CHAPTER 2 The Report That Could End Everything Alex arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital eight minutes after the ambulance. He had driven faster than he ever had in his life. Every red light became invisible. Every second felt stolen from the wife he had already betrayed. The emergency entrance was chaos. Doctors rushed past. Nurses shouted medication dosages. A trauma team disappeared through double doors with Lucy's stretcher. Alex tried to follow. A security officer stepped in front of him. "You can't go in." "My wife!" "Sir." "You need to wait." Alex looked through the closing doors. For one brief moment... He saw Lucy's hand hanging over the side of the stretcher. The place where her wedding ring had always been... Was empty. His chest tightened. Behind him, Captain Marcus Reynolds entered the hospital with Battalion Chief Daniel Harper. Neither man looked pleased. Marcus folded his arms. "Alex." "We need to talk." "Not now." "Now." Alex turned slowly. Marcus held a clipboard. The official rescue report. "You violated rescue protocol." "I saved a civilian." "You abandoned a higher-priority patient." "I didn't know." Marcus stared directly into his eyes. "That's going to be very difficult to explain." Alex swallowed. "I made a mistake." Marcus shook his head. "No." "A mistake is dropping equipment." "A mistake is taking the wrong staircase." "You ignored dispatch." "You ignored medical priority." "You ignored your crew." "And then..." Marcus's voice hardened. "You rescued your former girlfriend." Silence. The words spread through the hallway. Several firefighters exchanged uneasy glances. Alex lowered his head. He had no defense. None. At that exact moment... A nurse pushed through the operating room doors. "Family of Lucy Davis?" Alex stepped forward instantly. "I'm her husband." The nurse looked at him. Then down at her chart. Finally... She asked the question that shattered what remained of his composure. "Are you the firefighter who left her inside the elevator?" Alex couldn't answer. The silence was answer enough. The nurse's expression changed. Not anger. Something colder. Disappointment. She spoke quietly. "Dr. Carter is doing everything possible." "But both mother and baby are critical." Then she disappeared behind the operating room doors. Alex leaned against the wall. His legs gave out beneath him. Across the hallway... Valerie arrived in a wheelchair. She wasn't injured. Only dehydrated. She spotted Alex immediately. "Alex..." She reached for his hand. He looked at her. For the first time... He saw not the frightened woman he had carried out. But the reason his wife had nearly died. He slowly pulled his hand away. Valerie froze. "Alex?" His voice was almost empty. "Don't touch me." Before Valerie could respond... Captain Reynolds' phone rang. He answered. Listened. His face darkened. Then he looked directly at Alex. "The department has already received three civilian videos." Alex frowned. "What videos?" Marcus turned the phone around. A bystander had filmed everything. Alex running into the elevator... Ignoring every trapped victim... Lifting Valerie into his arms... Walking straight past Lucy without even looking at her. Millions of people would soon see it. And once they did... Nothing would ever be the same. End of Chapter 2 / Chapter 8 / 14

CHAPTER 9 The Shot in the Dark

CHAPTER 9

The Shot in the Dark

The gunshot echoed through the ICU like a thunderclap.

For one terrifying second...

Nobody moved.

Then chaos erupted.

Nurses screamed.

Patients cried out.

Emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the hallway in a dim red glow.

Someone shouted,

"Lock down the floor!"

Another voice yelled,

"Call hospital security!"

Alex's instincts took over.

Even suspended from duty, years of training erased every other thought.

He sprinted toward Lucy's room.

A security guard stepped in front of him.

"Sir, stay back!"

Alex shoved past him.

"My wife is in there!"

Inside the ICU...

Lucy flinched at the sound of the gunshot.

The heart monitor beside her accelerated.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Ethan instinctively moved in front of her bed.

"What happened?"

Lucy whispered.

Before he could answer...

The lights went out completely.

Only the emergency battery lamps remained, casting eerie shadows across the room.

Someone tried the door handle.

Once.

Twice.

Then...

It stopped.

Lucy grabbed Ethan's wrist with surprising strength.

"They're here."

Ethan looked at her.

"Who?"

Lucy stared at the dark doorway.

"They came..."

"...for the key."

Outside...

Alex reached the ICU entrance just as another gunshot rang out.

BANG!

Glass shattered somewhere down the hallway.

Hospital staff ducked behind counters.

Captain Marcus Reynolds grabbed Alex by the arm.

"Stay down!"

Alex ignored him.

"My wife!"

Marcus pulled him behind a concrete pillar.

"Whoever fired that weapon isn't here for random victims."

Detective Rachel Morgan appeared from the stairwell, her service pistol already drawn.

"We've got one suspect moving toward the east corridor."

"Hospital security lost visual."

Marcus frowned.

"How many?"

"We don't know."

Three floors below...

The hospital's backup generators roared to life.

But someone had anticipated that.

In a locked electrical room...

A masked figure calmly disconnected the secondary power relay.

The emergency lights dimmed again.

The man checked his watch.

Then spoke quietly into an earpiece.

"Thirty seconds."

A calm voice answered.

"The girl?"

"Still alive."

"And Whitmore?"

"On the floor."

The voice paused.

Then issued one final order.

"No witnesses."

Back inside Lucy's room...

Ethan slowly approached the door.

Every instinct told him not to open it.

Another soft knock echoed.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two taps.

Lucy immediately shook her head.

"No."

"What?"

"Don't answer."

"Why?"

Her breathing became uneven.

"My mother..."

"...used that knock."

Ethan frowned.

"Then maybe it's someone you know."

Lucy looked terrified.

"My mother has been dead..."

"...for twenty-six years."

At that exact moment...

The ICU door swung open.

Ethan spun around.

His pulse raced.

Instead of an attacker...

Benjamin Whitmore stepped inside.

He immediately locked the door behind him.

Lucy stared at him.

Neither of them spoke.

Benjamin slowly removed his glasses.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Lucy..."

Her breathing stopped.

She looked at him carefully.

Really looked.

Something about his face.

His voice.

The way he stood.

Fragments of forgotten memories surfaced.

A warm hand holding hers.

A lullaby.

A silver pocket watch.

A man laughing.

Her lips parted.

"No..."

Benjamin nodded, tears rolling freely now.

"I'm sorry."

"So... so sorry."

Lucy whispered,

"I know you."

Benjamin's voice broke.

"I prayed you'd remember."

Ethan looked between them in complete confusion.

"What's happening?"

Benjamin turned toward him.

His answer changed everything.

"I'm not here because I knew Lucy."

He took a trembling breath.

"I'm here..."

"...because she's my daughter."

Silence consumed the room.

Ethan felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Lucy stared at Benjamin in disbelief.

"My..."

"...father?"

Benjamin nodded.

"Yes."

"I've spent twenty-six years searching for you."

Before Lucy could respond...

The ICU window exploded inward.

CRASH!

A masked gunman climbed through the shattered glass, pistol raised.

He wasn't aiming at Benjamin.

He wasn't aiming at Ethan.

His sights locked directly onto Lucy.

"You should have stayed forgotten."

He pulled the trigger.

May you like

BANG!
