CHAPTER 2 The Report That Could End Everything Alex arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital eight minutes after the ambulance. He had driven faster than he ever had in his life. Every red light became invisible. Every second felt stolen from the wife he had already betrayed. The emergency entrance was chaos. Doctors rushed past. Nurses shouted medication dosages. A trauma team disappeared through double doors with Lucy's stretcher. Alex tried to follow. A security officer stepped in front of him. "You can't go in." "My wife!" "Sir." "You need to wait." Alex looked through the closing doors. For one brief moment... He saw Lucy's hand hanging over the side of the stretcher. The place where her wedding ring had always been... Was empty. His chest tightened. Behind him, Captain Marcus Reynolds entered the hospital with Battalion Chief Daniel Harper. Neither man looked pleased. Marcus folded his arms. "Alex." "We need to talk." "Not now." "Now." Alex turned slowly. Marcus held a clipboard. The official rescue report. "You violated rescue protocol." "I saved a civilian." "You abandoned a higher-priority patient." "I didn't know." Marcus stared directly into his eyes. "That's going to be very difficult to explain." Alex swallowed. "I made a mistake." Marcus shook his head. "No." "A mistake is dropping equipment." "A mistake is taking the wrong staircase." "You ignored dispatch." "You ignored medical priority." "You ignored your crew." "And then..." Marcus's voice hardened. "You rescued your former girlfriend." Silence. The words spread through the hallway. Several firefighters exchanged uneasy glances. Alex lowered his head. He had no defense. None. At that exact moment... A nurse pushed through the operating room doors. "Family of Lucy Davis?" Alex stepped forward instantly. "I'm her husband." The nurse looked at him. Then down at her chart. Finally... She asked the question that shattered what remained of his composure. "Are you the firefighter who left her inside the elevator?" Alex couldn't answer. The silence was answer enough. The nurse's expression changed. Not anger. Something colder. Disappointment. She spoke quietly. "Dr. Carter is doing everything possible." "But both mother and baby are critical." Then she disappeared behind the operating room doors. Alex leaned against the wall. His legs gave out beneath him. Across the hallway... Valerie arrived in a wheelchair. She wasn't injured. Only dehydrated. She spotted Alex immediately. "Alex..." She reached for his hand. He looked at her. For the first time... He saw not the frightened woman he had carried out. But the reason his wife had nearly died. He slowly pulled his hand away. Valerie froze. "Alex?" His voice was almost empty. "Don't touch me." Before Valerie could respond... Captain Reynolds' phone rang. He answered. Listened. His face darkened. Then he looked directly at Alex. "The department has already received three civilian videos." Alex frowned. "What videos?" Marcus turned the phone around. A bystander had filmed everything. Alex running into the elevator... Ignoring every trapped victim... Lifting Valerie into his arms... Walking straight past Lucy without even looking at her. Millions of people would soon see it. And once they did... Nothing would ever be the same. End of Chapter 2 / Chapter 10 / 14

CHAPTER 11 The Ghost on Camera

CHAPTER 11

The Ghost on Camera

"No..."

Detective Rachel Morgan whispered again, barely able to hear her own voice.

The security technician frowned.

"You know this guy?"

Rachel stepped closer to the monitor.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

The face on the screen was older than she remembered.

There were new scars.

Gray at the temples.

But those eyes...

She would never mistake them.

"Zoom in."

The technician enlarged the image.

The man's left cheek carried a thin scar running from the corner of his eye to his jawline.

Rachel closed her eyes for a second.

When she opened them again...

Nothing had changed.

"It can't be..."

she murmured.

The technician looked confused.

"Who is he?"

Rachel answered without taking her eyes off the screen.

"Michael Kane."

The room fell silent.

The technician searched his memory.

"The FBI agent?"

Rachel slowly nodded.

"Former FBI."

"Twelve years ago."

"He disappeared during an undercover operation."

"They found a burned vehicle."

"A body inside."

"Dental records confirmed it."

The technician frowned.

"So..."

"If that's him..."

Rachel finished the sentence.

"...then someone buried the wrong man."

Three floors above...

Alex sat outside the operating room.

His shirt was stained with Benjamin's blood.

His hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Lucy had finally fallen asleep after doctors increased her pain medication.

For the first time since the rescue...

