Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Smile The Bennett house had always been known as a place of warmth. At least, that was what everyone believed. Neighbors saw the perfect family. A successful father. A loving mother. A cheerful little boy. The kind of family people looked at and thought: They have everything. But behind the expensive walls and carefully arranged photographs, something had been growing in the darkness. Something nobody noticed. Except Noah. Luke finally pulled into the driveway. He didn’t even turn off the engine. The moment the car stopped, he jumped out and ran toward the front door. The sight waiting for him made him freeze. The house he had spent years building was almost unrecognizable. Broken glass covered the floor. Family pictures hung crooked on the walls. The expensive furniture Sarah had carefully chosen was damaged. But Luke barely noticed any of it. His eyes searched desperately. “Noah!” A small figure appeared from the hallway. “Daddy!” Luke dropped to his knees. Noah ran into his arms. The moment he felt his son’s small hands wrap around him, Luke finally allowed himself to breathe. He held Noah tightly. Too tightly. “I’m sorry,” Luke whispered. Noah pulled back. “Sorry for what?” Luke looked at his son. For a moment, he couldn’t answer. Because how could he explain to a four-year-old that he had spent years believing he could protect everyone? How could he explain that sometimes danger didn’t come from strangers? Sometimes it came from people sitting at your dinner table. “I should have been there.” Noah shook his head. “You came.” Those two words almost destroyed Luke. Because Noah wasn’t angry. He wasn’t blaming him. The child who had been terrified only minutes earlier was comforting his father. Luke wiped his eyes quickly and stood. Then he looked at Aaron Mason. The officer’s expression told him everything. Something was very wrong. “Where’s Sarah?” Mason didn’t answer immediately. Luke’s heart tightened. “Where is my wife?” “We’re still searching.” Luke stared at him. “What does that mean?” Mason looked toward the hallway. “It means we don’t know if she left willingly.” The words landed heavily. Luke looked at Travis. For the first time, he truly saw him. Not as his friend. Not as the man who had attended family dinners. Not as the person who had helped him start his company years ago. But as a stranger wearing a familiar face. “What happened?” Luke asked. Travis sat on the edge of a broken chair. His expression had changed completely. The confidence was gone. The arrogance was gone. Now he looked exhausted. “I was trying to stop her.” Luke stared. “Stop who?” Travis looked directly at him. “Sarah.” The room became silent. Even Noah looked confused. Luke slowly stepped forward. “Don’t say my wife’s name like that.” Travis shook his head. “You don’t understand.” “No.” Luke’s voice became colder. “You’re right.” He pointed toward the destroyed house. “I don’t understand why my son was hiding in a closet while you were trying to break down the door.” Travis looked away. “I wasn’t trying to hurt him.” “Then what were you doing?” Travis said nothing. Mason stepped in. “Maybe we should let him explain.” Luke looked at the officer. “You believe him?” “No.” Mason answered honestly. “But I believe there is more happening here.” Luke glanced at him. “What did you find?” Mason walked toward Luke’s office. “Come with me.” The office door was half open. Luke stopped outside. This room was his sanctuary. The place where he made decisions. The place where he built his company from nothing. But now it felt different. Almost like someone had invaded his mind. Mason pointed toward the desk. “The bag was hidden behind the bookshelf.” Luke walked closer. A black leather bag sat on the table. He stared at it. “I’ve never seen that before.” Mason nodded. “We believe Noah saw Travis putting it there.” Luke looked through the glass wall toward the living room. “Noah doesn’t lie.” “I know.” Mason opened the bag. The first thing inside was a folder. Luke recognized the logo immediately. His company. His eyes narrowed. “What is that?” Mason handed him the folder. Luke opened it. The first page contained financial reports. The second page contained employee information. The third page made his hands stop moving. Bank transfers. Private accounts. Money disappearing from his company. Luke’s face changed. “No…” Mason watched him carefully. “You know what this means?” Luke slowly looked up. “Yes.” His voice was barely audible. “These are internal documents.” “Meaning?” “Only three people had access.” Mason waited. Luke looked down. “Myself.” A pause. “Sarah.” Another pause. “And Travis.” The name felt poisonous now. Ten years earlier. Luke and Travis had been completely different people. Luke was the dreamer. The one who believed hard work could create anything. Travis was the strategist. The person who knew how to turn ideas into profit. Together, they created Bennett Technologies. A company that started in a small apartment and eventually became worth millions. Everyone called them brothers. Not by blood. By choice. But success changed things. Slowly. Quietly. At first, Luke didn’t notice. Travis began making decisions without asking. Hiring people without approval. Moving money between accounts. Luke assumed it was normal. Growing companies were complicated. Trust was necessary. And trust became the weapon. Back in the office, Luke turned another page. His expression became darker. “These transactions…” He looked at Mason. “They started three years ago.” Mason nodded. “Exactly.” Luke’s eyes widened. Three years. That was when everything changed. That was when Sarah became distant. That was when Travis started spending more time around their family. That was when Luke began working longer hours. Trying to save a marriage he thought was simply struggling. But what if the problem was never the marriage? What if someone had been controlling the situation from the beginning? A noise suddenly came from the hallway. Everyone turned. Noah stood there. Holding something in his small hand. “Daddy…” Luke immediately walked toward him. “What is it?” Noah opened his hand. A tiny flash drive rested in his palm. Luke stared. “Where did you get that?” Noah looked toward Travis. “He dropped it.” Travis’s face went pale. Mason immediately noticed. “Travis?” The man didn’t answer. Luke picked up the flash drive. “What’s inside?” Nobody spoke. But everyone already knew. Whatever was on that device was the reason someone had destroyed the house. The reason Noah had hidden. The reason Sarah disappeared. Mason reached for his phone. “We need to check this carefully.” Luke looked at the tiny piece of plastic sitting in his hand. A device smaller than a coin. Yet it had the power to destroy everything. Then Noah quietly said: “Daddy…” Luke looked down. “What, buddy?” Noah swallowed. “Before Travis broke things…” A pause. “He said he was sorry.” Luke frowned. “Sorry for what?” Noah looked toward the empty hallway. Then whispered: “He said…” “He said he should have done it three years ago.” Nobody moved. Because those words changed everything. Three years ago. The beginning of the betrayal. The beginning of the secret. And somewhere out there, Sarah Bennett knew the truth. The only question was: Was she running from Travis? Or was she running from Luke? / Chapter 6 / 14

