CHAPTER 3 A Video the Whole City Could See

CHAPTER 3
A Video the Whole City Could See
By midnight, the video had already spread across Chicago.
By sunrise...
It belonged to the world.
No one knew who had uploaded it.
The title was only eight words long.
"Firefighter Saves Mistress While Pregnant Wife Is Left Behind."
Millions clicked.
Millions watched.
Millions judged.
The footage was shaky, recorded on a cellphone from behind the barricades.
It began with firefighters cutting open the elevator doors.
Smoke drifted into the afternoon sunlight.
Then came Alex.
He sprinted into the elevator without hesitation.
People watching the video expected him to grab the weakest victim first.
Instead...
He ran directly toward Valerie.
Gasps erupted from the crowd as he wrapped both arms around her and carried her out.
Seconds later, another firefighter appeared.
He knelt beside a woman no one had noticed before.
Lucy.
Pale.
Barely conscious.
One hand covering her pregnant belly.
The camera zoomed in.
The rookie took something from her.
A wedding ring.
Then he walked toward Alex.
The recording ended just before the confrontation.
That unfinished ending somehow made it even more devastating.
Everyone imagined what happened next.
The internet filled in the rest.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital...
Alex sat outside the operating room, staring at the floor.
His phone vibrated nonstop.
He ignored it.
Another vibration.
Another.
Then another.
Finally, Captain Marcus Reynolds picked up the device from the chair beside him.
"Alex..."
"You should see this."
Alex didn't move.
Marcus sighed and unlocked the screen.
Thousands of notifications flooded across it.
Missed Calls: 187
Unread Messages: 1,942
News stations.
Friends.
Relatives.
Firefighters from neighboring stations.
Even people Alex had not spoken to in years.
Marcus opened social media.
The first post already had nearly twelve million views.
The comments multiplied every second.
"He rescued his mistress first?"
"That pregnant woman was his wife?"
"He violated every rescue protocol."
"He doesn't deserve that uniform."
"Take his badge."
"Take his pension."
"Put him in prison."
Alex felt sick.
He stood and rushed toward the restroom.
Seconds later...
The sound of violent vomiting echoed through the empty hallway.
Across town...
Reporter Olivia Grant adjusted her microphone outside the hospital.
"This is Olivia Grant reporting live."
"What began as an elevator rescue has rapidly become one of the most controversial emergency responses in recent Chicago history."
Behind her, television screens replayed the video again.
And again.
And again.
"The Chicago Fire Department has not yet released an official statement."
"However, eyewitnesses claim Lieutenant Alex Davis ignored established triage procedures by rescuing a woman later identified as Valerie Carter before assisting his own pregnant wife."
Olivia paused as producers spoke into her earpiece.
Her eyes widened.
"We've just received confirmation..."
"The woman left inside the elevator remains in critical condition after emergency surgery."
No further details were available.
But one sentence was enough.
The nation held its breath.
Inside the ICU...
Machines filled the room with soft electronic beeps.
Lucy hadn't opened her eyes.
A ventilator breathed for her.
Tubes surrounded her like fragile vines.
Dr. Amelia Carter quietly reviewed the monitors.
She had delivered hundreds of babies during her career.
Very few under circumstances like these.
The operating room had become a battlefield.
They had managed to stabilize Lucy.
Barely.
The baby...
Not yet.
A neonatal team fought desperately in another room.
Every passing minute felt stolen from fate itself.
Dr. Carter removed her gloves.
She stepped into the hallway.
Alex immediately stood.
"Doctor..."
"How is she?"
The doctor looked at him for a long time before speaking.
"I need to ask you something first."
Alex blinked.
"What?"
"Were you aware your wife was trapped inside that elevator?"
The question struck harder than any accusation.
"Yes."
"Were you aware she was twenty-four weeks pregnant?"
"...Yes."
"Were you aware oxygen deprivation is particularly dangerous for unborn children?"
Alex slowly nodded.
Dr. Carter closed the medical file.
"Then I honestly don't understand."
Neither did Alex.
Not anymore.
Meanwhile...
Valerie sat alone in another hospital room.
The television played muted news coverage.
Every channel showed the same images.
Alex carrying her.
Lucy lying forgotten behind him.
She turned the television off.
Then opened her purse.
Inside rested an old photograph.
Six years earlier.
Alex.
Valerie.
Smiling together outside a small coffee shop.
She traced Alex's face with one finger.
A slow smile appeared.
Not joyful.
Calculated.
Almost satisfied.
She whispered to herself.
"I told you..."
"...you'd always choose me."
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
She looked up.
Standing in the doorway...
Was Ethan Brooks.
The rookie firefighter.
His expression was no longer confused.
It was suspicious.
Very suspicious.
"There are a few things..."
he said quietly,
"...I'd like to ask you."
Valerie's smile disappeared.
For the first time since the rescue...
May you like
She looked genuinely nervous.
