Chapter 14 - The old Blackwood house stood beyond the city limits. No cameras.

No guards.

No neighbors.

Only forest.

Ethan entered through the basement.

Adrian led the way.

Amelia stayed with Lily.

Marcus covered the rear entrance.

Inside, the house was silent.

Too silent.

They moved room by room.

Then they heard a child crying.

Ethan ran toward the sound.

He opened the door.

Claire was inside.

The fake Lily.

She stood beside an elderly woman.

Ethan stopped.

The woman looked at him.

And smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

He had never seen her in his life.

Yet something about her face felt familiar.

Amelia whispered behind him.

“Margaret.”

The woman was Ethan’s mother.

The woman believed dead for fifteen years.

Margaret laughed softly.

“You finally came.”

Ethan could barely speak.

“You’re alive.”

“I had to be.”

“Why?”

“To protect Adrian.”

Adrian lowered his gun.

“Mother.”

Margaret’s expression softened.

Then hardened again.

“You ruined everything.”

Adrian looked away.

“You chose Victor.”

“I chose survival.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Where is Victor?”

Margaret smiled.

“He’s downstairs.”

Ethan found the staircase.

At the bottom was a room covered in photographs.

The twins.

Amelia.

Ethan.

His father.

Adrian.

Every year.

Every birthday.

Every move.

Victor had watched all of them.

At the center of the room stood a metal chair.

Amelia stopped.

“No.”

On the chair was Victor.

Blood covered his shirt.

He was injured.

Ethan stared.

“Who did this?”

Victor smiled.

“Your mother.”

Margaret entered behind them.

“I was never on his side.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Then why help him?”

“Because your father betrayed us both.”

Margaret revealed the final truth.

The trust had not been created to protect the children.

It had been created to imprison the family empire under one bloodline.

Ethan’s father had secretly planned to transfer the company to charity.

Victor discovered the plan.

The fire was an attempt to destroy the evidence.

But Margaret had stolen the original trust.

She had hidden it.

She had then disappeared.

Adrian spent years searching for it.

Victor spent years searching for them.

And Ethan had been used as the final piece.

Margaret turned toward Claire.

“She is not Victor’s weapon.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“She’s your daughter.”

Ethan nodded.

“I know.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to Lily.

“Claire is not your second daughter.”

Ethan’s blood froze.

Margaret continued.

“The twins died.”

Silence.

Amelia stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Margaret smiled.

“The girls you raised as Lily and Claire were both part of a medical experiment.”

Ethan stared.

“No.”

Margaret opened a file.

Inside was a genetic report.

Two children.

Both matching Ethan.

Both matching Amelia.

Both biological.

Margaret looked at him.

“Your daughters survived.”

“Then what did you mean?”

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

“One of them was altered.”

Ethan stared.

“Altered how?”

“A medical procedure done immediately after birth.”

“To change what?”

Margaret whispered:

“Her fingerprints.”

Ethan froze.

Victor began laughing.

“Now you understand.”

He revealed the final weapon.

The daughter Ethan had spent years searching for could never be identified by fingerprints.

And the other daughter had been given her records.

The entire legal system could be manipulated.

Ethan looked from one girl to the other.

Two identical faces.

Two biological daughters.

Two different histories.

Only one had the crescent mark.

He remembered Amelia’s note.

Then he saw it.

A tiny scar beneath Claire’s wrist.

The same mark his mother had described.

Ethan understood.

“Claire is the older one.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

Ethan stared at Lily.

“The bracelet.”

Victor’s face changed.

Ethan looked at the silver bracelet.

Then at Margaret.

“Who switched it?”

Margaret said nothing.

A gunshot rang out.

Margaret fell.

Ethan turned.

Victor was holding the gun.

And beside him stood Adrian.

Adrian had tears in his eyes.

He whispered:

May you like

“I’m sorry, brother.”

Then he raised his weapon toward Lily.
