Chapter 4: The Person Nobody Suspected

Chapter 4: The Person Nobody Suspected
Rain poured against the windows of the Bennett house.
The storm outside was nothing compared to the one that had just entered the room.
Sarah Bennett stood in the doorway, trembling.
Alive.
But changed.
The woman Luke had spent ten years loving looked like someone who had survived a war.
Her hair was messy.
Her clothes were torn.
A bruise marked the side of her face.
And in her hand was a gun.
Not pointed at anyone.
But close enough to make everyone uncomfortable.
Officer Aaron Mason kept his weapon raised.
“Sarah, I need you to slowly put the gun down.”
Sarah looked at him.
For a moment, Luke saw something in her eyes.
Not anger.
Not aggression.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
Mason didn’t lower his weapon.
“Then prove it.”
Sarah looked down at the gun.
Slowly, she placed it on the floor.
The sound echoed through the room.
Noah immediately ran toward her.
“Mommy!”
Sarah dropped to her knees.
She wrapped her arms around her son.
And for the first time that night…
The strong woman disappeared.
She became only a mother.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Noah buried his face against her.
“I thought you were gone.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Luke watched them.
A thousand emotions collided inside him.
Relief.
Confusion.
Anger.
Fear.
His wife was alive.
His son was safe.
But nothing felt normal anymore.
Because Sarah’s last words kept repeating in his mind.
The person who helped Travis.
Someone you trust even more.
Luke finally spoke.
“Who?”
Sarah looked up.
“What?”
“Who helped Travis?”
Her expression changed.
Like she had been waiting for that question.
But still hoped she would never have to answer it.
“I don’t know.”
Luke stared at her.
“You don’t know?”
Sarah slowly stood.
“I know who started it.”
A pause.
“But I don’t know who finished it.”
Mason stepped closer.
“Sarah, you need to tell us everything. From the beginning.”
She looked around the destroyed house.
Then at Luke.
“I should have told you three years ago.”
Luke’s voice became colder.
“Yes.”
Sarah looked down.
“I was scared.”
“Scared of Travis?”
She nodded.
“But not only him.”
Luke’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Sarah took a deep breath.
“It means Travis was never the mastermind.”
Three years earlier.
Sarah remembered the first time she realized something was wrong.
It was late at night.
The house was quiet.
Luke was asleep upstairs.
She had gone into his office to print some documents.
That was when she saw it.
A folder hidden beneath the printer.
At first, she thought it belonged to Luke.
Then she saw her husband’s name written on the cover.
But not as the owner.
As the target.
Inside were pages of information.
Private conversations.
Business records.
Personal details.
Things nobody outside the family should know.
Someone had been collecting information about Luke.
Watching him.
Studying him.
Sarah remembered the terrifying realization.
Someone wasn’t trying to steal Luke’s company.
Someone was preparing to destroy his entire life.
Back in the present, Sarah continued.
“Travis was involved.”
Luke crossed his arms.
“But?”
Sarah looked at him.
“But he wasn’t smart enough to plan everything.”
The words were harsh.
But true.
Travis was clever.
Ambitious.
Dangerous.
But he was emotional.
He wanted power too badly.
Someone else was more patient.
More careful.
Someone who stayed invisible.
Mason looked at Sarah.
“Who?”
Sarah hesitated.
Then she said:
“Someone from inside Bennett Technologies.”
Luke shook his head.
“That doesn’t narrow anything down.”
Sarah looked at him.
“Yes, it does.”
She walked toward the office.
“Because only one person knew everything.”
Luke followed.
“Everything?”
Sarah nodded.
“Your schedules.”
“Your passwords.”
“Your meetings.”
“Your private accounts.”
Luke stopped.
A terrible thought entered his mind.
“No…”
Sarah looked at him.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Mason noticed Luke’s expression.
“Who?”
Luke didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
There was only one person.
The person who had worked beside him every day.
The person who knew his business better than anyone.
The person he trusted with his entire empire.
“My assistant.”
Her name was Emily Carter.
For seven years, Emily had been Luke’s right hand.
She managed his calendar.
Handled sensitive documents.
Arranged meetings.
She was the person Luke called when something needed to be done immediately.
Everyone at Bennett Technologies respected her.
Some even joked that Emily knew Luke’s life better than Luke himself.
And that was exactly why she was dangerous.
Because information was power.
And Emily had access to everything.
“No,” Luke whispered.
Sarah looked at him sadly.
“I wanted to believe I was wrong.”
“Did you confront her?”
Sarah nodded.
“That was my mistake.”
Luke looked at her.
“What happened?”
Sarah’s face became pale.
“She admitted it.”
Nobody spoke.
“She told me she had been helping Travis.”
Mason frowned.
“Why?”
Sarah laughed quietly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“Because she believed Luke destroyed her family.”
Luke froze.
“What?”
Sarah looked at him.
“She said your company was built on something stolen.”
Luke shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Sarah looked away.
“She showed me documents.”
Mason stepped forward.
“What documents?”
Sarah looked toward the black flash drive.
“The same ones Travis was trying to find.”
Luke felt the room spinning.
For years, he believed his company was his greatest achievement.
A symbol of hard work.
A dream created from nothing.
But now everyone was telling him there was something buried beneath it.
Something from the beginning.
Something he didn’t know.
“What is on those documents?”
Sarah looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
Luke frowned.
“You don’t know?”
“Because Emily took them.”
Mason looked toward the front door.
“The person who just left?”
Sarah nodded.
“She was here.”
Everyone froze.
“When?”
Sarah looked at the empty street outside.
“Before I arrived.”
Luke’s face changed.
“Then why did she leave?”
Sarah answered quietly.
“Because she got what she wanted.”
Mason immediately turned toward the laptop.
The flash drive.
The video.
The evidence.
But then he stopped.
Something was wrong.
The folder was empty.
The video file was gone.
Luke stared.
“What?”
Mason checked again.
Nothing.
Every file had disappeared.
Someone had remotely erased it.
Luke slowly looked around the room.
The destruction.
The missing evidence.
The hidden secrets.
Everything connected.
Someone had planned every step.
Then Noah spoke.
A tiny voice.
“Daddy…”
Luke turned.
“What is it?”
Noah pointed toward the hallway.
“There was another person.”
Everyone froze.
Mason crouched down.
“Another person?”
Noah nodded.
“Before Officer came.”
Luke’s heart dropped.
“What did they look like?”
Noah thought carefully.
“They wore a hat.”
“A hat?”
“And they smelled like Daddy’s office.”
The room went silent.
Luke looked at Mason.
“What does that mean?”
Noah hugged himself.
“Because I know that smell.”
Mason asked:
“What smell?”
Noah whispered:
“The coffee.”
Luke felt a chill.
Because only one person always drank that specific coffee in his office.
One person who had been there that night.
One person who knew the security codes.
One person who could erase the files.
Luke slowly said the name.
“Emily.”
But Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
Sarah’s voice trembled.
“It wasn’t Emily.”
Luke stared.
“Then who?”
Sarah looked toward the dark window.
And whispered:
“The person wearing the hat…”
A pause.
“Was your father.”
The room became completely silent.
Luke’s face went pale.
“My father died eight years ago.”
Sarah looked at him.
“I know.”
“Then who was it?”
Sarah swallowed.
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”
Outside, the storm continued.
But inside the Bennett house, a new nightmare had begun.
Because the enemy they were searching for…
May you like
Might have been someone who was never supposed to exist.
To be continued…
