Chapter 3: The Landing

Chapter 3: The Landing
The remainder of the flight passed in complete silence.
Ashley never looked at Ryan again.
She stared out the window as Cancun's coastline appeared beneath the clouds.
When we landed, passengers remained seated while the doors were prepared.
Ryan waited near the aircraft exit until every other traveler had left.
Ashley walked off first.
She didn't say goodbye.
She didn't wait.
She simply disappeared into the terminal.
Ryan finally approached me.
"I'm sorry."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I made the biggest mistake of my life."
I looked at the wedding ring still resting on my finger.
Then I slowly removed it.
For a moment, I held it in my palm.
"This belongs to the man I married," I said quietly.
"I don't know the man standing in front of me."
His eyes filled with regret.
"Can we start over?"
I smiled.
Not the polite airline smile.
Not the smile that hid pain.
A peaceful smile.
"No."
I placed the ring into his hand.
"You already chose your destination."
He looked down at the ring as though it weighed a thousand pounds.
I picked up my flight bag.
The passengers were gone.
The cabin was empty.
My shift was over.
So was my marriage.
As I walked through the aircraft door into the bright Cancun sunshine, I realized something unexpected.
Revenge had never been humiliating him in first class.
It had been refusing to let his betrayal steal my dignity.
Behind me, Ryan remained standing alone inside the silent cabin, clutching a wedding ring that no longer meant home.
