Chapter 3: The Fingerprints

Chapter 3: The Fingerprints
The report slipped from Emily's trembling hands.
It fluttered onto the library floor.
No one bent to pick it up.
The words remained impossible to ignore.
Fingerprint Match: Anna Reynolds.
Emily stared at the woman who had just saved her life.
"You cut the cable?"
Her voice barely existed.
Anna didn't answer immediately.
She looked at the report.
Then at Emily.
Finally, she nodded.
"Yes."
The room exploded with confusion.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
"You admit it?"
"Yes."
"You cut the chandelier cable."
Emily's face turned white.
"But... why?"
Anna slowly sat down, exhausted.
"Because it wasn't supposed to fall today."
Silence.
"What?"
Anna folded her shaking hands.
"I cut it."
"But I also reinforced it."
Detective Harris frowned.
"Explain."
Anna closed her eyes.
"Three nights ago, I discovered someone had already filed halfway through the main suspension cable."
She reached into her apron and removed several photographs.
Close-up images of the chandelier taken days earlier.
The steel strands were visibly damaged.
"I realized someone intended to murder Emily."
"So why didn't you call the police?" Harris demanded.
"I had no proof."
"And I knew whoever planned it was watching this house."
Emily's breathing grew shallow.
"So... you cut it?"
Anna nodded.
"I cut the remaining damaged section."
"Then I attached a temporary safety cable."
She pulled another photograph from the stack.
Hidden above the ceiling beams...
A thick industrial climbing rope had been secretly tied to the chandelier's steel frame.
"I created a second support."
Detective Harris examined the pictures.
"It should have held."
Anna nodded.
"It did."
"Until someone cut my rope."
The detective froze.
Emily's heartbeat pounded in her ears.
"What are you saying?"
Anna looked directly at her.
"The murderer knew I had discovered the trap."
"So he changed the plan."
Crime scene investigators rushed back upstairs.
Within minutes, one officer shouted from the ceiling access panel.
"Detective!"
Harris climbed the ladder.
Seconds later...
He fell completely silent.
When he climbed back down, his face had changed.
He held a frayed section of climbing rope.
The cut was perfectly clean.
Not broken.
Not torn.
Sliced.
Someone had deliberately severed Anna's emergency support.
Harris whispered,
"She's telling the truth."
Emily's knees weakened.
"If Anna hadn't pushed me..."
"You would've been standing exactly where the chandelier landed."
Emily slowly looked toward the shattered marble.
Toward the mountain of crystal.
Toward the blood still staining Anna's sleeve.
The woman she had almost believed was a murderer...
Had risked everything trying to save her.
Twice.
Meanwhile...
Daniel sat alone inside the county detention center.
The metal door opened.
Victor Langford entered without a word.
Daniel stood.
"You got in here?"
Victor smiled faintly.
"I go wherever I'm needed."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Anna knows too much."
Victor nodded.
"So do you."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"I never agreed to kill Emily."
Victor looked at him without emotion.
"You married her."
"You accepted the inheritance."
"You accepted our money."
"You knew the conditions."
Daniel's face hardened.
"I thought we'd scare her."
"I didn't know my father wanted her dead."
Victor remained silent.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"My father..."
"He really ordered it?"
Victor answered quietly.
"Everything began with your father."
"And everything ends with your father."
Back at the mansion...
Detective Harris received a phone call.
His expression darkened.
"What?"
"When?"
Emily watched him carefully.
He ended the call.
"What happened?"
"The hospital."
"What hospital?"
"St. Catherine's."
Emily's stomach tightened.
"The archive building caught fire."
Anna stood so suddenly that her chair crashed backward.
"No..."
Harris nodded grimly.
"The entire basement."
"Every birth record from thirty years ago..."
He hesitated.
"Destroyed."
Anna whispered,
"They're cleaning up."
The three of them drove to the hospital immediately.
Firefighters were still spraying water across the smoking ruins.
Black smoke curled into the night sky.
Emily stared at the collapsed archive wing.
"This wasn't an accident."
A fire captain approached.
"It started in the records room."
"No electrical fault."
"No gas leak."
"Someone used accelerants."
Detective Harris looked toward the burned windows.
"They got here before we did."
Anna suddenly grabbed Emily's wrist.
"Look."
Across the street...
An elderly janitor stood watching the fire.
The moment he noticed Anna, his eyes widened.
Then he turned and walked away.
Fast.
Too fast for an old man.
"Stop him!"
Harris shouted.
The three of them ran.
The man disappeared into a narrow alley.
By the time they reached it...
He was gone.
Only a small envelope remained on the ground.
Anna picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
A little girl.
About five years old.
Standing beside Anna.
Emily stared at it.
"That's you..."
Anna nodded.
"And that's..."
She swallowed hard.
"Your mother."
Emily looked closer.
The little girl wasn't her.
It was another child.
Someone with blonde hair.
Not chestnut.
Not Emily.
She turned the photograph over.
Written in faded ink were six chilling words.
The wrong child went home.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just six words.
Emily felt the world tilt beneath her feet.
"If I'm the wrong child..."
She looked at Anna.
"Then..."
"Who am I?"
Anna's lips trembled.
"I've been asking myself that..."
"For twenty-eight years."
Just then...
A black SUV rolled slowly past the burning hospital.
Its tinted window lowered only an inch.
Inside, an elegant older man watched Emily in silence.
His silver signet ring bore the same crown emblem from the hospital files.
He smiled.
Then spoke into his phone.
"Confirm her identity."
A calm female voice answered.
"We already have."
The man smiled wider.
"No."
"I don't think we do."
The SUV disappeared into the darkness.

And for the first time...
Someone besides Emily began to wonder if she had ever truly been Emily Hart at all.
