Chapter 5: The House of Ashcroft

Chapter 5: The House of Ashcroft
The invitation arrived the next morning.
No stamp.
No return address.
It was lying neatly on the mansion's front steps, untouched by the night's rain.
Emily picked it up with trembling fingers.
Inside was a single ivory card.
Emily Elizabeth Hart
It's time you learned who you are.
Ashcroft Manor
7:00 P.M.
No signature.
Only the same silver crown embossed into the corner.
Detective Harris read it twice.
"It's a trap."
Anna nodded immediately.
"Without question."
Emily looked at both of them.
"But it's also the first time they've invited me instead of hiding from me."
Harris sighed.
"And that's exactly why you shouldn't go."
Emily folded the invitation shut.
"They've controlled my life since the day I was born."
"I'm done letting them decide when I get the truth."
That evening...
Three black SUVs rolled through a pair of enormous wrought-iron gates.
Ashcroft Manor emerged from the darkness.
It wasn't simply a mansion.
It was an estate built like a private kingdom.
Stone towers rose above ancient oak trees.
Dozens of security cameras watched every road.
The front doors slowly opened before Emily even reached them.
Someone had been expecting her.
Inside...
No servants greeted them.
No music played.
Only silence.
At the end of a marble hallway stood the elderly woman from the church.
Silver hair.
Black silk dress.
Diamond crown brooch.
She smiled warmly.
"Welcome home, Emily."
Emily stopped.
"I don't have a home here."
The woman's smile never faded.
"You've been here before."
Emily frowned.
"No."
"You just don't remember."
"My name is Eleanor Ashcroft."
"I founded the Ashcroft Circle."
The words echoed through the empty hall.
Detective Harris instinctively reached for his weapon.
Before he could touch it...
Eight armed security guards stepped out from hidden doorways.
Eleanor spoke calmly.
"No guns."
"No violence."
"If I wanted you dead..."
She looked toward Anna.
"...last night would've ended differently."
Anna's jaw tightened.
"You murdered Elizabeth."
Eleanor's smile disappeared.
"No."
"I protected her."
Emily stepped forward.
"My mother is alive?"
Eleanor studied her face for several seconds.
Then answered.
"Yes."
Emily's knees nearly gave way.
"Where is she?"
"I'll show you."
Eleanor led them through a long underground corridor.
At the end stood a reinforced steel door.
A biometric scanner unlocked it.
Inside...
The room looked more like a museum than a prison.
Family photographs.
Fresh flowers.
Books.
Paintings.
An old piano.
A woman sat quietly beside the window.
Her long chestnut hair had faded with age.
But her eyes...
Emily knew them instantly.
The woman slowly looked up.
The teacup slipped from her hands.
It shattered against the wooden floor.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Emily..."
Emily couldn't breathe.
"Mom?"
Elizabeth stood.
Her hands trembled.
"My little girl..."
Emily crossed the room in seconds.
The two women embraced.
Neither spoke.
Neither could.
Twenty-eight years of grief collapsed into one silent moment.
Anna turned away, quietly wiping tears from her eyes.
Even Detective Harris lowered his head.
Only Eleanor remained expressionless.
Hours later...
Emily finally found her voice.
"They told me you died."
Elizabeth nodded sadly.
"They told me you died too."
Emily stared.
"What?"
Elizabeth gently held her daughter's face.
"For twenty-eight years..."
"I believed my baby had died during childbirth."
Emily looked toward Eleanor.
"You lied to both of us."
Eleanor answered without emotion.
"I preserved something much larger than a family."
Emily's voice hardened.
"You destroyed one."
Eleanor slowly walked toward an enormous oil painting hanging above the fireplace.
It depicted generations of the Ashcroft family.
Kings of industry.
Politicians.
Judges.
Billionaires.
She pointed toward the oldest portrait.
"Our family has protected this country's economy for over two hundred years."
"We choose heirs carefully."
Emily frowned.
"You mean..."
"You choose babies."
Eleanor nodded.
"The strongest bloodline survives."
"The weakest disappears."
Emily's stomach turned.
"You treated children like investments."
Eleanor looked at her almost sympathetically.
"No."
"We treated them like history."
Detective Harris suddenly interrupted.
"One question."
Eleanor turned.
"The second baby."
"What happened to her?"
Silence.
For the first time...
Eleanor didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
She looked toward Elizabeth.
Then toward Emily.
Finally...
She whispered,
"I raised her."
Emily blinked.
"What?"
"The second little girl..."
"Grew up as my granddaughter."
Anna gasped.
"No..."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
"She never knew the truth."
Emily's voice shook.
"Where is she?"
Footsteps echoed from the hallway.
A young woman entered.
Around thirty years old.
Elegant.
Confident.
Chestnut hair.
Hazel eyes.
She looked so much like Emily that Detective Harris instinctively took a step backward.
The two women stared at each other.
Mirror images.
The newcomer smiled politely.
"Hello, Emily."
"My name..."
She paused.
"...is Claire."
Emily whispered,
"We look identical."
Claire nodded.
"So they always told me."
Neither woman understood why.
Until Eleanor quietly spoke the words that changed everything.
"You were never switched."
The room fell silent.
Anna frowned.
"What?"
Eleanor looked at both women.
"There was never a mistake."
Emily's heartbeat thundered.
"What are you talking about?"
Eleanor smiled.
"There were twins."
The world stopped.
Elizabeth staggered backward.
"No..."
"I only gave birth to one baby."
Eleanor's smile widened.
"That's what we allowed you to remember."
Elizabeth's face drained of color.
"What did you do to me?"
Eleanor answered calmly.
"We erased half your life."
Emily slowly turned toward Claire.
Claire looked just as stunned.
Eleanor walked toward the window.
"The real experiment..."
"...was never about changing babies."
She looked back over her shoulder.
"It was about separating sisters."
Before anyone could speak again...
The lights throughout Ashcroft Manor suddenly went dark.
Gunshots exploded outside.
Security alarms screamed.
Victor Langford burst through the doorway.
"They're here!"
Eleanor frowned.
"Who?"
Victor's face had turned white.
"The Board."
May you like
"They've decided..."
"...everyone in this house must disappear."
