Chapter 2 - Ryan had always believed secrets could be measured.A lie was a sentence.

A hidden account was a number.
An affair was a message on a phone.
A secret child was something you could eventually explain.
But the darkness behind his kitchen wall wasn't something he could measure.
It swallowed the beam of his phone flashlight.
Ryan pulled the broken vent frame away and widened the opening.
The cavity wasn't part of the normal ventilation system.
It was a corridor.
A narrow passage running behind the kitchen.
The old house suddenly felt unfamiliar.
“How long has this been here?” Ryan asked.
Emily said nothing.
“Emily!”
She backed away.
Noah stood halfway down the stairs, watching.
“Dad?”
“Stay there.”
Ryan climbed through the opening.
The air smelled of damp concrete, mold, and something metallic.
He crawled forward.
His flashlight revealed scratches on the wall.
Hundreds of them.
Some were old.
Some were fresh.
Then he saw the blanket.
It was pink.
A small plastic cup sat beside it.
There was a plate.
Empty.
And carved into the wall were four words.
DON'T LET HER HEAR YOU.
Ryan stared.
His pulse hammered.
“Lily?”
A soft movement came from farther down the passage.
Ryan followed it.
The corridor opened into a small room.
He stopped.
A little girl was sitting on the floor.
She looked about six years old.
Maybe seven.
Her hair was tangled.
Her cheeks were hollow.
She wore an oversized white shirt.
Around one ankle was a red mark.
She stared at Ryan.
Her eyes widened.
Then she smiled.
Not because she was happy.
Because she recognized him.
“Daddy.”
Ryan's knees nearly gave out.
“No.”
The girl crawled toward him.
“I knew you'd come.”
Ryan couldn't speak.
She reached for his hand.
He let her take it.
Her fingers were ice cold.
“I waited.”
Ryan looked behind her.
There was a mattress.
A bucket.
A water bottle.
A small lamp connected to a wire.
Someone had built this room deliberately.
Someone had been keeping a child here.
“How long have you been here?”
The girl held up six fingers.
“Six days?”
She shook her head.
“Six years.”
Ryan felt sick.
Six years.
Impossible.
He looked at her face again.
There was something familiar in it.
Not just the eyes.
The shape of her mouth.
The small crease between her eyebrows.
He had seen those features before.
In the mirror.
Ryan backed away.
“What's your name?”
The girl looked confused.
“Lily.”
“Who told you my name?”
“You did.”
“I don't remember you.”
She frowned.
“Daddy, you promised.”
“What did I promise?”
“To come back.”
Ryan couldn't breathe.
Behind him, footsteps scraped against the floor.
Emily had entered the passage.
“Get away from her.”
The girl's face changed instantly.
Fear.
“Mommy.”
Ryan turned.
“Mommy?”
Emily stood at the entrance.
Her hands were shaking.
“Ryan, bring her upstairs.”
“You've known she's here.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Silence.
“How long, Emily?”
“Six years.”
Ryan stared.
Noah's voice came from behind them.
“Dad?”
Emily looked at Noah.
Then at Lily.
The two children stared at each other.
Lily whispered, “That's my brother.”
Noah went pale.
Ryan's blood ran cold.
“What?”
Lily smiled weakly.
“Noah.”
Noah shook his head.
“I don't know you.”
Lily's expression broke.
“You used to sing to me.”
Ryan looked at Emily.
“Noah wasn't even born six years ago.”
Emily said nothing.
“Who is she?”
Emily finally whispered something that made Ryan's entire world tilt.
“She is your daughter.”
Ryan laughed once.
A dry, disbelieving sound.
“My daughter is dead.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
Ryan remembered the hospital six years earlier.
The emergency room.
Emily crying.
The doctor telling him there had been complications.
Their baby had not survived.
He had buried a tiny white coffin.
He remembered it.
He remembered holding Emily's hand at the funeral.
He remembered standing beneath the rain.
So who was the child in the wall?
Ryan grabbed Emily's shoulders.
“You told me our daughter died.”
“I know.”
“You said she was dead.”
“I know.”
“Then explain the child.”
Emily broke down.
“I couldn't.”
“Couldn't what?”
Her lips trembled.
“Save her.”
Ryan released her.
Behind him, Lily began crying.
A loud metallic crash echoed from somewhere beneath the house.
Emily's head snapped toward the corridor.
Ryan noticed.
She wasn't surprised.
She was terrified.
“What was that?”
Emily whispered one sentence.
“The person who put her here knows you've found her.”
The lights went out.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness...
a door slammed shut.
