Chapter 3 - The Dead Man's VoiceI ran.

Not because I understood.

Because something inside me recognized that voice.

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Guests crawled beneath tables.

Security officers shouted.

Someone screamed for the police.

I followed the voice through a service corridor.

The door slammed behind me.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

I ran faster.

At the end of the corridor, a man stood beneath a flickering emergency light.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Black coat.

Half his face hidden in shadow.

He stepped forward.

I stopped breathing.

"Uncle Adrian?"

He smiled.

"Hello, Caroline."

I couldn't move.

"You died."

"So did you."

He reached toward me.

I stepped back.

"Don't."

His expression changed.

"I deserved that."

"You were buried."

"Yes."

"Your coffin was opened."

"An empty coffin."

My mind struggled to process it.

"You faked your death."

"I had to."

"Why?"

He looked toward the corridor.

"Because your father discovered what your grandfather had been hiding."

"What?"

Adrian lowered his voice.

"The Mercer fortune wasn't built legally."

That wasn't exactly shocking.

Rich families had secrets.

But he continued.

"It was built on stolen identities."

I stared at him.

"What does that have to do with me?"

"Everything."

He told me the Mercer family had controlled a private financial network that moved money through charities, construction companies, hospitals, and offshore accounts.

People who threatened the network disappeared.

Records were altered.

Deaths were manufactured.

The fire had not been random.

It had been designed to erase evidence.

"And me?"

Adrian looked away.

"You found something."

"What?"

"A ledger."

I remembered.

A red notebook.

I had found it in my father's study when I was sixteen.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

I had shown Juliette.

She had told me to forget it.

I hadn't.

The next night, the house burned.

I whispered:

"Juliette knew."

Adrian nodded.

"She knew enough."

"Then why is she marrying Daniel?"

His expression hardened.

"Because Daniel isn't marrying her."

"What?"

"He's marrying the Mercer fortune."

Before I could ask another question, a gunshot tore through the wall.

Adrian grabbed me.

"Down!"

We dropped behind a concrete pillar.

Another bullet struck the metal door.

Adrian pulled a small pistol from his coat.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Caroline."

"I'm done being left behind."

He stared at me.

For the first time, I saw something like pride in his eyes.

Then he smiled.

"Your mother said the same thing."

He disappeared into the darkness.

I heard two shots.

Then silence.

I waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Then someone touched my shoulder.

I spun around.

Juliette stood behind me.

Her wedding dress was torn.

Her mascara streaked.

She was crying.

But her hands were clean.

No blood.

No weapon.

She whispered:

"Caroline, Adrian is lying to you."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because he's the reason you almost died."

She reached into her dress.

Pulled out a photograph.

It showed Adrian standing beside the burning Mercer mansion.

But there was something else.

A second figure beside him.

My father.

Juliette whispered:

"They started the fire together."

Then she turned the photograph over.

There was another handwritten sentence.

BUT CAROLINE WAS NEVER THE TARGET.
