Chapter 20 - The Last MemoryNobody moved.

The baby looked at Alexander.

Then at the stranger.

The strange man smiled.

“You wanted the truth.”

Alexander raised the gun.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Adrian Vale.”

Alexander's face hardened.

“Another Vale.”

“Yes.”

“Brother?”

“No.”

“Father?”

“No.”

Adrian smiled.

“Original.”

The word echoed through Room Seven.

Alexander stared.

“What original?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“The first human memory copied into Echo.”

Mia looked horrified.

“No.”

Adrian laughed.

“You remember me.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

“You do.”

He touched her forehead.

“You helped create me.”

Mia's eyes widened.

Fragments of memory flooded back.

A laboratory.

A man screaming.

Richard.

Evelyn.

Elena.

The first Echo core.

And a child.

A child whose memories were copied before he was born.

Alexander whispered:

“You're the source.”

Adrian nodded.

“All of you came from me.”

The room went silent.

“The replacements.”

“Yes.”

“The doubles.”

“Yes.”

“The implanted memories.”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Alexander.

“You are the most successful one.”

Alexander lowered the gun slightly.

“Why?”

“Because you developed something the others didn't.”

“What?”

“Free will.”

Adrian smiled.

“That's why your mother feared you.”

Alexander thought of Evelyn.

His childhood.

His fake memories.

His wife.

His son.

“What does the baby have to do with you?”

Adrian looked at the child.

“He carries the original genetic key.”

“So you want him.”

“I need him.”

Alexander stepped between them.

“You're not taking him.”

Adrian smiled.

“I expected that.”

The estate exploded.

Windows shattered.

Gunfire filled the halls.

The Architects stormed inside.

Evelyn appeared at the basement entrance.

For the first time, she and Alexander stood on the same side.

She fired.

“Go!”

Alexander grabbed Eva's hand.

Mia ran behind them.

Adrian remained in the center of Room Seven.

The baby began to cry.

Every light in the mansion turned black.

Then the world outside went silent.

Alexander looked at Eva.

“What happened?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Mia looked toward the baby.

“He activated it.”

“Activated what?”

“The final memory.”

Alexander stared.

Every person in the mansion suddenly stopped.

The soldiers.

The guards.

The Architects.

Evelyn.

Everyone.

Their eyes closed.

Then one by one, they opened.

But their faces had changed.

They looked peaceful.

Free.

Their implanted memories were gone.

Adrian staggered.

“No.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You wanted the original key.”

Adrian whispered:

“The child.”

Alexander smiled.

“You forgot one thing.”

“What?”

“Memories aren't power.”

Adrian stared.

Alexander continued:

“They are choices.”

He stepped forward.

“And people get to choose who they are.”

The Echo system began collapsing.

Adrian screamed.

His body flickered.

For the first time, Alexander saw what he truly was.

Not a man.

Not a clone.

A memory.

A face made of stolen lives.

Adrian disappeared.

The mirrors shattered.

One by one.

Alexander fell to his knees.

Eva rushed to him.

He looked at her.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded through tears.

“Yes.”

He looked at the baby.

The child was sleeping peacefully.

Mia sat against the wall.

Evelyn lowered her gun.

She stared at Alexander.

“It's over.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What?”

He looked at the broken mirror.

One piece remained.

In it, he could see himself.

But behind him stood Richard.

Alexander turned.

Nobody was there.

He looked back at the mirror.

Richard smiled.

A final message appeared on the glass.

YOU SAVED THEM.

Then another.

BUT YOU DIDN'T SAVE YOURSELF.

Alexander's blood ran cold.

Eva looked at the mirror.

“What does that mean?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Because beneath the message, another sentence appeared.

MEMORY 49 IS AWAKE.

The baby opened his eyes.

Black.

Completely black.

He looked directly at Alexander.

And in a voice far too old for a newborn, he whispered:

“Dad.”

Alexander froze.

The mirror cracked again.

From somewhere beneath the house came the sound of a door unlocking.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Alexander slowly looked toward the basement.

Room Eight had never existed.

At least, that was what everyone had told him.

But now a staircase was appearing behind the broken wall.

Descending into darkness.

Mia stood up.

Her face had gone pale.

She whispered the final words Alexander never wanted to hear:

“Your father lied.”

Alexander stared at the staircase.

“About what?”

Mia looked at the baby.

“Room Seven wasn't the last room.”

She swallowed.

“There are eight.”

And from deep beneath the mansion…

someone knocked.

Three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Then a man's voice rose from the darkness.

Alexander's own voice.

“Don't open the door.”

The lights went out.

May you like

And this time…

something on the other side laughed.
