CHAPTER 3: THE REASON HE CHOSE ME

CHAPTER 3: THE REASON HE CHOSE ME
I spent the entire night reading.
Every document.
Every record.
Every hidden detail Adrian buried.
And slowly…
The truth became more painful than the betrayal.
The foundation wasn't created because Adrian was generous.
It was created because he knew something about me before we met.
Something I didn't even know.
Years ago, when I was twenty-three, I donated bone marrow anonymously to a stranger.
I never thought about it again.
It was just something I did.
But that stranger survived.
And that stranger was Adrian’s younger brother, Michael.
Adrian had found my name through the hospital records.
He knew exactly who I was before our first conversation.
He knew my kindness.
My history.
My life.
At first, I wanted to believe it was romantic.
That fate brought us together.
But then I found the final document.
A note written by Adrian.
The words made my stomach turn.
“Find someone with Claire’s heart.”
I read it again.
And again.
Because I couldn't accept what I was seeing.
Adrian wasn't searching for me.
He was searching for a replacement.
A woman who could fill the empty space Claire left behind.
When Adrian came home, I was waiting.
“Did you love me?”
His face changed.
“Emma…”
“Answer me.”
He sat down.
“I do love you.”
I laughed.
A quiet, broken laugh.
“But did you love me because I was me?”
He couldn't answer.
That silence was the answer.
“I spent fifteen years believing I was your greatest choice.”
I picked up the papers.
“But I was just your second chance.”
Adrian looked devastated.
“That's not true.”
“Then tell me what is true.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.

Because sometimes the hardest truth isn't discovering someone lied.
It's discovering they convinced themselves the lie was love.
