Chapter 14 - The police arrived in force. The property was surrounded.

Ambulances filled the road.
News helicopters circled overhead.
The hidden chambers were discovered.
The children were taken to hospitals.
For the first time in decades, the Carter house became impossible to hide.
Daniel was arrested.
Helen was arrested.
Emily was placed under investigation.
Mason stayed with Ryan until sunrise.
But the questions didn't stop.
Who was Ryan Carter?
Was he legally the same man who had grown up in the house?
Was Lily truly his daughter?
Was Mara real?
How many people had been experimented on?
And most disturbing of all...
where were the bodies?
Lily led the police to the basement.
Behind a section of stone was a tunnel.
It opened beneath the forest.
There were graves.
Dozens.
Each marked with a number.
No names.
Only dates.
Ryan stood there as investigators uncovered them.
Then Lily walked to one grave.
She stopped.
“That's Mara.”
Ryan froze.
The marker read:
SUBJECT 07.
He knelt.
“Mara.”
Lily nodded.
“I remember.”
“What happened?”
“They told me I was dying.”
Ryan waited.
“They transferred me.”
“To Lily?”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“I woke up inside her.”
Ryan looked at the girl.
“So you are Mara.”
She shook her head.
“I am Lily too.”
Ryan touched her face.
“Which one is talking now?”
Lily smiled.
“Both.”
Ryan felt tears burn his eyes.
The investigation lasted for months.
Daniel refused to cooperate.
Helen blamed Daniel.
Emily confessed.
She admitted she had discovered the experiments years earlier.
She had hidden Lily behind the wall because Daniel intended to use her for the final transfer.
Emily had believed she was protecting her.
But she had also been afraid that Lily would expose everything.
Ryan struggled to forgive her.
Noah refused to leave his father.
“I know you're Dad.”
Ryan looked at him.
“How?”
Noah smiled.
“You worry too much.”
Ryan laughed.
The boy hugged him.
That was enough.
Maybe identity wasn't hidden inside memories.
Maybe it lived in what remained after the memories were gone.
Six months later, the Carter house was demolished.
Ryan watched the walls collapse.
The kitchen disappeared.
The hidden passage vanished.
The basement was filled with concrete.
Nothing would grow there again.
Lily stood beside him.
“Is it over?”
Ryan looked at her.
“I hope.”
She frowned.
“You don't sound sure.”
“No.”
She looked toward the empty foundation.
“Because there's still one room.”
Ryan's heart sank.
“What room?”
“The room Grandpa never showed you.”
Ryan stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Lily took his hand.
“I remember now.”
She led him away from the house.
Toward the forest.
They reached the old stone well.
Ryan had seen it before.
But Lily stopped beside it.
“Under here.”
Ryan looked down.
“There's nothing.”
She shook her head.
“There's a door.”
They moved the stones.
Hidden beneath them was a metal hatch.
Ryan opened it.
A ladder descended.
At the bottom was a narrow room.
Inside sat a single chair.
A monitor.
And a video recorder.
Ryan switched it on.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
But this recording was different.
He looked younger.
Healthy.
Afraid.
“If you're watching this,” he said, “then the purge worked.”
Ryan stared.
Daniel continued:
“I failed to control memory.”
He paused.
“But I discovered something much worse.”
The screen flickered.
“Memory does not create identity.”
Ryan leaned closer.
“Identity creates memory.”
The video showed a photograph.
A newborn baby.
Ryan recognized the face.
Lily.
Then another photograph.
Noah.
Then another.
A child Ryan had never seen.
Daniel whispered:
“There was a twenty-fourth subject.”
Ryan's blood ran cold.
“The child was never in the house.”
The screen turned black.
A final message appeared.
SHE IS STILL ALIVE.
Ryan looked at Lily.
She was crying.
“Do you know who she is?”
Lily shook her head.
Then the monitor flickered back on.
A live video appeared.
A teenage girl sat in a dark room.
She looked directly into the camera.
She had Ryan's eyes.
And she whispered:
“Daddy.”
The feed ended.
Ryan couldn't move.
Lily grabbed his hand.
“That's not possible.”
Ryan stared at the dead screen.
“Apparently it is.”
Behind them, the hatch slammed shut.
Someone was standing at the top of the ladder.
May you like
A woman's voice whispered:
“Welcome back, Ryan.”