She looked peaceful.

Alex wondered whether she was dreaming.

Or reliving the nightmare inside that elevator.

He hoped it wasn't the second.

He couldn't bear knowing he was part of it.

Captain Marcus Reynolds approached carrying two cups of coffee.

He handed one to Alex.

Alex stared at it.

"I don't deserve coffee."

Marcus sighed.

"No."

"You deserve answers."

Alex finally accepted the cup.

Neither man drank.

Marcus broke the silence.

"Internal Affairs suspended the investigation."

Alex looked up.

"What?"

"They're transferring the case."

"To who?"

Marcus hesitated.

"The FBI."

Alex blinked.

"The FBI?"

Marcus nodded.

"They arrived fifteen minutes ago."

At that exact moment...

Two men in dark suits stepped off the elevator.

No uniforms.

No visible weapons.

Just black identification wallets clipped to their belts.

One of them walked directly toward Rachel Morgan.

"I'm Special Agent Daniel Cross."

"The Bureau is assuming control."

Rachel folded her arms.

"I've already identified the suspect."

Cross looked at her calmly.

"So have we."

Rachel frowned.

"You already knew?"

Cross ignored the question.

Instead, he slid a classified folder across the table.

Across the front, stamped in bold red letters:

RAVEN PROGRAM

Rachel looked up.

"What is this?"

Cross's expression remained unreadable.

"A file that should never have been opened."

Meanwhile...

Benjamin's surgery had just ended.

Dr. Carter removed her gloves and stepped into the hallway.

Alex stood immediately.

"Is he alive?"

She nodded.

"The bullet missed the artery."

"He'll recover."

Alex let out a long breath.

Then Dr. Carter added quietly,

"But he asked for you."

Benjamin's hospital room was dimly lit.

He looked exhausted.

His shoulder was heavily bandaged.

Despite the pain, he motioned Alex closer.

"We don't have much time."

Alex pulled up a chair.

"What did you mean..."

"...about people watching Lucy since birth?"

Benjamin stared at the ceiling.

"It started before she was born."

Alex remained silent.

Benjamin continued.

"Her mother..."

"Emily..."

"Worked for a private intelligence project."

"What kind of project?"

Benjamin smiled bitterly.

"The kind that officially never existed."

Alex frowned.

"What was it called?"

Benjamin closed his eyes.

"Raven."

The word hung in the room.

Benjamin opened his eyes again.

"They recruited brilliant scientists."

"Military officers."

"Federal agents."

"They claimed they were protecting national security."

"What were they really doing?"

Benjamin's face hardened.

"Creating perfect identities."

Alex didn't understand.

"What does that mean?"

"They erased people's pasts."

"They gave children new names."

"New families."

"New histories."

Alex's pulse quickened.

"And Lucy?"

Benjamin nodded slowly.

"She was born into Raven."

"But Emily wanted out."

"So we ran."

Alex struggled to process the story.

"You expect me to believe my wife was born into some secret organization?"

Benjamin looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"I expect you to believe..."

"...because they're trying to kill her."

Silence.

Alex couldn't argue with that.

Someone had already tried.

Twice.

Benjamin reached toward the bedside drawer.

His hand trembled.

Inside lay an old silver pocket watch.

He placed it into Alex's palm.

Lucy had described it.

In her fragmented memory.

Alex recognized it instantly.

"She remembered this."

Benjamin smiled faintly.

"Good."

He pressed a small button hidden beneath the watch.

Click.

The back cover opened.

Inside...

Instead of gears...

There was a tiny folded photograph.

Alex carefully removed it.

The picture showed four people.

Benjamin.

Emily.

A newborn Lucy.

And...

Another little girl.

Alex frowned.

"Who's this?"

Benjamin's smile disappeared.

"I don't know."

Alex looked up.

"What?"

Benjamin swallowed hard.

"When Emily escaped Raven..."

"...she wasn't carrying one baby."

The room became perfectly still.

Alex stared at the photograph again.

Two infants.

Wrapped in identical blankets.

Same hospital bracelet.

Same birth date.

Twins.

Benjamin's voice cracked.

"Lucy..."

"...has a twin sister."

Before Alex could speak...

Benjamin whispered something that made the blood drain from his face.

"And Raven..."

May you like

"...took her."
