Chapter 4: The Girl Who Never Existed

Chapter 4: The Girl Who Never Existed
Rain began to fall as Emily stood outside the burned remains of St. Catherine's Hospital.
The photograph shook in her hands.
The wrong child went home.
Six words.
Nothing more.
Yet they had shattered everything she had ever believed about herself.
Detective Harris carefully sealed the photograph inside an evidence bag.
"Someone wanted us to find this."
Anna nodded.
"They always leave clues."
Emily looked at her.
"They?"
Anna's eyes drifted toward the smoking building.
"The Ashcroft Circle."
"They never threaten."
"They manipulate."
"They let you discover exactly what they want... exactly when they want."
Emily's stomach tightened.
"Then this photograph..."
Anna answered quietly.
"...may be true."
"...or it may be another lie."
Back at the mansion...
Forensic investigators were still searching Daniel's study.
One officer called from behind a wall of antique books.
"Detective!"
Harris hurried over.
"What is it?"
"We found another compartment."
A hidden panel slid open.
Inside...
There was no money.
No jewelry.
Only a single VHS cassette.
Its handwritten label read:
Delivery Room 4
June 17, 1998
Emily stared.
"A recording?"
Harris nodded.
"If we're lucky."
Minutes later, they gathered inside the mansion's private theater.
An old projector hummed to life.
Static flickered across the screen.
Then...
A hospital delivery room appeared.
The timestamp confirmed the date.
Nurses rushed around.
Doctors shouted instructions.
A young woman screamed in labor.
Emily leaned forward.
"My mother..."
Anna nodded silently.
Dr. Elizabeth Hart.
Alive.
Smiling despite the pain.
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"I've never seen her move before."
Every photograph Emily owned had been still.
Frozen.
Now, for the first time...
She heard her mother's voice.
"If it's a girl..."
Elizabeth whispered between contractions,
"...tell her she was loved before she ever opened her eyes."
Emily covered her mouth.
The room fell silent.
Then...
The image suddenly distorted.
The recording skipped.
Static.
Another camera angle appeared.
A second operating room.
Another woman.
Also giving birth.
At the exact same time.
Emily frowned.
"There were two deliveries."
Anna whispered,
"Yes."
The second woman looked frightened.
Unlike Elizabeth, she wasn't wealthy.
She wore no jewelry.
No visitors stood beside her bed.
Only one elderly nun held her hand.
The nurse looked toward the camera.
"Patient number two is ready."
A doctor replied,
"Good."
"The Circle ordered both births to remain confidential."
Emily's heartbeat stopped.
"The Circle..."
Anna slowly nodded.
"They were there."
The footage continued.
Elizabeth gave birth first.
A healthy baby girl cried loudly.
The doctor smiled.
"Congratulations."
But before anyone handed the baby to her...
Three men in dark suits entered the room.
No badges.
No introductions.
One simply held up the crown insignia.
Every nurse immediately stepped aside.
Emily felt sick.
"What are they doing?"
Anna's face had gone pale.
"I never saw this part."
One of the suited men looked directly into the camera.
Then...
The recording cut again.
Static.
When the image returned...
The baby lying beside Elizabeth was different.
Emily narrowed her eyes.
"What..."
Anna stood up.
"No."
Emily looked at her.
"What?"
Anna pointed at the screen.
"The blanket."
Emily frowned.
"The blanket?"
"When Elizabeth delivered..."
"The baby was wrapped in a white blanket."
"Now look."
The infant beside her now wore a pink blanket.
Emily froze.
It wasn't the same baby.
Someone had switched them.
Suddenly...
The tape stopped.
The screen turned black.
A message appeared in white letters.
RECORDING TERMINATED
Emily slammed her fist against the armrest.
"No!"
"That's it?"
Harris examined the cassette.
"The tape has been cut."
"The final twenty minutes are missing."
Anna whispered,
"They removed the truth."
Just then...
One of the forensic officers rushed into the theater.
"Detective!"
"What happened?"
"We found a second cassette."
Everyone hurried back upstairs.
Inside Daniel's hidden compartment...
Another tape rested beneath the first.
This one carried only a handwritten name.
ANNA
Her face turned white.
"I've never seen this."
Harris inserted the cassette.
The screen flickered.
The date read:
June 18, 1998
Anna appeared.
She looked much younger.
Still wearing her nurse's uniform.
She was crying.
Looking directly into the camera.
"If anyone ever finds this..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...my name is Anna Reynolds."
"They're going to blame me."
Emily's eyes widened.
Anna herself stared at the screen in disbelief.
"I don't remember recording this."
The younger Anna continued.
"I refused to participate."
"I refused to switch the babies."
"So they drugged me."
"When I woke up..."
Her voice broke.
"...one child was gone."
Emily felt tears forming.
The younger Anna looked straight into the camera.
"I don't know which baby survived."
"I don't know which child they gave Elizabeth."
"I only know..."
"They murdered someone that night."
The room froze.
Emily whispered,
"They killed a baby?"
Anna slowly shook her head.
"I don't think that's what she meant."
The younger Anna continued speaking.
"They didn't kill her body."
"They erased her life."
"They created a new child."
"A child who..."
The recording suddenly dissolved into static.
Then silence.
The tape had ended.
Emily looked toward the older Anna.
"What does that mean?"
Anna answered with tears in her eyes.
"It means one little girl disappeared..."
"...without ever dying."
At that exact moment...
Across town...
Victor Langford unlocked the door to an abandoned church.
Candles already burned inside.
An elderly woman sat alone in the front pew.
Elegant.
Perfect posture.
Silver hair.
The diamond crown brooch glimmered beneath the candlelight.
Without turning around, she asked,
"Has Emily seen the tapes?"
"Yes."
"And?"
Victor hesitated.
"She's asking the right questions."
The woman smiled faintly.
"Good."
Victor looked confused.
"I thought we wanted to stop her."
The woman finally turned.
Her face was calm.
Almost grandmotherly.
But her eyes held no warmth.
"No, Victor."
"We wanted her to begin looking."
Victor's expression changed.
"You planned this?"
She nodded.
"For twenty-eight years."
She stood slowly, gripping her silver cane.
"The girl believes she's searching for her past."
A cold smile spread across her face.
"But every answer she finds..."
"...is leading her exactly where I want her."
She looked toward the stained-glass window.
"And when she finally discovers who she really is..."
May you like
Her smile disappeared.
"...she'll walk into my house willingly."
