Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Smile The Bennett house had always been known as a place of warmth. At least, that was what everyone believed. Neighbors saw the perfect family. A successful father. A loving mother. A cheerful little boy. The kind of family people looked at and thought: They have everything. But behind the expensive walls and carefully arranged photographs, something had been growing in the darkness. Something nobody noticed. Except Noah. Luke finally pulled into the driveway. He didn’t even turn off the engine. The moment the car stopped, he jumped out and ran toward the front door. The sight waiting for him made him freeze. The house he had spent years building was almost unrecognizable. Broken glass covered the floor. Family pictures hung crooked on the walls. The expensive furniture Sarah had carefully chosen was damaged. But Luke barely noticed any of it. His eyes searched desperately. “Noah!” A small figure appeared from the hallway. “Daddy!” Luke dropped to his knees. Noah ran into his arms. The moment he felt his son’s small hands wrap around him, Luke finally allowed himself to breathe. He held Noah tightly. Too tightly. “I’m sorry,” Luke whispered. Noah pulled back. “Sorry for what?” Luke looked at his son. For a moment, he couldn’t answer. Because how could he explain to a four-year-old that he had spent years believing he could protect everyone? How could he explain that sometimes danger didn’t come from strangers? Sometimes it came from people sitting at your dinner table. “I should have been there.” Noah shook his head. “You came.” Those two words almost destroyed Luke. Because Noah wasn’t angry. He wasn’t blaming him. The child who had been terrified only minutes earlier was comforting his father. Luke wiped his eyes quickly and stood. Then he looked at Aaron Mason. The officer’s expression told him everything. Something was very wrong. “Where’s Sarah?” Mason didn’t answer immediately. Luke’s heart tightened. “Where is my wife?” “We’re still searching.” Luke stared at him. “What does that mean?” Mason looked toward the hallway. “It means we don’t know if she left willingly.” The words landed heavily. Luke looked at Travis. For the first time, he truly saw him. Not as his friend. Not as the man who had attended family dinners. Not as the person who had helped him start his company years ago. But as a stranger wearing a familiar face. “What happened?” Luke asked. Travis sat on the edge of a broken chair. His expression had changed completely. The confidence was gone. The arrogance was gone. Now he looked exhausted. “I was trying to stop her.” Luke stared. “Stop who?” Travis looked directly at him. “Sarah.” The room became silent. Even Noah looked confused. Luke slowly stepped forward. “Don’t say my wife’s name like that.” Travis shook his head. “You don’t understand.” “No.” Luke’s voice became colder. “You’re right.” He pointed toward the destroyed house. “I don’t understand why my son was hiding in a closet while you were trying to break down the door.” Travis looked away. “I wasn’t trying to hurt him.” “Then what were you doing?” Travis said nothing. Mason stepped in. “Maybe we should let him explain.” Luke looked at the officer. “You believe him?” “No.” Mason answered honestly. “But I believe there is more happening here.” Luke glanced at him. “What did you find?” Mason walked toward Luke’s office. “Come with me.” The office door was half open. Luke stopped outside. This room was his sanctuary. The place where he made decisions. The place where he built his company from nothing. But now it felt different. Almost like someone had invaded his mind. Mason pointed toward the desk. “The bag was hidden behind the bookshelf.” Luke walked closer. A black leather bag sat on the table. He stared at it. “I’ve never seen that before.” Mason nodded. “We believe Noah saw Travis putting it there.” Luke looked through the glass wall toward the living room. “Noah doesn’t lie.” “I know.” Mason opened the bag. The first thing inside was a folder. Luke recognized the logo immediately. His company. His eyes narrowed. “What is that?” Mason handed him the folder. Luke opened it. The first page contained financial reports. The second page contained employee information. The third page made his hands stop moving. Bank transfers. Private accounts. Money disappearing from his company. Luke’s face changed. “No…” Mason watched him carefully. “You know what this means?” Luke slowly looked up. “Yes.” His voice was barely audible. “These are internal documents.” “Meaning?” “Only three people had access.” Mason waited. Luke looked down. “Myself.” A pause. “Sarah.” Another pause. “And Travis.” The name felt poisonous now. Ten years earlier. Luke and Travis had been completely different people. Luke was the dreamer. The one who believed hard work could create anything. Travis was the strategist. The person who knew how to turn ideas into profit. Together, they created Bennett Technologies. A company that started in a small apartment and eventually became worth millions. Everyone called them brothers. Not by blood. By choice. But success changed things. Slowly. Quietly. At first, Luke didn’t notice. Travis began making decisions without asking. Hiring people without approval. Moving money between accounts. Luke assumed it was normal. Growing companies were complicated. Trust was necessary. And trust became the weapon. Back in the office, Luke turned another page. His expression became darker. “These transactions…” He looked at Mason. “They started three years ago.” Mason nodded. “Exactly.” Luke’s eyes widened. Three years. That was when everything changed. That was when Sarah became distant. That was when Travis started spending more time around their family. That was when Luke began working longer hours. Trying to save a marriage he thought was simply struggling. But what if the problem was never the marriage? What if someone had been controlling the situation from the beginning? A noise suddenly came from the hallway. Everyone turned. Noah stood there. Holding something in his small hand. “Daddy…” Luke immediately walked toward him. “What is it?” Noah opened his hand. A tiny flash drive rested in his palm. Luke stared. “Where did you get that?” Noah looked toward Travis. “He dropped it.” Travis’s face went pale. Mason immediately noticed. “Travis?” The man didn’t answer. Luke picked up the flash drive. “What’s inside?” Nobody spoke. But everyone already knew. Whatever was on that device was the reason someone had destroyed the house. The reason Noah had hidden. The reason Sarah disappeared. Mason reached for his phone. “We need to check this carefully.” Luke looked at the tiny piece of plastic sitting in his hand. A device smaller than a coin. Yet it had the power to destroy everything. Then Noah quietly said: “Daddy…” Luke looked down. “What, buddy?” Noah swallowed. “Before Travis broke things…” A pause. “He said he was sorry.” Luke frowned. “Sorry for what?” Noah looked toward the empty hallway. Then whispered: “He said…” “He said he should have done it three years ago.” Nobody moved. Because those words changed everything. Three years ago. The beginning of the betrayal. The beginning of the secret. And somewhere out there, Sarah Bennett knew the truth. The only question was: Was she running from Travis? Or was she running from Luke? / Chapter 9 / 14

