She seemed to know every hallway.
“Left!”
Alexander turned.
“Where are we going?”
“The core.”
“That's exactly where my mother wants us.”
Mia stopped.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“That's where we destroy her.”
They reached a circular chamber.
A massive machine occupied the center.
Cables ran from it into the walls.
Hundreds of monitors surrounded it.
Each displayed a name.
Millions of names.
Alexander recognized some.
People in governments.
Military leaders.
Celebrities.
Corporations.
The machine hummed.
Mia stepped closer.
“This is Echo.”
Alexander stared.
“It's enormous.”
“It always was.”
Eva looked at the monitors.
Her own name appeared.

Then another.
EVA VOSS
Then another.

Alexander looked toward her.
“What happens if we destroy it?”
“Everyone loses implanted memories.”
“And if we don't?”
Mia stared at the baby.
“The world becomes programmable.”
Alexander looked at Eva.
She was crying.
“Do it.”
“What?”
“Destroy it.”
Alexander shook his head.
“If we destroy this, innocent people could lose memories too.”
Mia nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then we need another way.”
Mia smiled.
“That's why you were created.”
Alexander stared.
“Me?”
“You are incompatible with Echo.”
“Why?”
“Your mind contains no original sequence.”
“You mean I'm immune?”
“Yes.”
Mia touched his forehead.
“You can shut it down without being overwritten.”
Alexander understood.
He approached the core.
A biometric scanner appeared.
IDENTITY REQUIRED
He placed his hand against it.
The system rejected him.
NO MATCH
He tried again.
Rejected.
Then the baby began crying.
The machine responded.
A second scanner opened.
CHILD KEY DETECTED
Alexander held the baby closer.
“No.”
Evelyn's voice echoed from the chamber entrance.
“You see?”
She stood there.
Blood on her sleeve.
Still holding the gun.
“You cannot stop it.”
Alexander stared.
“Mom.”
She looked exhausted.
“I didn't want this.”
“You built it.”
“I built it because your father failed.”
“You destroyed his life.”
“I saved his legacy.”
“You killed him.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Your father begged me to stop.”
Alexander froze.
Evelyn whispered:
“He knew what Echo could do.”
“Then why continue?”
“Because people are already using it.”
She looked toward the machine.
“If I destroy it now, thousands die.”
Alexander turned toward the monitors.
“Then what is the answer?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You.”
“What?”
“You were designed to become the human firewall.”
Alexander stared.
His entire life flashed before him.
The fake childhood.
The fabricated memories.
The marriage.
The pain.
Every lie had been engineered toward one goal.
To create a person who could resist Echo.
Mia whispered:
“Your father loved you.”
Alexander looked at the machine.
A system prompt appeared.
FIREWALL SEQUENCE READY
He understood.
He had one choice.
Become the prison.
Or destroy the prison.
Alexander stepped forward.
“I'll do it.”
Eva grabbed his hand.

He kissed her forehead.

The machine screamed.
