Chapter 11 - What I Remembered From the FireThe memory returned in pieces.

Smoke.
Heat.
My mother's scream.
A red notebook.
My bedroom.
A loose floorboard.
And someone entering through the window.
I remembered the man's face.
I remembered him whispering:
"I'm sorry."
Then the explosion.
I looked at my mother.
"Gabriel."
She shook her head.
"No."
"Then who?"
My grandfather.
He had been inside the house.
He had started the fire himself.
But he hadn't intended to kill me.
He wanted to destroy the ledger.
I had hidden the final page before the fire.
Where?
My childhood music box.
It had survived.
I remembered the tiny metal ballerina.
I remembered hiding the page beneath it.
We escaped the vault.
But Daniel caught Marcus.
Juliette caught my mother.
I ran.
The mansion was surrounded.
I reached my old bedroom.
The music box was still there.
I opened it.
Inside was the final page.
And beneath it was a second document.
A birth certificate.
Caroline Mercer.
Father: Gabriel Vale.
Mother: Evelyn Mercer.
The truth had been hidden for sixteen years.
Then I noticed another name on the final page.
Not my grandfather.
Not my father.
Not Juliette.
Someone else.
Someone who had benefited from every death.
Someone who had manipulated the Mercer family for decades.
A name I recognized from every news report about my family's wealth.
Victor Hale.
The family's attorney.
The man who had represented the Mercers for thirty years.
The man who had signed my death certificate.
The man who had handled my inheritance.
The man who had attended my funeral.
And the man standing outside my bedroom door.
He smiled.
"Hello, Caroline."
I backed away.
Victor closed the door.
"You've caused me a great deal of trouble."
"You're the one behind everything."
He shook his head.
"No."
He smiled.
"I'm the one who made everything possible."
Then he revealed the final secret.
My grandfather hadn't created the network.
May you like
Victor had.
And the Mercers had only been his puppets.
