Chapter 4 - THE NAME ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATEJosiah attacked before Adrian could take another step.

The two brothers crashed into the marble wall.

Security rushed in.

Adrian fought like a man who had spent years preparing for this exact moment.

Josiah finally slammed him onto the floor.

“You killed Elena.”

Adrian spat blood.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Adrian laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He looked toward Mia.

“She was never switched.”

Josiah froze.

Willow's eyes widened.

Adrian continued.

“Mia is your biological daughter.”

The room went silent.

“But Elena discovered something else.”

Josiah tightened his grip.

“What?”

Adrian looked at Willow.

“Tell her.”

Willow frowned.

“Tell her what?”

Adrian's expression softened.

“Mia isn't the only child connected to that night.”

Josiah slowly released him.

“Where is the other child?”

Adrian smiled.

“That is the question your wife died trying to answer.”

Before anyone could move, Adrian pulled a small device from his pocket.

A recording began.

Elena's voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, something went wrong.”

Josiah's heart nearly stopped.

“Mia is safe.”

A pause.

“For now.”

Josiah closed his eyes.

Elena continued.

“There are people inside the organization who know about the Black Ledger.”

Adrian's face changed.

Even he looked surprised.

Willow frowned.

“What is the Black Ledger?”

Adrian whispered:

“The list.”

“What list?”

“Every politician. Every judge. Every police commander. Every businessman who ever paid Josiah.”

Josiah stared at him.

“That's impossible.”

Adrian smiled bitterly.

“Your empire isn't built on fear.”

He looked around the room.

“It's built on secrets.”

Elena's recording continued.

“Someone wants the ledger.”

A man's voice suddenly entered the recording.

Unknown.

Deep.

Cold.

“You should have given it to me, Elena.”

Josiah's blood froze.

The recording continued.

Elena screamed.

Then static.

Mia covered her ears.

“No!”

Willow hugged her.

The recording ended.

Josiah stared at Adrian.

“Where is it?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because they think I know.”

Josiah paused.

“Who?”

Adrian looked at Caleb's empty doorway.

“Your security chief.”

Josiah's expression hardened.

“Caleb?”

Adrian nodded.

“He's been working for them for years.”

Willow looked at Mia.

The little girl had become strangely quiet.

“What is it?” Willow asked.

Mia slowly reached into her dress pocket.

She pulled out a small silver key.

Josiah stared.

“Where did you get that?”

“Mommy gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

Josiah knelt.

“You've had this all these years?”

Mia nodded.

“She said not to give it to Daddy until the bad man came.”

Josiah stared at the key.

“What bad man?”

Mia looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“Uncle Caleb.”

A gunshot shattered the window.

Glass exploded inward.

Josiah grabbed Mia.

Security opened fire toward the outside.

Willow pulled the little girl behind a stone pillar.

A black vehicle sped away into the rain.

One of the guards shouted:

“Sir! Caleb escaped!”

Josiah stared at the broken window.

Adrian slowly stood.

“He knows the key exists.”

Josiah clenched his fist.

“Then we find out what it opens.”

Hours later, they arrived at an abandoned church on the edge of the city.

The key fit an old wooden box hidden beneath the altar.

Inside was a single folder.

Josiah opened it.

His expression changed instantly.

Willow looked over his shoulder.

A birth certificate.

Mia's name.

Josiah's name.

Elena's name.

Everything was normal.

Except for one detail.

The signature of the attending doctor.

It belonged to a man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

Adrian looked at the page.

“No.”

Josiah stared at him.

“What?”

Adrian pointed.

“This doctor wasn't dead.”

“Then where is he?”

Adrian slowly looked at Willow.

“Your mother knows.”

Willow's face went pale.

“My mother?”

Adrian nodded.

“She didn't disappear.”

“She vanished.”

“No.”

He leaned closer.

“She was hiding.”

Willow stepped backward.

“From whom?”

Adrian's answer was almost a whisper.

“From your father.”

Willow stopped breathing.

Because she had been told her father died before she was born.

But Adrian had just opened a door to a truth she had spent twenty-four years believing was impossible.

And on the back of Mia's birth certificate was one handwritten line:

THE WAITRESS IS THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER.
