Chapter 15 - Ryan turned.Emily stood above them.

Her face was pale.

She was holding an old key.

Lily stepped behind Ryan.

“Mommy?”

Emily shook her head.

“She's not the one you should be afraid of.”

Ryan looked toward the ladder.

“Who is?”

Emily descended slowly.

“The girl on the screen.”

Ryan's voice was quiet.

“Who is she?”

Emily reached the bottom.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Then tell me everything.”

Emily looked at Lily.

“Your memory has been restored enough.”

Lily nodded.

Emily continued.

“Twenty-three children were experiments.”

Ryan said nothing.

“The twenty-fourth was different.”

“Why?”

“She wasn't an experiment.”

Ryan frowned.

“Then what was she?”

Emily swallowed.

“She was the original.”

Ryan's blood turned cold.

“The original what?”

“Ryan.”

He stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

Emily pointed toward the recorder.

“The process Daniel developed wasn't designed to copy memories.”

Ryan remembered the old man's warning.

“It was designed to copy people.”

Emily nodded.

“But copies require a source.”

Ryan felt the room tighten around him.

“You're saying that girl is the source?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Ryan.

“You are.”

Silence.

Ryan stared at her.

“I don't understand.”

“The girl on the screen is Ryan Carter's original consciousness.”

Ryan's breathing stopped.

“What?”

“The real Ryan never died.”

Ryan backed against the wall.

“That isn't possible.”

“Your father didn't recreate you.”

“Then what did he do?”

“He split you.”

Lily whispered:

“That's why we remember each other.”

Emily nodded.

“Daniel discovered that consciousness could be divided.”

Ryan stared at the monitor.

“One part became you.”

She looked at Lily.

“One part became Mara.”

“And another?”

Emily didn't answer.

Ryan whispered:

“The girl.”

“Yes.”

Ryan felt sick.

“You divided me into three people?”

“No.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel did.”

Ryan looked at Lily.

“Then who am I?”

Emily stepped closer.

“You are the part he couldn't control.”

Ryan didn't move.

“You were built from Ryan's memories, but something unexpected happened.”

“What?”

“You developed your own identity.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“So I'm not fake.”

“No.”

“Not real.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“You are both.”

Lily squeezed Ryan's hand.

“That's why Daddy came back.”

Ryan looked at her.

“I never left.”

Lily smiled.

“I know.”

The monitor suddenly came alive.

The teenage girl appeared again.

This time, she wasn't alone.

Someone stood behind her.

Ryan's heart stopped.

The person stepped forward.

Daniel.

But not the Daniel they knew.

Younger.

Stronger.

Alive.

Ryan stared.

Daniel smiled.

“Hello, Ryan.”

Ryan felt every muscle in his body tighten.

“You were arrested.”

“That was a copy.”

“What?”

Daniel smiled.

“The man they arrested was the twenty-third.”

Ryan looked at Emily.

She was crying.

“How many Daniels are there?”

The answer came from the screen.

“Enough.”

Ryan's stomach dropped.

Daniel continued:

“You thought the experiment was about creating one immortal person.”

He shook his head.

“It was about creating a family that could never die.”

Lily stepped toward the monitor.

“What do you want?”

Daniel looked at her.

“You.”

Ryan stepped in front of her.

“Never.”

Daniel smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

He pressed something.

The monitor changed.

Hospital records appeared.

Noah.

Then Emily.

Then Ryan.

Then Lily.

Every name had a status.

Ryan stared.

Across the bottom of the screen was one final line:

TRANSFER SEQUENCE INITIATED.

Ryan looked at Lily.

“What does that mean?”

Her eyes widened.

“I can hear them.”

“Who?”

“The others.”

Ryan heard it too.

Faintly.

Twenty-three voices.

Children.

Adults.

Dead people.

Whispering from somewhere beyond the walls.

They were calling his name.

Ryan.

Ryan.

Ryan.

Then one voice spoke clearly.

His father's.

“You wanted your family back.”

Ryan turned toward the hatch.

Daniel's voice came through the speakers.

“Now you can have all of them.”

The lights went out.

Ryan pulled Lily close.

Emily screamed.

And Noah shouted from somewhere above:

“DAD!”

Ryan looked toward the ceiling.

A terrible realization hit him.

Noah hadn't called him Dad.

He had called him by the name of someone else.

Ryan.

Ryan heard footsteps above.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then the voice of his own son whispered:

“I found the first door.”

The hatch opened.

A figure descended into the darkness.

Ryan raised the only weapon he had.

His flashlight.

The beam struck the stranger's face.

Ryan froze.

It was him.

Not a copy wearing his face.

Not a memory.

Not a reconstruction.

The real Ryan Carter.

Standing there.

Alive.

Older than he should have been.

Scarred.

Tired.

And holding a photograph of a little girl.

Lily.

The original Ryan looked at him.

Then at Mara.

Then at Emily.

And finally at Noah.

He smiled sadly.

“I've been looking for my family for twenty years.”

Ryan couldn't breathe.

“Who are you?”

The man stepped forward.

“I am the reason you exist.”

Then he turned the photograph around.

On the back were four words.

THE FIRST CHILD IS STILL ALIVE.

Ryan's eyes moved to Lily.

The little girl was crying.

But she wasn't afraid.

She was remembering.

And suddenly she whispered the final truth.

“Daddy...”

She looked at the man standing before them.

“That isn't Ryan.”

Everyone froze.

The stranger's smile disappeared.

Lily pointed at him.

“He's Grandpa.”

The man laughed.

The sound echoed through the underground chamber.

Then the doors behind them slammed shut.

And for the first time, Ryan understood the truth.

The little girl had never been trapped behind the wall.

She had been protected by it.

Because the real monster...

had never been outside.

He had been waiting for them underground.

May you like

And he had been waiting for Ryan to remember.

THE END.
