"Sir... were these injuries from combat?"
The veteran nodded.
"Twelve years ago."
He rolled back his sleeve, revealing skin permanently scarred by fire.
"Our convoy hit an IED."
"My truck exploded."
"I pulled three soldiers out before the ammunition started cooking off."
His voice never changed.
"I was the last one to leave."
A young couple nearby lowered their eyes.
The husband quietly removed his baseball cap.
The realtor suddenly realized those scars she had mocked weren't signs of weakness.
