Chapter 2: The Truth at Thirty Thousand Feet

Chapter 2: The Truth at Thirty Thousand Feet
Ashley returned just as Ryan walked back to his seat.
She looked confused.
"You two really know each other."
Ryan laughed nervously.
"She's an old client."
I happened to be serving coffee to the row behind them.
Without interrupting my work, I calmly said,
"I'm sorry, sir."
Ryan froze.
"I don't believe we've ever done business together."
Silence.
Ashley slowly turned toward him.
"What?"
Ryan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The lie had collapsed before it even landed.
Ashley looked directly at me.
"Then... how do you know him?"
I hesitated.
Every passenger nearby had quietly stopped pretending not to listen.
The cabin felt strangely still.
Finally I answered with the same calm voice I'd used throughout the flight.
"I know Mr. Carter because we've been married for eleven years."
Ashley blinked.
"What?"
Ryan whispered,
"Valerie..."
I continued serving coffee.
"As I said, ma'am, would you like cream or sugar?"
Ashley stood so quickly her champagne nearly spilled.
"You told me your divorce was finished!"
Ryan reached for her arm.
"Please..."
She pulled away.
"You said she was gone!"
Several passengers exchanged stunned glances.
No one spoke.

No one needed to.
Ryan's carefully constructed life was collapsing row by row.