Chapter 10: The Man Who Owned the Secret

Chapter 10: The Man Who Owned the Secret

The sound of the gunshot disappeared into the darkness.

For a few seconds, Luke heard nothing.

No voices.

No footsteps.

Only the sound of his own heartbeat.

Daniel’s hand remained firmly on his shoulder.

“Stay down.”

Luke’s breathing was heavy.

“Who is shooting at us?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

And that terrified him more than the bullet itself.

Another shot exploded through the warehouse.

A metal container behind them shattered.

Luke flinched.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Move.”

They crawled behind a stack of old equipment.

The warehouse had become a battlefield.

Twenty years of secrets had finally caught up with them.

Luke looked at his brother in the darkness.

Despite everything happening around them, one thought kept returning.

Daniel was real.

The boy from his forgotten memories.

The brother his father erased.

The person who somehow survived all these years.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“Tell me the truth.”

Daniel glanced at him.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

Another gunshot interrupted them.

But Luke continued.

“I’m tired of pieces.”

“I’m tired of everyone giving me half the story.”

His voice became quieter.

“I deserve to know.”

Daniel stared at him.

Then slowly nodded.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“You deserve the truth.”

Daniel took a breath.

“When I discovered the original documents, I thought I found proof that Dad and Thomas destroyed our family.”

Luke listened carefully.

“But I was wrong.”

“What did you find?”

Daniel looked toward the darkness.

“I found proof that someone manipulated both of them.”

Luke remembered the recording.

The old documents.

The hidden company.

“Who?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Our grandfather.”

Luke shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice became firm.

“That’s exactly what he wanted everyone to believe.”

Years ago, before Richard and Thomas became enemies, there was another Bennett.

Edward Bennett.

The founder of the family empire.

A brilliant businessman.

A man respected by the world.

But behind the public image was something darker.

Edward believed power was everything.

He believed family was not about love.

It was about inheritance.

Control.

Legacy.

When his sons grew older, Edward began testing them.

He wanted to know which one was strong enough to continue his empire.

Richard believed business required loyalty.

Thomas believed business required victory.

Edward encouraged their rivalry.

He created competition.

He created jealousy.

And eventually…

He created enemies.

“He made Dad and Thomas hate each other.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because divided people are easier to control.”

Luke felt sick.

His entire family history had been a carefully designed trap.

Daniel continued.

“Edward created fake evidence.”

“Fake accounts.”

“Fake betrayals.”

“He convinced each brother the other was destroying the family.”

Luke looked down.

“And they believed him.”

“They did.”

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“Because they trusted their father.”

Another shot.