Chapter 7: The Recording From the Dead

Chapter 7: The Recording From the Dead

The room was completely silent.

Luke Bennett stood in front of his computer screen, unable to move.

The image staring back at him was impossible.

His father.

Richard Bennett.

A man who had been buried eight years ago.

A man whose funeral Luke attended.

A man whose last breath Luke watched.

Yet there he was.

Alive.

Speaking.

Waiting.

Beside him stood a woman Luke had only known from an old photograph.

His mother.

Evelyn.

Luke’s hands trembled.

“No…”

The word escaped his mouth without meaning.

Behind him, footsteps approached.

Sarah entered the office.

“What happened?”

Luke didn’t answer.

She looked at the screen.

And immediately stopped.

Her face lost all color.

“Where did you find this?”

Luke slowly turned.

“You knew.”

Sarah looked away.

“You knew there was a recording.”

“I knew Richard had prepared something.”

“You knew?”

Luke’s voice became sharper.

“How many things have you hidden from me?”

The question hurt.

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Luke pointed at the screen.

“My father.”

“My wife.”

“My friends.”

“Everyone protects me by lying to me.”

Sarah had no answer.

Because he was right.

The truth had become a locked room.

And everyone around him seemed to have a key except him.

The video continued.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

His expression was serious.

“Luke, if you are watching this, then the situation has become dangerous.”

Young Richard paused.

“Before you continue, I need you to understand something.”

He glanced at Evelyn.

“This recording was made twelve years ago.”

Luke froze.

Twelve years.

That meant his father created this before he died.

Before the company became what it was.

Before Travis became his partner.

Before everything collapsed.

Richard continued.

“Your mother did not abandon you.”

Luke felt his chest tighten.

For twenty years, he had carried that belief.

A child’s wound that never healed.

His mother left.

His father stayed.

That was the story.

But now…

The story was changing.

“She disappeared because we discovered something.”

Evelyn looked at the camera.

Her eyes were filled with sadness.

“We discovered that someone inside our family was stealing from us.”

Luke stared.

Someone inside their family.

Richard continued.

“The Bennett family fortune was never created the way people believe.”

A pause.

“It was built from an invention that was taken from someone else.”

