CHAPTER 2: THE MARRIAGE THAT DISAPPEARED

CHAPTER 2: THE MARRIAGE THAT DISAPPEARED
I drove home without saying a word.
Adrian followed me.
He tried explaining.
At least, that’s what he called it.
But every sentence sounded like another excuse.
“Emma, it happened before you.”
“Emma, I was young.”
“Emma, I was afraid you would leave.”
But the question burning inside me wasn't about Claire.
It wasn't even about the past.
It was about the lie.
A marriage certificate.
A wife.
A life before me.
And he erased it completely.
When we arrived home, I placed the envelope on the kitchen table.
The same place where I discovered his affair.
Funny how that table had become the place where my entire marriage was falling apart.
“Tell me everything.”
Adrian sat down.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not successful.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“Claire and I were married when I was twenty-five,” he said.
“She helped me build my first company.”
I listened silently.
“She was there when nobody believed in me.”
My fingers tightened.
“Then why did you leave?”
He looked away.
“She died.”
The room became painfully quiet.
My anger froze.
“What?”
“She died in a car accident.”
I stared at him.
“Then why hide her?”
Adrian’s eyes filled with shame.
“Because after she died, I couldn't handle losing everything again.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn't explain why you lied to me.”
He didn't answer.
Because he knew.
There was no explanation.
Then I looked at the documents inside the envelope.
A legal file.
A bank record.
And one name repeated again and again.
Adrian Beckett Foundation.
“What is this?”
Adrian became pale.
“That’s private.”
“No.”
I pushed the papers toward him.
“Private is your favorite restaurant.
Private is your password.
Private is not a dead wife and a secret foundation.”
Then I saw the date.
The foundation was created one month before Adrian met me.
And the beneficiary…
Was not charity.
It was a person.
A person whose name I recognized.
May you like
My own name.
Emma Beckett.
