Chapter 19 - HomeThe Vale estate looked different.

The rain had stopped.

The gates were open.

No guards.

No cameras.

No lights.

Alexander walked through the front doors.

Eva carried the baby.

Mia followed.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Alexander looked toward the staircase.

The old photograph was still there.

The one showing his father.

He picked it up.

The date had changed.

August 25, 2026.

Tomorrow.

Again.

Eva stared.

“It's happening again.”

Alexander looked closer.

The photograph no longer showed him.

It showed Mia.

Standing inside Room Seven.

Holding the baby.

And behind them stood Richard Vale.

Alexander's heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

Mia whispered:

“He's not predicting the future.”

“What?”

“He's controlling it.”

Alexander looked toward the basement.

They descended.

Room Seven was exactly as they had left it.

Except the walls were covered with mirrors.

Hundreds of them.

Each reflected a different Alexander.

Child.

Teenager.

Adult.

Old.

Dead.

Married.

Alone.

Some were crying.

Some were smiling.

One was holding a baby.

One was holding a gun.

One was lying on a hospital bed.

Alexander stared.

Eva whispered:

“Which one is real?”

A voice answered.

“All of them.”

Richard.

The mirrors flickered.

His face appeared in every reflection.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Show yourself.”

Richard's face smiled.

“My son.”

Alexander clenched his fists.

“Why did you do this?”

“Because I knew you would destroy Echo.”

“You wanted me to.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To free humanity.”

Alexander froze.

Richard continued.

“Echo was never meant to control minds.”

“Then what?”

“A prison.”

“For whom?”

The mirrors changed.

They showed a group of scientists.

Politicians.

Military officers.

People Alexander had never seen.

Then one image appeared.

A symbol.

A black circle with three lines through it.

Alexander recognized it from the documents.

“The Architects.”

Richard smiled.

“The people who funded everything.”

“Who are they?”

“My greatest mistake.”

The room doors locked.

Mia looked around.

Richard's voice continued:

“You destroyed Echo.”

“Yes.”

“But you missed the backup.”

Alexander looked at the baby.

“No.”

“The backup requires a living key.”

Alexander stepped closer to the central mirror.

“And that's my son.”

Richard nodded.

“You finally understand.”

Alexander stared at his father.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Richard's expression changed.

“The Architects come.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Alexander looked at the ceiling.

A low mechanical sound began outside.

Helicopters.

Dozens.

Searchlights flooded the estate.

Eva tightened her grip on the baby.

Mia whispered:

“They found us.”

Alexander looked at the mirrors.

Every version of himself disappeared.

Only one remained.

The original.

It stared directly at him.

And then it spoke.

Not Richard.

Not Alexander.

A stranger.

“Hello, Alexander.”

The mirror cracked.

A man stepped through.

He wore a black suit.

Silver hair.

Cold eyes.

He looked exactly like Alexander.

Except older.

Much older.

He smiled.

“I am your first memory.”

Alexander raised his weapon.

The stranger laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He pointed toward Eva.

“She is carrying the final key.”

Eva froze.

“I’m not pregnant.”

The stranger smiled.

“You were.”

Eva went pale.

“What?”

The stranger looked at the baby.

“That child isn't yours.”

Alexander felt his heart stop.

The man whispered:

“He's mine.”

And the baby opened its eyes.

May you like

Gray.

Then black.
