Chapter 10 - THE DAUGHTER WHO ENDED THE WARCaleb turned and ran.

Josiah handed Elena to Adrian.

“Stay with her.”

Then he disappeared into the rain.

Willow followed.

She had stopped being the frightened waitress a long time ago.

Now she knew who she was.

She knew what had been done to her.

And she knew why Mia had been hunted.

The chase ended at an abandoned train station.

Caleb stood beneath a flickering light.

“You should have stayed in the restaurant.”

Willow stepped forward.

“You killed Elena.”

“She was already dead to the world.”

“You planned everything.”

“No.”

Caleb smiled.

“I only cleaned up Evelyn's mistakes.”

Josiah emerged from the shadows.

“Where is my mother?”

Caleb laughed.

“Gone.”

“Where?”

“Far away.”

Josiah raised his gun.

Caleb raised his own.

Neither fired.

Willow noticed something.

A small red light on Caleb's jacket.

A microphone.

Recording.

She understood.

He wanted Josiah angry.

He wanted him to kill him.

Because then every secret would die with him.

Willow whispered:

“Josiah.”

He looked at her.

“Don't.”

Caleb smiled.

“You think you've won?”

“No.”

Willow stepped forward.

“I think you're scared.”

His smile disappeared.

“You've spent years hiding behind men more powerful than you.”

She continued.

“Evelyn.”

“Adrian.”

“Josiah.”

“Your whole life is built on other people's power.”

Caleb's gun trembled.

“You don't know anything.”

Willow smiled.

“I know why you wanted the ledger.”

Caleb froze.

“You didn't want money.”

She pointed at him.

“You wanted the names erased.”

Silence.

Josiah understood.

“The Circle's members.”

Caleb stared.

“They've been blackmailing you.”

Caleb's face changed.

“You think I care about the Circle?”

Willow shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the recorder.

“I think the Circle has been recording everything.”

Caleb looked up.

“What?”

Willow reached into her pocket.

She held up her phone.

“The entire conversation is being broadcast.”

Caleb stared.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

Sirens approached.

Hundreds of them.

Caleb panicked.

He fired.

Josiah moved.

The shot missed.

Adrian tackled Caleb.

The weapon slid across the concrete.

Within seconds, Caleb was surrounded.

Police flooded the station.

For the first time in decades, Josiah's empire was collapsing.

Not because someone stronger defeated him.

Because the truth had finally escaped.

Back at the hospital, Elena survived.

Barely.

Mia refused to leave her side.

Willow sat beside the window.

Josiah approached.

“She asked about you.”

Willow looked at him.

“Why me?”

“Because she says you saved Mia.”

Willow smiled faintly.

“I didn't save her.”

She looked toward the hospital bed.

“She saved me too.”

Josiah sat beside her.

“What happens now?”

Willow laughed softly.

“That's your question?”

“My entire life disappeared in one week.”

“So did mine.”

He looked at her.

“You could leave.”

Willow shook her head.

“Mia needs someone she trusts.”

“She has me.”

“She has you.”

She smiled.

“But she also has me.”

Silence.

Then Mia entered the room.

She ran toward Willow.

Willow opened her arms.

The little girl hugged her tightly.

“Are you staying?”

Willow looked at Josiah.

Then at Mia.

“Yes.”

Mia smiled.

For the first time since anyone could remember, the eight-year-old girl looked peaceful.

Months passed.

The Circle collapsed.

Evelyn was found in another country and arrested.

The Black Ledger was turned over to federal investigators.

Dozens of corrupt officials were exposed.

Josiah dismantled most of his criminal operation.

He sold businesses.

Closed warehouses.

Cut ties.

People called him weak.

He didn't care.

Because every night, his daughter slept safely.

And Willow stayed.

Not as a waitress.

Not as a nanny.

But as the one person Mia trusted completely.

One evening, Willow found Mia drawing in the kitchen.

“What are you drawing?”

Mia turned the paper around.

It was a picture of three people.

Josiah.

Mia.

Willow.

Willow smiled.

“You forgot someone.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

She added a fourth person.

Elena.

Then a fifth.

Adrian.

Willow frowned.

“Why five?”

Mia whispered:

“Because family isn't always who you started with.”

Willow hugged her.

Then noticed something written at the bottom of the page.

A name.

PROJECT MIRROR: PHASE TWO.

Her smile disappeared.

“Mia.”

“Yes?”

“Where did you hear that?”

Mia looked confused.

“I didn't.”

“Then who wrote it?”

Mia pointed toward the hallway.

A shadow moved.

Josiah walked in.

“What happened?”

Willow handed him the drawing.

He read the words.

His face went pale.

“No.”

“What?”

Josiah turned the paper over.

On the back was another message.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG CHILD.

The lights suddenly went out.

Mia grabbed Willow's hand.

A voice whispered from the darkness.

“Round two.”

A single red light appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Dozens of them.

Like eyes opening.

And from somewhere inside the house came a woman's laughter.

Evelyn.

Impossible.

Because Evelyn was supposed to be in prison.

Willow looked at Josiah.

Josiah whispered:

“Take Mia and run.”

But before anyone could move, every door in the mansion slammed shut.

And a final message appeared across the television screen:

WELCOME BACK TO PROJECT MIRROR.

The screen went black.

Mia's fingers tightened around Willow's.

And in the darkness, a woman's voice whispered:

May you like

“Let the real game begin.”
