Chapter 13 - The Box My Mother HidWe returned after the fire.

The mansion was destroyed.
But the metal box survived.
Inside was a letter.
From my mother.
It explained everything.
She had known Victor would eventually come for her.
She had prepared a final trap.
The evidence wasn't stored in the vault.
It was distributed.
Three copies.
Three people.
One was me.
One was Marcus.
The third was Juliette.
Juliette looked at me.
"I didn't know."
"Why didn't Mom tell you?"
"Because she didn't trust me."
That hurt.
But I understood.
My mother had chosen the three people most likely to survive.
Then came the final page.
It contained a list of bank accounts.
But the account numbers weren't important.
The names were.
Every person Victor had paid.
Judges.
Police commanders.
Doctors.
Executives.
And one name shocked me.
Daniel Whitmore.
He had been Victor's son.
Daniel hadn't fallen in love with Juliette.
He had been assigned to marry her.
He had been manipulating her from the beginning.
But Daniel had disappeared.
We found him at the old cemetery.
He was sitting beside my father's grave.
I pointed a gun at him.
"Why?"
He looked at me.
"Because Victor killed my mother."
I lowered the weapon slightly.
"He used my father to cover it."
Daniel admitted he had eventually turned against Victor.
But he had waited too long.
Juliette joined us.
For the first time, the three of us stood together.
Caroline.
Juliette.
Daniel.
Three people connected by the same conspiracy.
Then Marcus arrived.
His face was pale.
"Victor survived."
I froze.
"Impossible."
"He escaped the fire."
"Where is he?"
Marcus handed me a photograph.
Victor was standing outside an airport.
Beside him was a woman.
My mother.
I looked at the photograph.
My mother was crying.
Victor was holding a gun.
And behind them was an airplane.
Marcus said:
"They're leaving the country tonight."
I stared at the photograph.
Then I noticed something.
My mother was holding something.
A small red notebook.
The original ledger.
Victor hadn't escaped with the evidence.
My mother had taken it.
She was leaving with the only thing that could destroy him.
May you like
I turned toward the airport.
"We're going."
