counter-plan.
She used Victoria.
She used Thomas.
She used Daniel.
She used everyone.
Mark stared.
"You manipulated them."
"Yes."
"Even Victoria?"
"Victoria believed she was controlling me."
Eleanor's voice cracked.
"She wasn't."
Clara stepped closer.
"My daughter wanted to expose the entire family."
"Why?"
"Because she realized William would destroy Lily."
Mark looked at the trust.
"Then why did you disappear?"
Eleanor looked at Lily.
"Because someone had to make them believe I was dead."
Mark's eyes filled with anger.
"You let me bury an empty coffin."
"I thought I was protecting you."
"You let our daughter believe she lost her mother."
"I had no choice."
"You always had a choice."
Eleanor lowered her head.
Then Clara revealed the final truth.
"Victoria did not create the forged trust."
Mark looked at her.
"Who did?"
"Me."
Daniel staggered backward.
"Why?"
Clara laughed.
"Because if Lily inherited everything, the family would destroy her."
Mark shook his head.
"You don't protect a child by turning her entire life into a battlefield."
Clara's face hardened.
"You'll understand soon."
She opened a small metal case.
Inside was a final document.
The original trust.
Not Victoria's amendment.
Not Daniel's.
The true version.
Mark read it.
His eyes widened.
Lily wasn't simply the beneficiary.
She was the legal owner of the estate.
Immediately.
The trust had activated the moment Eleanor's death was registered.
But there was another clause.
A hidden one.
"If the guardian is found to have endangered the beneficiary, all assets are transferred to an independent foundation."
Mark looked at Lily.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel whispered:
"It means no one gets her money."
Clara smiled.
"Exactly."
The mansion alarm suddenly activated.
A fire began in the west wing.
Smoke spread rapidly.
Mark grabbed Lily.
Eleanor ran toward the stairs.
"Where's Victoria?"
The police searched.
She was gone.
Again.
Then Mark saw a note on the floor.
Only five words.
YOU SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN ME.
He looked up.
A window was open.
Victoria had escaped.
But this time she hadn't fled alone.
May you like
She had taken Lily's original trust documents.
And she had one hour before they were destroyed.