Luke frowned.

“What?”

Sarah stepped closer.

The video continued.

“My father created a technology that changed the industry.”

Richard looked down.

“But before he could release it, someone stole his work.”

Evelyn spoke.

“That person became powerful because of what belonged to our family.”

Luke felt confused.

“What does this have to do with me?”

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

“Because Luke…”

He looked directly into the camera.

“You inherited the stolen secret.”

The video paused.

Luke stared.

Inherited?

What secret?

He had spent his entire life believing his father was just a businessman.

A strict but ordinary man.

Not someone connected to a decades-old conspiracy.

Mason entered the office.

“What happened?”

Luke pointed toward the screen.

“Watch.”

Mason looked.

His expression slowly changed.

“Is that…”

“My father.”

Mason watched the frozen image.

“That’s impossible.”

Luke gave a bitter smile.

“Welcome to my life tonight.”

They continued watching.

Richard resumed.

“The reason your mother disappeared was because she wanted to expose the truth.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I believed telling the world would fix everything.”

Richard shook his head.

“But the people involved were already too powerful.”

“They controlled businesses.”

“Lawyers.”

“Officials.”

“Media.”

Luke felt a chill.

This was bigger than Travis.

Bigger than Emily.

Maybe bigger than Bennett Technologies itself.

Richard continued.

“We realized the only way to protect Luke was to erase his connection to the past.”

Evelyn looked heartbroken.

“I hated leaving him.”

Luke stared at the screen.

His mother’s voice.

A voice he never remembered.

A voice he had spent years wishing to hear.

“I watched him grow from a distance.”

A tear fell down Evelyn’s face in the recording.

“Every birthday.”

“Every achievement.”

“Every moment.”

Luke looked away.

His emotions became too heavy.

The woman he thought abandoned him…

Had been watching him.

Loving him.

From far away.

The video suddenly changed.

A younger Richard placed a document on the table.

“This is the original ownership record.”

Luke leaned closer.

The document showed several names.

Including Richard.

And another name.

Luke froze.

Because he recognized it.

The second name belonged to someone he knew.

Someone alive.

Someone involved in his life.

Mason noticed.

“What is it?”

Luke whispered:

“Travis’s father.”

Sarah looked shocked.

“What?”

Luke pointed.

“Thomas Bennett.”

Mason frowned.

“Bennett?”

Luke nodded slowly.

“Travis wasn’t just my friend.”

A terrible realization appeared.

“He was family.”

The history unfolded.

Thomas Bennett and Richard Bennett were brothers.

Half-brothers.

They built a business empire together.

But after the stolen invention, everything changed.

Thomas believed Richard betrayed him.

Richard believed Thomas tried to destroy the family.

The two brothers separated.

Their children grew up on opposite sides of a war they never understood.

Luke and Travis.

Two boys who became friends.

Not knowing their fathers had been enemies.

Sarah whispered:

“Travis didn’t choose revenge.”

Luke looked at her.

“What?”

“He inherited it.”

Suddenly, the office lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

Mason immediately looked toward the hallway.

“Stay here.”

He drew his weapon.

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone wasn’t trying to hide.

Mason moved toward the stairs.

“Police! Identify yourself!”

No answer.

Luke followed.

“No.”

Mason turned.

“Luke, stay back.”

But Luke stopped.

Because he saw something on the floor.

A photograph.

Old.

Wet from the rain.

He picked it up.

His heart stopped.

It was a picture of three people.

Richard.

Evelyn.

And a young child.

Not Luke.

Another child.

Written on the back were four words:

"The first Bennett son."

Luke looked up.

Confused.

“My father only had me.”

Sarah looked at the photograph.

Then her face changed.

“No…”

Luke turned.

“What?”

Sarah stepped backward.

“Luke…”

Her voice trembled.

“You weren’t the only child.”

The house went silent.

A sound came from behind them.

A voice.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

“I’ve been waiting twenty years to tell you that.”

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway was an elderly woman.

She held no weapon.

She looked terrified.

And Luke knew her face.

Because he had seen it moments ago.

On the computer screen.

His mother.

Evelyn.

Alive.

Luke couldn’t speak.

But then she said the words that shattered the last piece of his childhood:

“Luke…”

A tear rolled down her face.

May you like

“You had a brother.”

To be continued…