Closer.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

“We need to leave.”

Luke nodded.

But before they moved, a voice echoed through the warehouse.

A calm voice.

An old voice.

“You always were difficult to find, Daniel.”

Everything stopped.

Daniel froze.

Luke looked at him.

“You know him.”

Daniel’s face became pale.

“Yes.”

The figure stepped slowly from the shadows.

An elderly man.

Gray hair.

A perfectly tailored suit.

He looked weak.

But his eyes were sharp.

Cold.

The kind of eyes that had watched people for decades.

Daniel whispered:

“Edward.”

Luke stared.

Their grandfather.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who supposedly disappeared from history.

Was standing in front of them.

Alive.

Edward Bennett smiled.

“Luke.”

Hearing his name from this stranger felt wrong.

“You have your father’s eyes.”

Luke stood slowly.

“You’re dead.”

Edward smiled.

“That is what makes secrets useful.”

Luke’s anger grew.

“You destroyed my family.”

Edward tilted his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You manipulated everyone.”

Edward looked at him.

“I gave everyone choices.”

“You ruined our lives.”

“No.”

Edward smiled.

“I revealed who people truly were.”

Luke stared at the old man.

“You made my father believe my mother abandoned him.”

Edward didn’t deny it.

“Younger people are easy to influence.”

“You separated my family.”

“Yes.”

The casual answer shocked Luke.

No regret.

No guilt.

Just honesty.

Officer Mason suddenly entered the warehouse.

“Police!”

Everyone turned.

Edward looked annoyed.

Not afraid.

That disturbed Luke.

A man facing armed police should be nervous.

But Edward looked like someone who had already planned every possible outcome.

Mason pointed his weapon.

“Edward Bennett. You’re coming with us.”

Edward smiled.

“You still think this is about arresting people?”

Mason frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Edward looked at Luke.

“It means you still don’t understand what you’re protecting.”

Luke stepped forward.

“What did Noah inherit?”

For the first time…

Edward’s expression changed.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But Luke noticed.

Fear.

Not much.

Just a little.

But Edward Bennett was afraid.

“Where is the boy?”

Luke immediately became cold.

“You stay away from my son.”

Edward ignored him.

“The child has something I need.”

Daniel moved closer.

“You’ll never get it.”

Edward looked at him.

“You always were sentimental.”

Then Edward looked back at Luke.

“Your son is the final piece.”

Luke’s heart dropped.

“What piece?”

Edward smiled.

“The key.”

Mason moved closer.

“What key?”

Edward laughed quietly.

“You think the company was built on money?”

He looked at Luke.

“You think people fought for documents?”

“No.”

His eyes became darker.

“They fought for access.”

Luke frowned.

“Access to what?”

Edward looked toward him.

“To the original Bennett technology.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s gone.”

Edward smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“It was never gone.”

Luke felt a chill.

“Where is it?”

Edward looked directly at him.

Then said:

“Inside your family.”

The warehouse became silent.

Luke felt confused.

“What are you talking about?”

Edward looked toward the city lights outside.

“Your grandfather created something that could change the world.”

Daniel interrupted.

“But it was destroyed.”

Edward smiled.

“That was the lie.”

Luke looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked equally confused.

Edward continued.

“The technology was never stored in a computer.”

“Never stored in a building.”

“Never stored in a vault.”

Luke’s face tightened.

“Then where?”

Edward looked at him.

“In your bloodline.”

Nobody spoke.

Edward continued.

“Richard hid the final encryption inside the family.”

Luke shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Edward smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“That’s why everyone wanted your son.”

Luke’s body went cold.

Noah.

Everything returned to Noah.

The attack.

The house.

The secrets.

The fear.

Someone wasn’t trying to destroy his family.

Someone was searching for something.

Something inside his child.

Luke’s phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked.

Sarah.

Luke answered immediately.

Her voice was panicked.

“Luke!”

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then Sarah screamed:

“They took Noah!”

The call ended.

Luke froze.

The entire world disappeared.

Edward watched him silently.

Then whispered:

“Now you understand.”

Luke looked at him.

Pure rage filled his eyes.

“What did you do?”

Edward smiled.

“I didn’t take your son.”

A pause.

“Someone else did.”

Luke stepped forward.

“Who?”

Edward looked toward Daniel.

Then answered:

“The person you trusted the most.”

Luke’s blood ran cold.

Because there was only one person Edward could mean.

Someone who had been beside him for seven years.

Someone who knew everything.

Someone who had access to Noah.

May you like

Emily Carter.

To be continued…
